She's been potted in Jail. Let me tell you something: no governor gets potted in jail unless they're an absolute bully that mistreats people. I don't think you could possibly imagine the beat down you're about to get if you do that to a governor in prison. Trust me, I've spent many years behind the door and been in 21 different prisons. I'd bet you my last pound this woman is an abuser who has mistreated inmates. Anyone who's been behind the door understands this. BTW, being potted means having a bucket of excrement and urine thrown over your head. Good officers are respected by inmates because they are few and far between. So many officers are psycopathic, narcissist, cluster B types who beat, humiliate and abuse their positions and often mistreat the most vulnerable mentally ill inmates.

@johnsmith - lol ,talk about a biased viewpoint . let's cut to the chase , prisoners don't have rights. That's a weak position to take . once you get out of prison ,assuming you do , then some ' rights ' are reestablished , but when you are in the can yo deserve to be treated horribly .

What she said about evil was a terrifyingly salient point. Despite all the factors that can contribute to a person's morality (external and internal) evil is ultimately a choice, you _choose_ to do it. It's a sobering realization that when we're desperately looking for a explanation for why an individual did something appalling - often under the misguided attempt to convince ourselves that "normal people don't do such things" - we are in reality ALL capable of doing evil. A moral framework is a hair's breadth away from carnage and cruelty.

Well yes, are you better off coming to terms with your dark impulses and not doing them or lying to yourself you don't have them and not being able to deal with them when circumstances tip you over the edge or many other psychological bumps in the road? Even psychopaths have the ability to intellectually make choices to do right or wrong. Of course you wouldn't hear about those that don't seriously break the law because even if they know they're usually not going to announce the fact they're psychopaths.

I worked for 10 years in an Australian prison and one of my senior officers was this older Maori woman. She was tiny, barely 5 ft tall, covered with tribal tattoos and with a buzz cut of white hair. She was such a formidable woman that the inmates respected her and considered her a mother/grandmother figure. She was firm but fair, accepted no nonsense, and let them know that she believed in their potential but also when she was disappointed in them. I remember one inmate in our wing got sacked from his prison job for constant lateness, and she found out the next day from other staff. When she questioned him as to why he didn't say anything, he said he knew he'd screwed up and that she'd be disappointed in him so he kept it to himself. After lecturing him thoroughly, she gave him another chance and gave him a job in the accommodation wing on the 'dish up' crew (working behind the bain maries serving other inmates at mealtimes). She gave him this job because his issue was tardiness, and he couldn't afford to be late in this job - the other inmates would hold him accountable if he was late at mealtimes. He HAD to do better. She was great to work under.

Several articles in leading newspaper this week pointing out serious concerns many people have with the Letby convictions. The evidence is almost all circumstantial and open to interpretation. This could be a terrible miscarriage of justice.

As soon as I heard the question "Which film or TV show best represents prison" question, I thought that Time would be the one so I'm so glad she mentioned it. Sean Bean and Stephen Graham, two of our greatest actors, an excellent script, excellent supporting characters. I loved it. There's a follow up on the way I'm happy to say

It's much the same for hospitals, hospitals aren't as interesting or exciting as tv portrays it. As noone is hooking up during shifts, we're too busy.

That she thought some of the guards were scarier than the inmates really says something. 😳 In many ways being a prison guard would be a great way for predators to have access to a large victim pool that society won't complain about if you hurt or abuse.

I watched this twice in immediate succession, just because I enjoyed her candid and calming voice. The epitome of structure and don't-fuck-aroundary. No bullshitting about her staff being perfect, but that there was, and always is, some level of corruption. Her emotion in talking about the escape (despite being kept to herself) was incredibly moving. A fraction of her competence and togetherness across the globe would fix a lot of issues. I hope she knows she's real top tier.

I was in a prison in Norway for 3 months or so as a so called "civilian worker" as I decided I had enough of being called into military service for a week every year. Anyway in those 3 months lots of things happened, I learnt a few things about humans and how they can behave. In terms of working in a prison I observed that the prisoners of course mostly were miserable, negative and depressed, but so were the guards. So I could never have worked in a prison, well not unless it was one of my last options as a job. It's a depressive environment.
