That's how the thieves work. They know there's probably a tracker in there so they drop it off somewhere to cool off. The people living there were most likely completely innocent to the theft.

Tbf it's not the worst idea to drop it off at some random place (in case the people on the property weren't involved). Creates a diversion/extra work for law enforcement to rule those people out. Rob, if this ever happens again. Remember you can park a street away and fly your drone over from the safety of your car. You look around the property beyond what you can see from the lot line. Not two, not three, 4 of them. Placed in random locations almost as if chosen by lottery. The moment you think about "where to put the air tag" that's the moment you've given the thief an advantage. Best method with the AirTags is to keep multiple, at least two of them in the trailer, or whatever you’re tracking. That way they may find the first one, get rid of it, think they are okay and there’s still an AirTag or more in there.
@masondegaulle5731
@masondegaulle5731 Жыл бұрын
Very likely Rob did this, but he's not likely to advertise that fact. Plenty of dealerships lowjack their stock, _and_ place an airtag in the center-console. Thieves toss the airtag and don't bother looking for the GPS.

this is what i have for my bikes. Ive got an airtag on all of them, in a relatively good spot where people will only look there if they are looking for trackers. Then ive got another tracker thats sort of a mission to get to and 99% of people will never look here. Its not visible and you would have to take a lot apart to find it unless you know its there. theres no way to see it even. This is the best way and has helped me recover multiple bikes. also each bike has its 2nd tracker in a different spot so if multiple are stolen, they should only find the airtags, but if they find one of the other trackers, the other bikes wont have them on the same spot

So a breakdown of how thieves opperate. They spend time scouting for targets like your trailer as an example. They move the trailer to a different location that's not associated with them. Then if the trailer get picked up right away or the next morning and brought back to where they took it from they know it probably has a tracker in it. This way they either have to steal it and remove tracker or leave it alone or risk being caught next time. Also Rob good thing to activate if a feature for airtags is that if they move locations they should ping you right away. that way when trailer was moved you could of been notified and maybe caught the thieves.

Had my trailer stolen earlier this year, so I feel your pain. Had a gps tracker notify me when it left the boundary that I set up. Called the cops and they fortunately found it within 2 hours. Thieves are the scum of the earth. Lessons learned, no amount of security is enough and insurance is worth it.

Did you try to go locate it yourself? Were the bad guys able to empty it before it was found? I use a GPS tracker on mine too, I get notifications the minute it moves, but if the police don't want to help right away then there's a difficult decision to be made and I'm not sure what I would decide.

One thing you could do, is you could put a solar panel on the roof and a battery pack inside the trailer with a speaker hidden somewhere and put a sensor on the doors that will trip a loud siren to play when the scumbags open it or even if they try to move it. Then have a GPS tracker mounted somewhere hidden that sends you an alarm on your phone? Or go extra old school and pull the wheels off the trailer and set it on jackstands when storing it and lock the wheels up in the shop? Also pull anything of value out of the trailer like wheels and tires and spare parts for the racecar out of the trailer when storing it.

My 2c: These guys were smart and knew the trailer was too hot. They took stuff that can be resold without issues (Fire extinguisher, fluids, ramps... you can't track those on the used market really.) They didn't see the airtag, they just knew the trailer was hot, possibly wanted to come back to it in a week to move it away because at that point they'd know it wasn't GPS tracked. Here in Italy they do that with motorcycles: to see if they have GPS tracking after they steal them they park them in the area, just a few km's away hidden enough to not be found by someone accidentally recognizing the plate. Then if nobody comes to pick it up in a week, they proceed to steal it and part it out.

Switch to a two key system. First one turns on/off an alarm system like a car alarm and also locks electric brakes. Second is the door lock wired to the alarm system. I had to do this with my work tool trailer. Simple solar panel on the roof to dual 12v batteries inside with an inverter and I have all the power to run lights, charge tool batteries, air and run the alarm. And I went with a car alarm system for the battery backup, door triggers and shock sensor. Works well and has saved my tools more than once.

Most likely the household had nothing to do with it. With the proliferation of tracking devices thieves have adapted their methods. Now they either drop the stolen item off on a property completely unrelated to strip it right away or they just leave it there for a couple days to see if it gets picked back up. Leaving stolen property on property that can be connected to you is so dumb even the vast majority of thieves can see that.

@ToolofSociety so when a trailer ends up in your back yard, you keep it? Lol. You're talking about a parking lot or a side street. The trailer was in the dudes yard....
@ToolofSociety
@ToolofSociety Жыл бұрын
@@svenjorgensenn8418 You really should work on the whole jumping to conclusions thing. Maybe instead you should consider asking some questions before jumping on that high horse of yours? When a vehicle is parked in your neighborhood do you call the cops? Do you knock on everyone's door to ensure it belongs to them? Do you get into the car to see who the owner is? As for the trailer's location you can clearly see it's on the side of a dirt road/alley on the OUTSIDE of the fenced in back yards(2:32). A good +10 feet from the fence. I'm about 90% sure that's a public/utility easement based on the dirt road and the fences seen. You can also see further down the road another trailer and junk including a rusted car through the back window of the truck as he's backing up to the trailer. So don't pretend it was in someone's front yard or even back yard. Looks like a dirt easement that has trash dumped on it illegally but obviously I could be wrong. No doubting the trash and rusted cars present though.

In case you can't find a storage area, you can engrave something special in a place no one knows so if they remove the airtag you have a backup for that. And wheel clamps on all the wheels with the hitchlock will make it even more of a pain in the ass to steal. But all this is still not a bulletproof way of securing a trailer.

A guy I used to work with cut the tongue off of his race car trailer and sleeved it, attached it with pins, similar to a swing tongue on a boat trailer. It was a lot of work, but it was also very unlikely to be stolen because good luck towing the damn thing when the tongue is missing and you can't just pick up a standard piece and bolt it on to tow it away. I haven't done that because I keep my trailer on my own property and it has a loud alarm that will sound if you try to move it, but I'm very lucky to have property I can store a trailer on, many don't.

Someone wrote in another comment up above, that the thieves leave the trailer at somewhere not related to them but maybe some blocks away from one of them. They want to see if the trailer is picked up within a few days - if its not getting picked up there is mostlikly not a tracker on it. Unless the people where it was placed had it hooked up to their car you can't prove they had anything to do with it. If I put my wallet in your bag, and accused you of stealing it, how you that make you look? (sad world I know).

And to the paranoia crowd, its quite easy for apple to have a monitoring service where you can pay a fee for active monitoring, and if air tags not attached to your account is following you, a live person is notified to check on it and determine if it’s a safety risk to you.
