Those 22R/22RE will run until the end of time. You literally can not kill those motors. I had one of these trucks. I’ve never owned a more durable truck. Mechanically speaking.

I am the second owner of a 1987 Toyota pickup 4x4 with r22 engine with 142000 original miles. Body is almost rust free. Original interior is in great shape. Just needs some love to get it running right.

That's awesome, the body and interior are the difficult parts to find/repair. The 22r is simple to tune up. I'd love to find a clean truck like that!

If you still have this and it's an 22R. I am noticing on mine, on top of the Carb the air cleaner... on the passenger side of the air-cleaner, next to the latch, there is a plastic nozzle (like 3/4" long) which would allow air to be sucked in the breather or blown out... on that nozzle it looks like a hose should go on that... I haven't found a KZbin video nor a vacuum hose diagram which shows this port...? One video looked like it was capped off, others look like has a hose on it (though the videos aren't panning over enough to tell for certain, if it's even there, or where a hose would run too. Perhaps your truck has that, and you are able to name where it goes? Or maybe it is just supposed to stay open or maybe it is capped? Any clarity would be much appreciated... My '87 4x4 my dad gave to me, but in trying to get myself up to speed, I have noticed that many of the hoses are wrong... But seems to run pretty good, though they need to be corrected and hopefully might run a little better on various levels.... any thoughts? Thanks

I would gladly drive from ND to buy that engine off of you. Those things never die if you even began to care about maintenance with them. My father poked a hole in the upper part of an oil pan on an 82 4wd pickup and still made it home 5 miles. Put a new oil pan on itand we still drive it to this day though it's closer to half a million miles now.

I have an 87 as well. Not nearly as bad with rust, the body has some around the fenders and the rocker panels are toast but the chassis is fine, anyway I put a clutch and a timing chain and brakes on it and fooled with the carb a little....she starts every time and always gets me where I'm going. In fact it runs so well I'd drive it across the country no hesitation. I mean that. It's definitely saving miles on my first gen 4x4 driving 40 mins to and from work 5 days a week. This thing could be a good little $#*! Getter

Certain engines will "run forever." Bc low compression engines. I've had eight 22r's/re's throughout my lifetime...currently run a fully restored, cherry red '87 that I had re-done out of California. Other engines are comparable, if not better. 22r/re is just the most well-known. ie. My daily driver is an '07 Subaru Forester with a boxter engine. This is my 4th, and newest Subaru...and it's 16 years old. I cracked up 2 others before it (btw super safe car), and the '99 I had, that was my own fault...should have done the timing belt when I knew it needed it. My laziness---> blew the engine up on I-95, half way between Florida and NJ.

Your stuck in reverse cause the trans/truck was banged from the front..usually happens when you set a removed trans down to hard on the bell housing and reverse gear slides forward....Just remove the "do not remove" plug on a G trans or the oil filler plug on W's and Ri5if....now slide the gear to the rear....alls good. Can happen when you run into something head on....and heres your duplicity for the day...a 22R to work on after the 80 series coolant hose marathon

22R was the last good engine toyota made. After that they went to the 22RE which was the crappy fuel injected model. I had both. I had the 22R in an 86 Celica and a 22RE in a 91 Tacoma. The truck got a few air leaks in the hoses and it was a pain to track them down. Then it would run rich. could never get it running right. But the celica kept right on going for years. Just more proof fuel injection was a mistake.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage Жыл бұрын
I like the 22R over 22RE because they're more reliability for slightly less power. 22RE's run great one day and then can have an electrical or fuel issue the next day and run awful. when something goes wrong on a 22r, it slowly gets worse over time so you have plenty of time to fix it.
