This was such a fun video to watch, I am genuinely surprised the engine actually cranked over. I doubted it would, but it actually ran and managed to engage the transmission in reverse. I would have dropped in new oil and filter, fresh gas, air/fuel filters, new spark plugs/wires and distributor cap all the simple stuff then would have tried to start it. The fact you didn't clean the carb out or do any of that prior to cranking it over gave me a little bit of anxiety. But man was that impressive, an absolute testament to the reliability and durability of toyotas and the little classic 22r engine.

My first vehicle was an '88 with the 22r. I got it when it was 10 years old. The carbureted models weren't as common by that point but I liked how old school it was.

Awesome! I just picked up a 85 xtra cab black SR5 EFI that is in similar shape. The body is in good shape, and the interior. It even has the SR5 printed seats. I'm in ending stages of finishing my 88 Mcfly project, and hope to get started on this 85 soon 😎

Great trucks, i have an 86 just hit 150k original miles, they will surely out last us. A buddy of mine has an 87 with over 500k miles on the original engine, only had to replace the clutch 2-3 times and radiator aside from general maintenance. Hold onto it bro, they're gonna sky rocket in price in the coming years and be considered retro/vintage mini trucks.

Don’t know how I got here but this is really cool. I have 2 85 sr5 efi extra cabs. One black that I got off a farm that’s a basket case missing lots of stuff looks just like that one. The white one bought off the original owner my friend.it the cats meow. Super nice fully loaded but the only thing is the original sr5 print bucket seats were bad and had to replace it with a bench. I kept the head rest with the print and put them on my split bucket bench. . I pulled a set of buckets just like yours out of a wrecking 84 sr5 yard last year lucky find. Oh yeah also own 89 sr5 loaded runner first gen. Subbing for the build.

It’s got “ back to the future “ written all over it ( or was that a 1985 ? ) . Glad you said Marty McFly , that was the first thing that came to mind from the thumbnail . I once drove a long bed SR5 that someone loaned to me for a day . I was impressed . I tried to talk, the owner into letting me convert it to 4WD if I can get the drivetrain off a stolen one in the woods but that was a big NO . Maybe I was better off , wasn’t a big fan of getting caught stripping a car by the cops 😳 . Was just 19 or 20 then so I needed some guidance .

I hope you didn't PAY for that truck. The way it was treated, someone hated it. It needs a good home, not an abusive one. I think a third party needs to be involved, before anything happens to this abused old girl. Documentation of safe removal, and inspection of the property for other maimed carcasses are a must. Someone should call Toy Patrol, or invent it, and then call them. This is difficult and emotional for me. I had one once, and she always brought me home.

This is very true. This was more of a mental thing for me haha, a great example was I had the period correct cluster in for one show and another I had the 88’s in. Not an eyebrow was raised. It was more just of how close I could get it do the detail. Overall this truck has been a blast and I hope I get to share it with many more people
