we are in the process of fixing up a 1965 vw karman ghia that has no engine. lets dig one out of our stash and see if we can bring it back to life. these were sitting in a damp basement for 30 years with an unknown condition, one of them will make it back into this low dollar driver, THIS IS NOT A RESTORATION, just having fun on the cheap. relax, grab a snack and enjoy wrenching in the garage with me.

It was almost evil manic laughter after all the flames! (I made the same noise when I got my newly acquired 37 year old motorbike to fire up the first time, carbs were completely bunged up, but a mixture of excessive choke and a squirt of fuel does wonders).

I burned up a starter cranking an engine for a solid minute or more, the engine would stall if the RPM dropped below 1,000, it had a huge vacuum leak (hole in the block I didn't know about), and I figured I'd be replacing it anyway, I was only 3 miles from home so I just kept at it. Love your videos!

Nice work Mustie. It has been around 25 years since I did some real wrenching on cars and I got a bit out of practice. Since watching your videos I decided to do some work on my sister's 1960's classic Ford. It hadn't been on the road for at least 12 years and was sitting in her damp basement under cover. A mechanic and a family and two family members had both tried and failed to get it running properly. I fitted a new carb kit, battery, points, a coil and added new non ethanol fuel and a fuel filter. I freed up the engine and added new oil and filter. Also replaced the thermostat and thermostat housing. Hearing it start after all those years was an amazing feeling. It still needs brake and wiring work as well as a new water pump so those are next on the list. Last week it took a while to start as she is letting it sit again and I gave it a bit of a mixture adjustment. Now it starts first pop even after sitting for a week. Having a major disability, chronic pain and some corresponding major depressive and suicidal episodes over the years, it has been a bit of a struggle to get motivated at times but thanks for giving me the inspiration and refresher course/education to actually start and achieve something.

Good? I am a good mechanic. I'd say mustie1 is easily an excellent mechanic. The only thing different I would probably do, due to electronics training, is buy a rebuild kit for the alternator/starter and do it myself to save a few bucks. He's probably got extras around so he probably won't see any point in doing that. Myself, I know solid electrics in a car that is in a snow & winter belt makes a huge difference in reliability.

I don't think I've ever seen a 1500cc VW engine you could describe as fire-breathing before, but the Mustie human fuel injection system made it! Very good point about spinning an engine plug-less before attempting to fire it. Gives everything a chance to settle a bit, and the oil to reach all the parts before you expose it to a high load like explosions in cylinders. BTW, a quick note about the quick lash-up wiring to make it run, I know you'll know this, but for those that asked how to do it, don't leave the coil connected to +ve for too long when it's not turning. If the points are closed you'll be running a current through the coil continually and you could cook it.

kennycybertron1 In Germany after the war, the Germans were not the greatest drivers to say the least. They didn’t pay a lot of attention to brake or signal lights. If you were making a turn, they were liable to pass you on either side, causing lots of fender benders. So the started installing a signal light on a bar that mounted inside the post behind the door. When you gave a signal, this bar about 7” long swung out with for or five lights on it that flashed, indicating your intentions. They were nicknamed “idiot sticks”

Or perhaps people who blew their speakers out when the motor finally fired up? I'm not sure how you can dislike any video where you pull an engine out of long term storage and get it to fire up without any major work. That's the kinda stuff that got me to subscribe in the first place.

I have worked on many old snowmobile engines including opposing cylinder engines where there where trees growing through the frame. I always carried a bottle of gas oil mix to dump downbthe cylinders. If the engine turned over, It usually ran. I was eather given them or bought them cheap enough. It was always a thrill getting a 50 year old snowmobile running again. I never had the pleasure of working on a VW engine but close enough for whom it was for.
