I love this 1920's era Witte 3 horsepower hit and miss engine! It is always fun to fire it up but it has been over a year. A fun day gets frustrating when things don't go well! The spark plug wire disincarnates (off camera of coarse) and the engine floods with what is a very weak spark. I cut hours of video from the multiple attempts. We WILL get it figured out on the next one!

I have been to shows where some people have used model T Ford buzz coils and a 6 volt battery to run their engines if it did not have a mag. Or if it just had a hammer spark ignitor they would hook up a battery to that. And old legend out there is that some people would use the batteries from a crank telephone then in use to run their engines. Of course if the batteries ran down by the time the job was done, both the engine and their telephone were out of commission

That's a very creative way to get one started.

Thats amazing that they had a way to charge the magnets power! Just tape some neodinum magnets on there. It will give it one hell of a jump Also guys like you are slowly dissappearing... and it kills me!! We need men like you guys god knows if I could keep something alive alone even if I am good at working on engines

that engine will run 😊😊 U should've cleaned the sparkplug W a wire brush and turn the needle vavle back in 4 the gas and next is 2 clean the points on the magneto U pull that engine over top dead center and pull it over the rest of the way it should run the check may be stuck that's in the gas pick up tube that's in the gas tank if it doesn't pull gas it won't run either 😮😮 that engine does have grease cups U fill them W grease put them back on and turn them down there's 1 also 4 the connecting rod and U still have oil the engine W a oil can the priming cup on the cylinder works just the 1S on the old john deere tractors U aren't use 2 that engine yet 😮😮 turn the cup open it will make easier 2 turn over and after the engine is running U close the cup / I seen a 2 HP engine the same brand that 1 had double piston rings in it I knew the fellow who had it a good friend where ever the engine was from some 1 didn't where 2 get the piston rings from so they went 2 the parts store at that time and them matched up the engine still ran fine it had 6 rings instead of 3 there are places that have parts 4 those engines and there are places that makes piston rings it won't run if there's no gas in the tank 😊😊 OMG 7 12 2O24

These hit and miss engines are fun things. Still being used in India and Pakistan a lot these days. There are different designs of these engines I have seen over the years. But they all have had the water jacked cracked and repaired multiplied times. It's harder to see one that has not had the water jacket repaired at some point. Some very large ones the operator had to constantly oil the rod and journals. So if it was running there was no room for slacking on your job.

So if it’s a hit and miss does that mean for every 2 revolutions the spark plug only fires once? How does the coil know when to hit and when to miss? Does the gas in the carburetor miss the same time the coil does? How did they engineer that so it stays timed? Happy new year Aaron and the cleaner and your Grandpa and all your families 😀🇨🇦

It's pretty much all dictated by the governor. If the speed of the engine drops then it fires. If the flywheels speed is high enough and it has enough inertia it doesn't fire. Happy New Year to you and yours as well! 👍

God I wish America would go back to making these engines honestly just good lasting stuff that I a young guy can give to my grandchildren and the won't have issues with it if they just upkeep on it...

Whats one of these worth? A guy is selling one on Facebook marketplace for 120$ idk if I should pick it up. Now that I see it it might be a little different he said his was for a old washing machine

The old washing machine engineer quite a bit different and very small. Depending on the brand and horsepower the hit and miss engines can be worth anywhere from $1,000 and up if they run.

OMG!!! At one time I had 6 or 7 hit and miss engines. An old mcCormick tractor. And accessories.

I'm surprised how valuable they are these days. We just have this one. When we went to Rollag, Minnesota for the annual show, they had hundreds and hundreds of them operating. There's just something fascinating about them mechanically. It's kind of like watching a campfire it's just very relaxing. I love those old McCormick tractors! Was yours on steel wheels?
