Fuel pump under the back seat is the issue here. Wouldn't be surprised if you take the rear bottom seat out and find fuel leaking from the pump housing and spilling onto the fuel tank. VDO/Continental had a bad batch on E9x when these cars were built, the plastic is known for cracking and you lose pressure. FCP has the updated VDO units, they're all good and don't suffer the same fate.

Coming together well! This project reminds me of something my friend did years ago. He bought a 1990-ish Pontiac Sunbird Turbo (yes turbo!). It promptly blew a head gasket after purchase. He then took it upon himself to start to dismantle the engine by himself and just threw all the bolts in a coffee can and car parts across my garage. The car then sat in my garage for a year or to when he sent me his credit card asking me to put it back together. I spent a good part of the day organizing all the engine parts and bolts. Got it back together after the engine was rebuilt and only had a small box of left over bolts.

@DayOffDIY6 ай бұрын
i gotta disagree, ive used 5-30 for YEARS at the shop and in my cars, if your engine tolerances are within spec and its not consuming, theres no reason to run 5-40, however... these N54s sometimes do prefer a 5-40 but its not across all BMW engines. S54, S62, S65, S85 all use 10-60 and id still use 5-30 in an M52, M54, M62, N62 etc

Hey my friend the torque spec on those valve covers is only 8.5 NM or 75 INCH pounds. As well the torque sequence is important. This thing will leak on you big time of you don't do it EXACTLY the way it's needed. There's a ton of info online as well as the torque pattern. Inside to outside. Are you missing the vacuum canisters? They go right in front left side right in front of the coolant tank. and that's where the vacuum lines are supposed to go to first then to the solenoids. I know you know all this by now but I can't help but jump in LOL. Sorry. I guess you know by now anything I could say so I should just shut my gob now. LOL. I LOVE THE VIDEO! Thank you! I thought the INPA said your Low pressure was too low. Meaning a fault from the tank pump and not the HPFP.. Wish I was there to help ya LOL. But you know what to do!

Hey Greg! Yeah i think the plastic covers call for 9nm but 10 will be fine :) i will monitor the gasket but i think itll be okay. I shouldve gone with a different torque sequence but ive had great luck with my VCGs in the past I totally am missing the vacuum canisters! i just ordered them up. Hey. Love your videos. jusy wanted to know if you can help me with a problem on my E46. I replaced my oil filter housing gasket a few months ago with proper torque yet when I drive I still see some leaking occuring from there. I made sure to tighten the bolts as well. I got a viton OFHG that was supposed to be better but do I just go OEM?
@DayOffDIY6 ай бұрын
oem is always best in my opinion. did you replace the vanos oil line? replaced the washers and torqued it to spec? id check those and the oil pressure sensor.
@drixmonti126 ай бұрын
@@DayOffDIY Already did the Vanos line from ECS tuning which has been super solid with no leaks. I'll be getting a budget torque wrench with new hardware just in case as before I changed it I'm pretty sure those are the old bolts just in case it's those.

God watching this video remind me of what a turd and pain in the ass the n54 is to work on. BMW has come so so far now with the b58 and s58 it’s not even comparable. With b58s nearing 10 years old now as well there’s really no reason to put yourself through the tortures of n54 ownership anymore lol… just save up a little and get yourself a b58 car. Even if you have a small car payment it’s still gonna be less than the parts it takes to keep an n54 going and able to keep up with the b58. Awesome series man keep it up. Most underrated KZbinr on the tube!
@DayOffDIY6 ай бұрын
Appreciate it Robert! ya know i really dont have too much experience with the b58s, didnt see too many before i left the shop so id like to get my hands on one someday. You cant turn down a free N54 though! they are better than the N55s in my opinion. I trust them more
@roberthatley74156 ай бұрын
@@DayOffDIY definitely wouldn’t turn down a free one that has good internals still. And I love this series, have all notifications for you turned on :) I agree the rotating assembly on the n54 is more stout, however the n55 ewg (not pwg) cars and the n55 found in the non comp m2 are also very good engines that I wouldn’t discount. They just need more frequent oil changes. I’m still team b58 tho, they’re incredible and the best of both worlds and a joy to work on for the most part.

What’s up man I might pick up a e46 330i 5 speed tomorrow at my local auction.but it was in a front end accident and I’m wondering if the parts are the same for all 3 series as long as they are in the same family. Like if I go to my local junk yard and get a bumper/fender/hood for a 328i will it fit my 330i?
@miltonmartinez66986 ай бұрын
Only has 125k miles engine and gearbox are healthy but the radiator support is pushed in a bit and the coolant reservoir is making contact with the serpentine belt and it cut a gash into it. If it goes for under $1,000 I’ll pick it up 👍🏼 I can just pull the front end to get it back into its original position as much as possible. Bumper is only cracked a little bit no major damage

Hey Alec man... I bought a BMW E90 with the N52B25A engine on it a few weeks ago. It's burning oil like crazy... initially 1 quart every 200 miles or so... I did an oil change on it and put Liqui Moly 5w-40 in. It's a bit better but it's still like 1 quart every 350 miles. CCV seems fine, there's just a little bit of vacuum on the crankcase. I've read the piston rings and oil return holes on this engine are crap... any suggestions? :(
@DayOffDIY6 ай бұрын
dang thats a bummer! first id go after the CCV if its showing signs, they can cause excess oil consumption. If there is a noticable amount of vacuum at the oil cap while idling it could be faulty. i use a manometer to measure vacuum if i need to. next thing id do is use a boroscope and go down the spark plug holes to look at the valves while they are open and closed. If the engine is warm, NOT HOT, you can use a boroscope to see if there is any evidence of the valve seals leaking down into the combustion chamber. you can also inspect the tops of the piston for signs of oil consumption via rings. google piston washing for an example of what the piston looks like when it comes from the bottom. you can also leak down test the engine, or another way to check for valve seals leaking is to let the car idle and get hot for 5-10 minutes, then snap the throttle and rev the engine up quickly to 5-6k and check for a smoke cloud out of the exhaust. hope this helps!
@basesperanca6 ай бұрын
@@DayOffDIY hey again Alec. I bought from a dealer and here in Germany the dealer is obliged to fix issues the car had within the first 6 months. I struck a deal with the dealer to renew vslve stem seals, oil pan gasket, head gasket and piston rings for 600 bucks. He says also we could put in new pistons for additional 400 bucks. Sounds like a good deal to me. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on it and see what happens. I don't have a lot of cash right now but if the engine is coming apart I think I'd rather have it done right the first time.
