I assume most people are reading the manga, but I'll still space this out for spoilers regardless. Kumi is absolutely terrible for Ippo. After his retirement, all she wants is to make him forget about boxing and live a life spending time with her. Sure, it's understandable, her brother is an active boxer, and she's terrified of something bad happening to not one, but two important people in her life, but on the other hand, she can't control her brother. No one can. But she *can* control the meek and trusting Ippo instead. The way she acted to Shinoda, the way she got Taihei and his friend to spy on Ippo, the way she takes offense at anything that would disrupt the false utopia she's trying to fabricate reeks of an extremely toxic relationship, and has all the markings of an abuser. There are other women interested in Ippo, and I really hope that if any of them grab the bull by the horns, it's Mari Iimura. She respects Ippo, has a contrasting personality that could help him bring out his more mature mindsets more consistently, instead of holding him back with passiveness and indecision like Kumi does, and wants the best for him relative to his own personal choices, whether it's to return to the ring, or to stay absent. tl;dr: Kumi is abusive, and as long as she stays in the picture, Ippo won't ever grow. Mari is best girl.

I agree , Mari is best girl since she's more mature and supportive of Ippo , Nanako ( Itagaki's sister) is also a decent choice although she is younger than him but has the same level of support. I think that the mangaka will have Kumi change her ways and realize that she can't hold Ippo back , or give up and let Mari or Nanako have a shot at it. Though the man himself needs to realize these things , otherwise he'll end up like a sad puppy , not noticing that there are better alternatives.
