22:03 The loops in the injector lines are because they all have to be exactly the same length so injection timing doesn't get messed up. Takes a certain amout of time for each fuel pulse to go through the lines from pump and get to injectors. So if one was longer than others it wouldn't be perfectly injected ontime. Those fuel pumps are the real magic boxes when it comes to these things! How those things shoot exactly where & how much to each cylinder with ignition advances and all, throughout the RPM range, under loads is crazy. Also i like the " basically witch craft" comment about what happens inside a turbo when you were describing it. 😂 I love turbos, especially diesel engine turbos! The Magic box & witch craft makes me happy!👍🏻👌🏻🚜🛠️🔩🔧🛢️💥💨

I don't think you can go wrong with Rotella T-6 after the break-in period. It's not like this is a high reving race engine or something. Maybe even the Rotella T-5 semi-synthetic would be fine too. I don't think the full synthetic oil is absolutely necessary in an engine like this.
@dieseJL5 ай бұрын
Yeah lots of guys are saying just run the t4 since it’s a flat tappet engine 🤷🏻♂️
@ekkarzbastlirny57695 ай бұрын
That's right, the exact reason for this is that diesel, like other liquids, is incompressible only in theory, in reality it compresses by up to one percent at the pressure that is normally injected into the cylinder. With pipes of different lengths, this would be enough to cause such a large inaccuracy in the timing that the engine could be started, but it would not rev up - or in the opposite case, it would practically not be possible to start, because it would only achieve regular operation at higher revolutions. The secondary advantage of this method is that as a spare part it is enough to carry only 1 pipe between the injection pump and the injector - in the event of any malfunction, the spare one simply bends and does not need to be shortened.

A well deserved smile again. This was a better one then the tractor last year. The reason why the high pressure diesel lines are bent like that, is to make sure that the length of the line is the same, in a way they have all the same pressure-loss/delay.

You finally got there. The older stuff usually isn't compatible with modern oils and coolants. There are companies that make the fluids with the right additives so as to not damage your engines and transmissions. Here in New Zealand I use Penrite products but I don't know what companies over there offer the right products.

I am jealous, I would love to rebuild an old diesel like that. I have an old Oliver tractor with a Waukesha diesel that is stuck we have dumped all sorts of crap in the cylinders trying to free it up. Haven’t spent too much time on it after that. For painting you can use grease on areas you don’t want painted and it just wipes right off.
@ShainAndrews5 ай бұрын
21:50 Timing loops. Each line needs to be the same length/volume to minimize timing variation between injectors. Now before somebody says you can't compress a liquid... there is a boat load of entrained air. There is a boat load of surface area of the line that deflects for each injection event. Uniformity improves engine performance.
@russwabuda15565 ай бұрын
ty, the bends are in the lines to make them all the same length. unlike electricity, the pulse of the fuel takes a calculated time to arrive at the injectors. if the lines were at different lengths, the timing would be different at each cylinder.
@patrickhile10195 ай бұрын
What kind of crazy brake-in does this need!? My last rebuild was an International DT466 and the break-in procedure for seating the rings, in my opinion was impossible without a dyno. It was something like 75% load and cycle the cooling fan half a dozen times as soon as possible no idioling or messing about. Start it check for leaks and smash on it!

I have watched plenty of your videos thus I offer the following.... Raise the fuel tank above the engine. The engines I have seen you work on do not have lift pumps. They put the tank at or above the level of the high pressure pump and in this case especially you are expecting a pump that PUSHES to SUCK. and that is not the same. In this case you may have started at the bleed screw on the filter and fill it from the top down. I can not stress enough that pulling fluid is not pushing fluid and any air between the pump and injectors stops all flow. cheers. you are great mechanic and raising another one too. Bless you for taking your son to the shop and working with him on an engine NOT sitting in the house watching TV and the net. Keep him away from iphone as long as you can. The net is not on your side when it comes to raising a kid. Go Detroit

If you ever want to stop a diesel run away, get yourself a Co2 fire extinguisher. Very effective, more so than the block of wood as you could have an intake gasket leak which will still suck air and keep it running.
@olegrumpy45195 ай бұрын
Always have a board that you can place over the air intake, that will shut a runaway engine down. that is the quickest way to stop them in that case.
@carloskawasaki6563 ай бұрын

@larrymcgill55084 ай бұрын
I remember from my engine building days half a century ago, aren’t you supposed add the break in oil additive after you run your post rebuild oil clean up? The reason being is that it takes a full cycle under pressure and heat for the chemical components to bond into the metal of the engine. If it is done correctly, it will significantly reduce the component wear and increase engine life.
@thesmallenginekid5 ай бұрын
The high pressure fuel lines on mechanically injected engines are bent so they are all the same length. If they were different lengths the timing would be off.
@dieseJL5 ай бұрын
I see that. But later models are not so I’m not sure what it up 🤷🏻♂️
@jazzerbyte5 ай бұрын
Thanks to Costex - sounds like a solid runner! "Past nap time" - did he sleep through all that noise? One alternate trick I've heard to prevent a runaway is a block of wood over the air intake. Verifying the fuel shutoff as you did is the best though.
