for the batteries connecting the positive side first leaves the system without power until it is grounded power flows from the negative pole to the positive . thanks for the videos. ps the hood clips engine blanket or sound insulation but with the block heater i would venture a guess its spent time where there is serious winter not the florida variety.

Hank....those plates on the inside of the hood butterflies are there to hold soundproofing insulation. I suppose the insulation was there to keep warmth in the engine compartment during the cold weather (in the much colder climates than Florida!). The insulation sheets were fiberglass with a foil like covering on the outside. We had a couple of Autocars of that vintage....one my Dad bought brand new in 1979.

International Fleetstar is a series of heavy-duty trucks that was produced between 1962 and 1977 by International Harvester. Slotted above the Loadstar and below the Paystar and Transtar conventionals introduced after it, the Fleetstar was the first truck line that International designed specifically for vocational use.

Definitely for under-hood insulation. Batteries under seat to keep them from freezing. With the block heater, that truck came from up north. Formula 290 was a combination built by Cummins for fleet operations. It's not the HP. If that was house mover, the beefed frame was for carrying extra "traction weights" as the house was on dollies. So no tongue weight to help.

The numbers mean as much as the letters when it comes to the old IH trucks…the 1600-2000 series were the loadstar and fleetstar, aka medium duty to light heavy trucks, the 2070 being the biggest model (the “7” in the model number denotes HD diesel engine, a 5 would be a light diesel, and gas I can’t recall, maybe a “2”. Anyhow the 4000’s were the Transtar range, which were class 8 road trucks, the 4070 being the cabover and 4270 and 4370 being the hood trucks, short and long respectively. The 5000 was the Paystar , the on/off road heavy vocational truck line with both a 5050 and 5070 available, the only model in the 5000 range back in the IH days although more were added later once IH became Navistar International. The last of the Transtars was the 9000 series, the 9200 and 9400 were aero models and the 9370 replaced the old 4300 series. The 9600,9700 and 9800 were the last of the cabovers.

Y'all made mention of when the circa these trucks ran to. I do believe it was 1987....u may find a couple "named" 88's, that was the last of the metal fenders and butterfly hoods. This is when Volvo got involved and pulled A-car out of Pa and moved them to Utah. However, I do know Western Star used that same cab into the 90's and I believe Volvo/Autocar might have kept it around a couple of years for their vocational trucks but they were pushing hard for that "New Spaceage" look cab for that time.

That suspension is a Rockwell 6 rod suspension, tough but hard to get parts to Re-bush these days. I like Hendrickson better just for simplicity but it’s still a tough setup. I’d bet that truck had a winch on it from day one, the auxiliary transmission behind the 13 speed almost guarantees that’s what it had from new because that’s one of the only reasons to order a truck with a road ranger trans and still have an old auxiliary trans behind it, it gives an extra low hole and overdrive as a bonus but the big reason is to run the mechanical winch forward and backward at variable speeds. And before anybody says “blue button means 8ll or 15 speed, not 13”….that’s true since around 1985 but the OLD original Eaton 13 speed knobs had a blue splitter button and a single Phillips head screw holding the top plate on the knob…that’s what this is. Back in the day when this truck was built the 8LL and 15 still used the old style range selector valve that clamped on the stick with hose clamps and had the deep reduction switch on the dash.
