So, River Rock/Lake Stone has this very interesting quality where they can sheer perfectly and cleanly in half, and the sheering always happens at the longest point. Essentially always breaks hot dog style, never hamburger, as far as ive seen. I just put some of the same lake stone into a wall shaped as an "N" yesterday, then today had to pull it out with chisels because the client decided he didnt want that anymore, yet pounding on the lakestone/river rock didnt chip the rocks, didnt make them sheer. They kinda just seem to do it spontaneously. Found a lakestone in a concrete ramp for a barn, the face of the stone had sheered off and fell on the ground. Excuse me nerding out over a couple of rocks, but really thats why we're here in the first place. Love the processing and crushing videos, especially the ones tailored to dealing with waste, thanks for the knowledge!

I used to work in a quarry, operating a crushing plant and crushing 'bluemetal' (basalt/ 'bluestone') for road base and surfacing, cement mixes etc, among other things.The system also had a hammer mill and gyro (cone) crushers in it. We screened various grades of rock out. I'd sometimes get really hard boulders, weighing easily a tonne or two , that would just bounce and launch almost entirely out of the jaws sometimes. These were rounded ultra-hard rocks that would ring like a bell when hit with a spall hammer etc. Quite a few times the rock was so tough that it would actually stall the crusher engine which, on the main crusher was a big 6 cylinder Benz engine driving massive flywheels. Many a time I'd have to stop the plant if it wasn't already stalled, and get into the jaws and sling the boulder with chains so we could lift it out with an excavator. Bloody hard some of those &$#@(& things! Hard work! My back was worn out at a young age from that job.This was over 30 years ago. Regards from Australia.

I have some Arizona Granite, Grey/ Green that are pretty tough stuff. Some jaw crushers wear teeth marks into into them before they crush and they get launched out of the jaw. The only thing is, they are usually like a 8x9 rock so it might not fit your crusher . I'll see if I can set-aside a few pieces for you once I find them, they don't always turn up, but when they do you know it.

Hi Jason, Great video! Washington state & Oregon have a lot of petrified wood. This might be a good rock to test if you do this again. A good lapidary with diamond wheels could cut a lot of jewelry stones from the jade pieces. Good Luck with the eBay auctions. Thumbs up! Take Care, Jim

The question is, if it pays off to crush this round river rocks. The consumption on the jaws is extreme. For sure that is a fact by every jaw crusher. It is just not the optimal system for this kind of material.

You make a PTO driven, 3 point hitch version that can run off a small tractor and every farmer and acreage owner is going to be running these things. Walk the fields, crush the rocks, dump on the roads. No more rock piles, save money on damaged farm equipment from rock strikes.

It can definitely be used, in limited proportion, as an aggregate. The upper limit should not exceed 2:1 (40 lbs. of aggregate per 80 lbs. new concrete) for walkways/sidewalks. The maximum for any load bearing application, like driveways or foundations, should not exceed 4:1 (20 lbs. aggregate per 80 lbs. new concrete).

A lot of big projects these days crush old material on site to use as aggregate where appropriate. It's sometimes cheaper to bring in a mini batch plant and mix on site than it is it truck and dispose the spoils.

Is there a Mohs-like scale that can be used to measure "toughness"?
@Convolutedtubules
@Convolutedtubules Жыл бұрын
As far as I know, it is not as simple as hardness testing. It's the relationship between the materials' ductility and brittleness, a tough material is strikes a good balance of ductility and strength, and is able to absorb a lot of energy before it deforms or fractures.

@Peter_S_

Concrete setting is a chemical reaction with the portland cement reintegrating with water so once it's set, it's set. It would take roasting the broken concrete in a kiln. There you could drive off the water and reactivate the cement.
