My Dad got new job in 1974, as a factory manager and he came home with one of these ... I was so proud of him, I was 10 by the way. In September 1976, he picked me up from school in one of the early SD1's, and felt an equal surge of joy, not matched until, around 18 months later, I saw Cheryl Ladd in a bikini on " Charlie's Angels " ! . Both cars were the 3.5 litre models, which Dad had as Company cars until 1983 .. As for the SD1's, of which he had 3. one broke down only once, and then in a small town in Italy, where it took the local garage 3 days to fix it. The Garage workshop door would open each morning of the repair, where the men and boys of the town would gather to see this " wonder " car. One breakdown having driven 3 SD1's for nearly 7 years must be a record ! Dad always said he'd been blessed by " luck ", he passed away in May this year, aged 88 .. God bless, Dad, and thank you for everything ! 😪

My father owned one of the very first Rover 2000's available (Jan 1964), and I liked it so much I bought a 1971 P6B Series II (white with red leather upholstery - stunning). It was fun watching you explore with delight all the features of the car, and not only was I impressed with how fully functional it was, I was also *very* impressed with Claire's knowledge about the P6's in general. She was right about the rear seat width in the P6 being less than in the P5, as the P6 was designed from the outset to only carry 2 passengers in the back compared to the P5's 3 (with a bench seat). There are many innovative design features in the P6 that sets it apart from other cars of the era, as you will no doubt discover. For example, the 'tactile' switch gear is exactly that, as the plastic knobs were deliberately made of different shapes so they could be easily identified by touch in the dark -- even though each green knob is backlit. The wipers have an infinitely variable sweep delay. The heater blower is inaudible on the lowest setting, yet will still push ample heat around the car. The battery, being located in the boot, not only helps the front/back weight distribution but will also last much longer as it is isolated from engine heat and vibration (mine lasted 7 years before giving up the ghost). The inboard rear disc brakes reduce the unsprung weight. The front coil springs are mounted horizontally to give longer travel and thus a smoother ride. I could go on, but you get the point. Enjoy your own journey of discovery!

Absolutely love P6’s. I bought my father’s MK2 2000SC in Cameron Green as my first legal car at 19. Was forever being stopped as the police couldn’t believe I hadn’t stolen it. I was very spoilt. I bought another V8 MK1. However, as much as liked the beefier V8 the interior and spec was lacking. If I’d come across this on I would have gobbled it up for a project. 👍🏼

I once read a history of Rover cars. Apparently a Rover executive was at a boatyard in the US & saw a baby V8 in a corner, measured it up, & thought it was just what Rover needed. The engine was shipped to the UK & tried for fit in the P6. Rover then bought the right to manufacture from Buick.

Great cars! I had a yellow with black vinyl roof, the V8 is really easy to work on too. I would refrain from even touching the fuel reserve, you may find the seals in the valve (which is just sitting on the bellhousing, driver's side) leak and it's really fiddly to replace. I sold mine a few years ago and bought a series 3 XJ6 and I have to say the Rover P6B is the far better car and I wish I still had it.

Good to see you both I hope all is well. To be honest I was thinking of unsubscribing as we hadn't had a video for so long but here we are. Anyway I am glad you checked the oil first but one thing is for sure those engines are almost bullet proof. On the auto the linkage can get stuck as you found out but a bit of grease can free it up if memory serves. I may be wrong but I thought they were a '35' not '65' as in they didn't change them (the boxes) 👍👍between Mk 1 and Mk 2 but I will sit corrected! The Buick engine was licensed to Rover from Buick in I think the 50's so not stolen. I am sure Elton was just joking though. All the outer panels are bolted on including the roof so very easy to replace. The inner wings look to be fine apart from the odd bits that Elton pointed out. You would be very lucky to find a manual gearbox now, even in the 80's we had a hard time finding one. I think we went to Wales in the end. I am not suggesting you are going to restore the car but I just thought I would give you some information. It may be the case now that the Rover owners club can help people out but there was no internet back in the 80's! 👍👍
