Don't hold me to this, but I'm pretty sure it's a 1949 Model R. They were produced until 1953. Great find, actually and worth restoring. I'd say it was worth "swamping it" to get this one. 👍

Dude, your truck was throwing a wake, I can’t believe you didn’t bury that truck to the axles. I’ll pile on in the don’t scrap it column, I’m positive you will get offers for that thing from Deere collectors- I know one in Texas that used to travel all over the Country to buy his tractors, and he has gotten far worse than that back to showroom quality. Just don’t go cutting the frame on this one. And fire ants will ball together in rafts in a flood they will float for extended time until they find a place to land- it’s kinda scary to see.. and you do not want one of those ant rafts to cling to you.

Very nice 👍 Just one thing, don’t scrap it!! It’s a piece of collection. If the little engine doesn’t work, you can pull start the tractor or you can connect the big engine on a PTO to crank it.

It is a Model R. I have a Model R 1949 ser # 4384. That modle is one of a kind, 50 thru 53 had some maintance improvements, with starting engine and similar issues. Mine runs, purchased in 1962. I still get the thrill of starting it and driving in local parades. Have fun with yours.

Just try and pull start it. If it’s locked up you may as well just give up on it because you’ll have thousands of dollars in it (probably close to 10 to do it right) and you can buy a running one in good shape for 3-4k. Would be worth something to somebody for parts though. If it’s not locked up it’ll probably run.

For some reason I was thinking for a sec it was a caterpillar because I know on those old diesels from the 30s and 20s people are bringing them back from the grave like my 37 grader had 2 and 3 stuck and we were able to order all the parts to rebuild it from my cat dealer but my dads John Deere grader from the 90s he can barely get parts to fix the injection pump. Lol

Glad you didn’t try to start it. Taking it all the way apart and replacing seals and sleeves should be fun. Guessing your going to need machine shop to fix stuff. Rebuilding and machining/rebalancing things is going to take time

I known much about old John Deere tractors but, I remember hearing them called a “Johnny Popper” because of the way they sounded when they ran.

I thought the Johnny popper was a gasoline engine, similar horizontal cylinder design.

Kerry Ware: Sure ‘nuf they were gasoline engines. Never seen a diesel one. Single horizontal cylinder that was cranked by spinning a big ol’ external wheel. When it idles it has a slow pop-pop-pop rhythm. There are folks that collect them things and pay big dollars for um.
