Will Lowes and Ace Hardware allow me to swap $200 in damaged tools?
We can pretty much thank SEARS for setting the Gold Standard in hand tool return warranty.
Probably the best "Ship replacement to your Door" warrantied tools these days: Tekton: amzn.to/3n0KS4J
TOOL WARRANTY and HOW TO SWAP(continually updated)
EFFORTLESS:
-Tekton: amzn.to/3n0KS4J Email customer service and a new one will ship to your door
-Craftsman: amzn.to/3oCoGhI No receipt. Take to Lowes, Ace(not as reliable) or even Sears (MORE details below)
-Milwaukee hand tools: amzn.to/2Lue5Hx Call them and they will send out a new one
-Dewalt/Stanely: amzn.to/2W30TeE Call/Email customer service and a new one will ship
-Husky: amzn.to/3gH9Eom No receipt. Take to Home Depot
-Kobalt: amzn.to/379V05D No receipt. Lowes call 888-356-2258 if issues arise in store
-Duralast: No reciept. Take to Autozone
Klein amzn.to/3a3SdwD No receipt Home Depot or call Klein direct.
-Proto/Challenger/Plomb: Call/Email customer service and a new one will ship
-Great Neck: Autozone used to sell it an MAY replace otherwise calling Great Neck is required
-Gear Wrench: amzn.to/343Vbhc Call them and they will send you a new one
-Wright tool: amzn.to/3gBLDyZ Call them and they will send you a new one
-Empire tool: Call them and they will send out a new one
BE WARNED: HARBOR FREIGHT
-Pittsburgh Pro/Beaman/Doyle/Quinn etc: No receipt(sometimes). Exchange at Harbor Freight
HARBOR freight is notorious for not allowing warranties on some items without the original packaging stating Lifetime Warranty or Lifetime Warranty paper that came with the tool when new. These items are things like: torque wrenches, torque adapters, digital/mechanical calipers, hammers, number punches, and other Pittsburgh Pro items that originally came with Lifetime warranties. There seams to no issues with basic hand tools: wrenches, sockets, ratchets, pliers, or screwdrivers though sometimes they won't allow 1 socket to be swapped without the entire kit being handed over. HOWEVER, they are slowly killing Pittsburgh Pro Brand and replacing them with Quinn. For now they will likely swap Pittsburgh for Quinn but in 10 years from now, with their track record, if you don't have the original receipt/box they will likely decline you. They have faced lawsuits and lost for their deceptive practices. They also currently filter honest tool reviews to reflect a positive outcome as well. They do not hide that they do this and opening state they pick and choose which reviews to show. There are countless forums of people claiming their negative tool review was never posted. Do your own research before investing in their tools.
DIFFICULT: need to track down a truck to swap and or very picky.
-SNAP-ON: commenters say you can set up an online account and email them for a new tool now
-Matco: I would like your input other than in person truck swap
-Mac: I would like your input other than in person truck swap
-Cornwell: I would like your input other than in person truck swap
-SK tools: Email with pics and description. They are picky about "normal wear and abuse".
-Makita hand tools: local service center
European Brands:
-Wera: Contact the place you purchased from and or you will need to ship the tool back at your expense. Normal Wear and Abuse voids the warranty.
-Knipex: DITO
EXTINCT BRANDS
-Bench top : Kmart should allow swap for Craftsman but this varies widely by store. Calling Craftsman may get you a replacement.
-New Britain: No receipt. House brand for NAPA auto in 70's. Easy swap for current brand in store
-Plomb/Challenger: current owner is Proto: Call customer service and a new one will ship
-Crew Line/ Powerbuilt/ GM performance: Orielly Auto Parts will direct swap for current brand or call ALLTRADE TOOLS
-JH WILLIAMS: Snap-on owns but you need to track down a truck and maybe he'll swap you.
-Herbrand: ?
-Thorenson: Bought out and not sure who currently owns them.
And many many more I can't think of off the top of my head.
Craftsman tools: Lowes policy is technically to replace only item number for exact item number. So though I found friendly customer service reps you may not. ACE hardwares are all individually owned franchises so your mileage will vary widely on what they will allow to be returned. The few remaining Sears will still swap if they have them. You can always call Craftsman directly and they will likely mail you a replacement.

The Snap-On salesman walked up to my toolbox and started making fun of my Craftsman tools. I told him Craftsman has the same warranty, and, at the time, Sears was 2 miles from the shop I worked at. If I broke a Snap-On tool, I had to wait until he came in on Friday. If I broke a Craftsman, I could exchange it on my lunch hour. He never spoke to me again. I was so hurt! LOL

I have snapon craftsman and Carlyle ratchets with mostly craftsman sockets I prefer Carlyle because the ratchets feel good on the hand (not sharp on the corners like craftsman) and easier to replace at the local napa. The snapon ratchets I have are a better fine tooth and work better in some applications.

When i was a diesel mechanic(90s/early 2000s) our "strap" on guy had a chart up showing where a independent lab had tested 3/8s ratchets from about every manufacturer and of course the snap on came in first place but the craftsman came in a pretty close 2nd. I wrenched hard and heavy on everything from tractors to railroad equipment and my craftsman stuff stayedin the fight all day everyday. Was easier to replace sears never gave me and ounce of guff in a return or repair of a tool even when it was obvious i had put a cheater on it pulled enough Gs on that thing to make a gorilla fart. I miss the awe factor of the glory days of the sears tool area.

Snap-On tool dealers have a habit of going through tool boxes and looking for homemade tools, then evaluate them to see if they could be reproduced by Snap-On patented and put up for sale. At least going through my screwdriver drawer he kept my screw drivers in good shape,(This was done in the mid seventies). I have never had a Craftsman or Snap-On return questioned.

I do miss the sears by my house. When i was 17 i walked in with a rusted to shit craftsman ratchet, the manager and i were having s convo while he fixed it (back when they had repair kits) and i mentioned him that that was my first ratchet that i bought when i was 15 at a yard sale and that that was all i could afford, he pulled out a big box with bunch of tool and handed me 2 more ratchets, a 1/4 and 1/2 size. He told me those were there for months so i cold have em, still got em to this day

My dad, an electrician, always bought Craftsman BECAUSE of their warranty. Every so often he'd bring his "notched-shank" screwdrivers back, as they'd burn a notch in the shank after arcing in an electrical panel. Sears never batted an eye at him and promptly replaced the tool, even though they KNEW what caused it. Both Dad and Sears are gone now, but I have a box full of notched-shank screwdrivers I'll have to replace, except for a few that mean a lot to me as he always gave me a few of them for my own tool box!

There are countless comments below of people who have(or father) casually mentioned in a Sears to the tool guy they were buying a new tool because they lost the old one and Sears just giving them the new one for free. Sears did this as a gesture and kept people buying tools over and over. The entire lifetime warranty is a marketing scam. It's too get somebody to come in to replace a tool and have a cash paying customer back in the store so they can sell them on more items. The Craftsman ratchets always broke no matter how gentle you were on them but they didn't care because you kept coming back to the store to buy more tools every time you had it warranteed.

As the defective/warranty clerk at my ace, I've come to know alot about Craftsman tools, most times the same thing you did at lowes with the rachets will work at Ace. However, some Ace's are a bit more particular on model. On the bright side Stanley Black and Decker (Owners of Craftsman now) are discontinuing the older style of ratchet but still honoring the lifetime warranty with the newer style 120 tooth model. Personally at my Ace we do try to keep it like Sears swap the tag have a great day.

In 1982 I came home from the service to find the 6" vice replaced on the workbench at the sawmill. The old one was still under the bench (with the back jaw busted off) and it had Craftsman molded into the side. I carried it to Sears, sat the 50 or so lb cast steel on the counter and was told "Sears decided that a bench vice was no longer a hand tool a few years prior, but I could have any vice at 1/2 off." Got the new 6" home and there inside was "if it ever fails return for a full refund." Took that paper in and said "so a new vice is warrantied but my old one isn't?" They refunded my money.

The last time I tried having Sears honor my warranty, about three years ago, they refused to swap out my broken 1/4" drive ratchet. Instead, they said they would have to order (!) a rebuild kit, and repair the ratchet when the kit arrived. I just walked out, and got the kit myself online. In the '90s, they would just swap out the tool, no hassle. Glad to see Lowe's and Ace is swapping out tools like Sears did in the old days.

Craftsman has that as their paid-for forever guarantee. I worked for Sears when I was in college. I recall our hardware manager having a book that showed the *actual* cost of our Craftsman tools in Division 9 (tools). Most screwdrivers were made by WF (Western Forge) in the USA at the time. A $8.99 screwdriver actually cost $0.17 to make, was sold to sears for $0.65 and was sold on the shelf for $8.99. It was explained that the "replacement cost" was already built in and Sears woukd not take a loss, so ... "Satisfaction Guaranteed or Your Money Back" was no risk. He also explained that most people will never use a tool to their full use or a breaking point, so the data showed that they only replaced approximately 10% of tools sold and only made a profit. Good tools, good price, great guarantee.

I have rebuilt these junk ratchets dozens of times. Honestly these were crappy ratchets when brand new. They always broke and failed. The screwdrivers had a lot of heat treating issues that cause them to bend when removing or installing a screw and strip them out. Just because they stamp USA on mass produced Junk doesn't make it a treasure. The first time I broke a ratchet(not abusing) I took it in and the guy put it in a box of 40 others and handed me a new one. He said that was just this weeks haul and they had a 55gallon drum that was dumped on a monthly basis in the back. I stopped using these crude ratchets 15+ years ago after numerous rebuilds/swaps. I'll take a working tool for a broken tool any day. I expected these to be cheaply made in comparison from the USA made stuff. I was wrong. I took them home and put them side by side my Craftsman USA tools. These Taiwan/Chinese Craftsman are the nicest and best built Craftsman tools I have ever had in my hands. Everything about the fit, finish and function is flawless. My USA made Craftsman now look and feel like dollar store tools in comparison. These 3rd world countries are kicking our butts and making far better stuff than we ever did and we should take that as a wake up call. Apparently there are no real men left in America to build tools without complaining about union wages, working conditions, long hours, and health coverage. Shame on lazy American workers for allowing this.

@@sixtyfiveford I agree with most of your comment with the exception of a couple things. I never thought any craftsman tool was a treasure, and I definately don't think third world countries are kicking our butt in innovating technology and creating product. @sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 3 жыл бұрын
@@brentblack5025 Third world countries are stupid and I give them no credit for innovating. They just build what we tell them to build; essentially glorified slavery on a different continent. But this isn't a bad thing. We no longer farm fields with horses or mules, dig mine shafts with pickaxes and shovels, and now we no longer need factory workers doing jobs that destroy their bodies. Pretty much the only manual labor jobs Americans do are those that can be done with proper tooling/machinery to make the jobs as enjoyable and easy as possible. It's a win-win. We get better products for less, our dollars are stretched further so we have to work less hard, we are able to enjoy things like vacations, and we have longer life spans with far less workplace injuries. These factories didn't uproot and move overseas due to regulations. They did so because they have endless job openings that they cannot fill and cannot meet the consumers demand here in the US. The last few generations that are supposed to take these jobs have said no they deserve better, so we're left with older generations working the last few remaining factory jobs.

Go read a history book or watch a youtube video on how Americans had to literally fight for their jobs in the street when corporate bosses used the local police to imprison them for asking for their fair wage. MLK, Jr.'s last march was for garbage workers who were asking for equal pay. Go see how safety regulations were a direct cause of corporate America not giving a damn about the line worker. How many Americans ended uo with lung cancer bc of asbestos, lead in paint, etc.? BTW, it was the penny pinching boardroom of Sears that drove it into the ground. Look up former Sears CEO Eddie Lampert and see how creditors in the Sears bankruptcy filings are alleging his raping of Sears while he took record salary and bonuses, and that he drove into the ground so that he could sell the assets back to himself at a lowball rate. @@sixtyfiveford My father is dying, besieged by both emphysema and a metastatic colon cancer that’s migrated to his lungs. I shudder in recognition because I’ve nearly been killed twice by raging diseases: An unusually aggressive prostate cancer, and an uncontrollable ulcerative colitis..... Dad slammed drums in and out of the blaster, a bellowing beast that flensed 55-gallon steel drums to bare metal by bombarding them with steel shot. Dust devils reeled and squalled as shot pummeled the filthy barrels. All my father wore for protection was a pair of plastic goggles. Respirators, in those days, were for sissies...When Dad got home from work each day, my mother used a magnet to draw specks of steel shot from his eyes, ears and nose as he hacked up the day’s black work into his handkerchief. When he was hospitalized in 1980 with a work-caused lung infection, his doctors first thought he had tuberculosis.... Then there was the Bleak Lagoon, that bleeding manmade pond, its surface all braids and scales of paint and oil, caustics and solvents. It was all silt and slurry, scum and sludge. All this lethal offal seeped and oozed into the ground, into the rills and runnels that flowed beneath our town, where we all drank well-water. Though K.S.D. is long gone, the land made Superfund-clean, a creek still runs through the south side of the site. It’s where the men used to cool their beer in summer, and it still flows under Route 125 and into a 23-acre marsh that eventually gives way to Country Pond, where people fish, swim and own waterfront cottages. Caustic rinse water was dumped for years into a dry well next to that creek, where the trees died and no birds sang. Excerpts from Dana Jen ings writing about his dying father and the effects of working in hazardous conditions at Kingston Steel Drum. The well water is contaminated. When I complained, telling her that my broken ratchet cost me more than the standard ratchet she was giving me. She would not budge! I told her I want to talk to the manager. Many yeas ago I worked in Sears tool department part time. I used to rebuild the broken ratchets on the spot. The department manager loved this as he was charged either the cost of new ratchet or in my case the cost of the repair kit against his annual profit. Obviously a $5 repair kit versus a $20+ ratchet added up to quite a bit of change over a year.

Team once upon a time they just gave you a brand new Rachet, then no warranty on handbook that weren't a wrench wratchet or screwdriver, even though there was a 3 ft. High sign on the wall saying all craftsmen tools 100% guaranteed. Cutting back, towards the end they were even selling returned used tools as new, easy to tell from the dishevelled packaging and dirty tools, more cutbacks, they cutback all the way to bankruptcy.

@@bipedalbob, yeah... The Sears demise...😕 how did they manage to ruin what seemed like such a good thing? To this day, when I see a display for. Craftsman Tools, I turn away like looking away from seeing a grotesque scene... Every difficult job in my life seems to have had a poor performing Craftsman tool in my hand, that worsened the trouble I was working to repair. My new thinking is, I don't want a warranty, I want my tools to work well... Then, I discovered the magic of high quality tools like NAPA Carlyle ratcheting combination wrenches, and Bondhus hex drivers, Wera, Wiha... And a few others... New life for me, grab tool, TOOL WORKS AS EXPECTED. I have some old craftsman stuff that I might trade in someday, to then give the replacement as a gift, I'm just not sure I hate anyone enough to give them a Craftsman tool as a gift 😐

Been using Craftsman tools since I was a young man over 50 years ago. I've never had any major problems-but I have noticed a few Phillips screwdrivers are losing their grip and I've broken a couple of drill bits. If Lowes will exchange them, that's great! We're talking 50 year old tools, I'd say I got my money's worth out of them and then some!

I’ve used some snap on tools, & I can’t justify the price tag. I own a ton of husky, craftsman, & some autozone wrenches. The only thing I can see as being worth it is the snap-on scan tools. The power tools get Milwaukee, & idk abt the air stuff. (The thing w the air stuff is to just oil it up, & don’t run it dry.)

Wish I could post a picture of my receipt for my latest Sears warranty return adventure. I took in over $1200 worth of old ratchets, sockets and screwdriver and for even the sockets that were rusty, they allowed me to swap them out for a different tool if they didn’t have the exact size so I was given huge 30+ millimeter wrenches for random sockets. I felt like I was stealing even though I was given permission to do so. The receipts totaled close to $1300 for the few trips I made. Love my local Sears

I was a mechanic at Sears back when they did full service work before the big switch to just the simple repairs. As such I aquired quite a bit of craftsman tools because I could swap them right there if I broke one. I still have them all, and have a couple of ratchets broken internally. Good to know I can now get them replaced.

The whole demise of Sears was based on the fact that they decided to move towards apparel and away from stuff like tools and appliances. Their whole softer side of the Sears slogan didn't pan out and they didn't invest in marketing new tools to consumers. I'm sure with Stanley in charge of Craftsman now they'll market them and come out with new tools that make us just want to keep buying.

The employees at Lowes always give me problems, and usually get an bad attitude about replacing tools. They not only compare the tools appearance but also the numbers on them. I guess that the think the new ones will have the exact same numbers as my 30 year old craftsman tools. They always tell me that lowes replacement policy is that the tools must match exactly. I agree that if your replacing a 3/8 ratchet, the new one should be a 3/8 ratchet. But when I just tried to replace my broken 3/8 socket adapter with a new 3/8 one, the lady said they didnt match exactly, because the numbers on them were different. I told her that I wanted to speak to a manager. So the manager came and said the same thing, and added that lowes would not get credit from craftsman when they sent it back. So the manager passed me off onto the lady who worked in tools- so she could leave and not have to deal with me. The lady in the tool department, was an experienced older lady, and told both the service desk and the manager that the tool can be replaced. She told them that tools were the same and lowes does not return tools for credit. But throws them into the trash. Boy, they were not happy about what she said! Even though this lady wasn't a manager, she got on them and they listened!

They were cheaply made, mass produced to start with. A foreign made machine pumped these out by the millions and other than the machine being located in the US when it pumped it out, there's nothing USA made about them. If they were made by hand with American sweat they wouldn't have broken so easily. They're painful to use by today's standards and really have no place in a modern mechanics tool box. I used to work at a sawmill years ago, cleaning nails, bolts, screws, basically any metal out of old fir and heart pine beams to be reprocessed into flooring. We used craftsman nail pullers exclusively, and after beating on and prying with them for a couple weeks they would eventually break. The manager would carry a 5 gallon bucket of them back to Sears for exchange. After a couple years of this, the Sears manager said "No More", because he said we were abusing them. So then we all had to go to Sears to exchange our own when we broke them.
