Huge credit to my buddy Derek from VGG for the title haha. I got this thing running years ago and abandoned it when I moved things to LA.

Watching you guys figure out the carb and the timing adjustment made me think of archeologists finding unknown artifacts from hundreds of years ago. It’s funny that carbs and timing adjustment is how I grew up, and I’m only 47… makes me feel like I’m 100 now watching this 😆

I liked this one, It reminded me of Zoolander; "The files are IN the computer?" The reality is it probably would have started anyway, that old pump is only getting one gulp every two revolutions, just keep on cranking. Its got 15 feet of fuel line and two big bowls to fill before it'll do anything. I'm also old enough to remember some fuel pumps had a manual lever just for priming for this exact situation. We've come a long way in a short time.

I had a 1977 Ford LTD which was basically the same size as this thing and, I think, pretty much the same motor too. Bought it for $75 in 1993. The previous owner had haphazardly ripped out half of the vacuum lines and cut out the cats so the thing was loud AF and barely ran. He'd also painted over the vinyl 'Landau' top with house paint. It had an in-dash 8-track player. It wouldn't start hot unless you adjusted the timing at the distributor. It wouldn't run in the rain. The headlight switch had vacuum lines run to it to open the headlight doors and it would freeze in the winter; you'd have to idle the car long enough to warm up the interior and thaw it out in order to have headlights. The entire pep band drum section's instruments fit in the trunk and back seat. I think it got about 12MPG, but at least gas was only like a dollar a gallon. The 3-speed auto was in 3rd at something like 15mph. I do not miss that car one bit.

Can be as reliable as any modern car with just a choke hooked up. Modern fuel will boil in the carb. So hot restarts can take a second....but I drove a 78 dodge 4x4 almost daily for 2 years. Even when it was 10° or 90°. Or my 76 Chevy step side. 454 Big block,( built with flat tops and a cam on the 90s). 4 speed. 15 mpg. As long as I wasn't driving like an ass....... It was awesome.

Good lord I feel old... This was every Saturday afternoon growing up, working on somebody's old shitbox. FYI (if anyone cares) the small rectangular openings in the top of the carb are bowl vents. You can fill the bowls through them using a small funnel (or beer can). That will usually provide enough fuel to get the pump primed and working. This video is truly a "grandma's car" primer for millenials.....

Need more content on the Lincoln! You see people working on Chevys, Caddy's and all the other cars but rarely see someone working on a Lincoln, not to mention an old Continental like this. I would love to see you go through the whole thing mechanically and clean it all up, maybe do some mods like lower it with some nice wheels and then cruise with it. :D Those 462s are such smooth engines when they run properly. I'm stoked for more of this beauty!

I feel this needs a resto mod done.. Rebuild the motor and do kinda show car style. For suspension, do air bags or air ride and drop it on 20inch rims. Then do some custom interior or original revamped and modernized. Would be sick build to bring back to Michigan and do woodward cruise again.

I cant find any comments saying this but the clacking sound is the engine dieseling, something is glowing in the combustion chamber causing the fuel to pre-ignite, can be caused by many things but usually carbon build up coupled with running lean. Very common for carbs to have idle fuel shut off valves to avoid this happening, however it seemed your one was doing it at low throttle which is probably a different issue.

I know a lot of people are hankering for a rotary swap, I am too, but here's my controversial opinion: Keep it naturally aspirated and tuned for the low end, just with a lot of rotors, and restore the interior. So it's driveable and luxurious, and doing the whole american "no replacement for displacement", but still Dahm-ified.

Those venturies cause a vacuum, which brings up the fuel from the float bowls. Between the discharge nozzle and those bowls, that's where the main jets are located. With a four venturi carburetor, there are two main jet. As you are able to imagine, for the 462 cid engine, those jets are quite large. What's cid? Cubic Inch Displacement.
