I'm now hoping for that because that would be the most devastating plot twist in anime/manga history. Going 1,000 episodes/chapters worth of an adventure just to find out the person you did it for and saved your life was evil or using you the whole time. Still, doesn't seem like Shanks is a bad guy.

Really hope this doesn't happen for two reasons: 1) would feel terrible 2) would feel incredibly forced as he's at least one of the strongest characters there is and luffy is going up against most of such characters either he'll win or make them allies,making shanks death rather redundant

@@leonmat26 I think that applies more to ppl like Roger and ppl from the past. While I'll doubt we will see all of shanks's moves or anything like that I am sure oda will give him one fight (even if it's his last) were we at least see some extent to his abilities even if he fights blackbeard and gets 1 shotted (which I doubt would happen) or if it's a half serious fight with luffy. We will at least have an idea of how strong he is before he dies or we just say goodbye. Also I definitely think there meeting will be before he becomes pirate king bc oda purposely said great pirate not pirate King. Imo it will be soon after luffy establishes himself as a true yonko by defeating kaido and maybe big mom. Imo after wano we are going to elbalf and that's where I think shanks is. I think we have one journey focusing and luffy/shanks and ussop learning from his father and the giants to be a great warrior finish that up say goodbye to sail off to raftel or the next island. Shanks runs into blackbeard boom he's dead finale of the yonko saga battle with blackbeard on behive/God valley/raftel.

@@darrenraphael lmao idk bout all dat. Shirahoshi can barely control her ability, and while the Sea Kings could take out most of Kaido's army, they're not taking down Kaido or Big Mom themselves. Kaido can just turn into a dragon a bolo breath them, and Big Mom can use Ikoku Sovereignty to wipe out a lot of them. Honestly the Sea Kings might even have trouble getting into Wano, considering the strange, turbulent sea conditions and the fact that Wano's on a mountain sized plateau.

I know the yonko are OP as hell, but it's worth mentioning that Jack got absolutely wrecked by Zunisha, who has nothing but large mass at its disposable. Clearly size matters a lot in the one piece world when you're talking that big. It's not obvious that a yonko could handle a near infinite stream of those types of sea kings.

Personally I subscribe to the whole theory that Luffy and Shanks will have a Davy Back fight, for several reasons. The first being that I can't see Shanks wanting to do an all out fight with Luffy because it doesn't fit his happy go lucky character, two having another giant fight with an emperor after Wano won't probably happen because Luffy will have taken two of them down in combat so I can't see Ora throwing us into another giant conflict so soon. And three it fits perfectly because Shanks is the kind of guy who would enjoy something like the Davy back fight, as it's pretty much a pirates party game.

Look at Kaido and Linlin, even the government cant do anything about them, fighting an emperor just means war. So Luffy becoming an emperor is a title the people would give him. I don't think you have your facts right... The redhaired pirates are never around. The only time they interacted with Luffy after the time he was a child was at the war while he was unconscious. It's not like the strawhats ever encountered the redhaired and ussop was missing or something

Shanks is absolutely Luffy's Mihawk figure. The groundwork has been laid for a classic arc structure where the Strawhats have to overcome a Redhat or close associate to achieve their goals. Luffy, Zoro and Ussop are straight forward, which would also be an interesting twist on the monster trio archetype

My personal theory? Shanks knows where Raftel is. And more importantly, Shanks knows what's *on* Raftel. Which will most likely be something that explains the history of Shandora and the Void Century. Knowledge that the World Government wants to keep hidden at all costs. Considering Shanks visited the Five Elders in the Reverie arc, there is some kind of connection between the Red Hair Pirates and the World Government. My theory is that the World Government is somehow holding Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates hostage, preventing Shanks from revealing the truth and forcing the Red Hair Pirates to prevent people from reaching Raftel. This will ultimately set up the encounter between Luffy and Shanks: Luffy will learn where Raftel is, but the World Government will force Shanks to stop him.

The reason they didn't go after Buggy was because they didn't know Buggy was in Roger's crew until the events at Impel Down. That's why they immediately turned him into one of their assets as a Warlord, and why following the abolishment of the Warlord system they immediately attacked Buggy's Delivery.

If they do fight, I see it as being akin to the fight between the Roger pirates and the Whitebeard pirates; a free-for-all where neither side is intent on destroying the other, but engaging in a battle based on mutual respect, with gift exchanges, or perhaps a passing down of sorts; the Red Hair pirates give the straw hats items that enhance their development. I can see this especially in the case of Usopp inheriting something from Yasopp. I do agree, however, that there most likely won't be a moment where Luffy actually returns the hat, not just because of the inherited will argument, but also the fact that, unlike his predecessor's, the world actually views the hat as the defining piece of Luffy's identity; his pirate crew is even named after it. This means Shank will most likely die of course, however whether he meets Luffy before then will simply be down to the writers; I can see it going either way. It's possible that their battle is actually interrupted by Blackbeard's crew and they have to partially work together in order to beat him, with Shanks sacrificing himself during the battle. I can also see this for the reason that Blackbeard's forces, on the face of it, completely overwhelm the Straw Hats up to where we are. There are also still so many narrative's that have been developing which you would think are nearing the boiling point; the revolutionary army, the now defunct Warlord roles and that impact on the power balance etc. It very well could culminate in a second paramount war; a good excuse for Luffy's branch crew's to be called into battle.

I personally think that Shanks was calling for Luffy to come and fight him once he became a big enough pirate, through his statement of returning the straw hat to him. What I believe will happen is that Luffy WILL fight Shanks and win, through whatever shenanigans, and Shanks will tell him to keep the hat because he is the better pirate

I disagree with your point at around 1minute. Luffy saying "As long as Shanks is not first" doesn't mean that he will necessarily fight Shanks. It might mean that he wants to gain enough power and THEN meet Shanks as fighting Shanks first won't mean that Luffy "has become a great pirate". Proving yourself by defeating 2 or 3 Yonkos might mean that he can now meet Shanks and have no fight at all. Just get ready for the last battle with Blackbeard and the World Government.

I can see it going like this. Straw Hat Pirates vs Red Haired Pirates in an all-out battle. Once it over the two crew drink and party together. Luffy tries to return the hat, Shanks refuses saying something like "What is Staw Hat Luffy without his straw hat?" After that Shanks goes to confront Blackbeard and either killed or rumored to be killed so Luffy sets off to settle the score with Blackbeard.

There is actually one small way a conflict is possible especially within story. That conflict actually involves barthamellow and his attacking a area that belongs to the red hair pirates. While I definitely think that will come into play later on

You guys are drinking the one piece shonen protagonist Kool aid. This did needs atleast a time skip and a half to come close to shanks. He gets hit with that one hitter quitter by kaido and in ONE WEEK he supposed to learn a form of armament haki that all of the og one piece characters already know and that's gonna defeat kaido???? Guys, let me remind you, if it weren't for katakuri stabbing himself, Luffy wasn't going to win that fight, snake man or not. Cracker actually cut his armorment haki and katakuri block mochi breaks Luffy hand that is coated in haki. He didn't even awaken his rubber fruit ability and y'all think one week gonna change all of that? Shanks out here practicing with mihawk who would eat luffy alive because swords are his weakness... Come on man. In order for Luffy to beat shanks, there would need to be a handicap like katakuri stabbing himself.

Ever since Ace died I always imagined some kind of twist when instead of fighting Shanks, Luffy would have to save him or something like that. It kind of remind me of the whole Impel down/ Marine ford situation, but I find it interesting. Like, Blackbeard do something to Shanks and Luffy come to the rescue and this time, success. It would be kind of interesting in terms of parallels between Shanks and Ace and Luffy's journey. Although I highly suspect something like that might never happen, especially with how the story is moving. Still, happy thought.

I would think their encounter would be similar to the encounter Gon has with Hisoka in the Battle tower arc where they exchange blows and Luffy proves himself by getting a hit in or something. Pretty much exactly what you said but I just thought I would make the connection between the two series.

I like the idea of Luffy and Shanks meeting and engaging in combat where Luffy shows Shanks how far he's come. And at the end of the fight, which I guess for narrative reasons Luffy would have to win, they both celebrate as if they had fought together and have been victorious. If that were to happen I wonder what the rest of the crews would do while their captains do battle? If nothing else I'd like for the Shanks battle to be something of a training exercise for the strawhats to take on Blackbeard's crew and win

Plenty of reasons. Luffy is an advocate for freedom. The world government is the literal shackles that hold the whole world in their prison. Once Luffy realizes this (and he already has at some expend based on him punching a celestial dragon) he will not sit idly by. There are many ways he could come upon the information needed to set him off. Including but not limited to...His father the revolutionary leader fighting against the WG. Coby his marine friend who opposed Aka Inu. His "rival" parallel blackbeard who could inform him since he is more likely to go after information like that. Shanks, his mentor who has ties with the WG. Not to mention his own struggles that stemmed from the WG for example Arlong, Crocodile, Ace's execution, Slave trading and racism ( with jimbei joining the crew) and much more. Not to mention Robin who will uncover the secrets of the world and can tell him. So yeah. A lot of reasons for him to do it. As for how he will do it it will be typical Luffy fashion. Charge in first. Ask questions later. He wont ask for help. But the thousands of people who he helped along his journey will give it to him any way. He has the power to attract people after all. He can hear the voice of all things. And he has emperors haki. He is the man that will free the world.

I’m conflicted. One side of me doesn’t want Shanks and Luffy to ever meet again, as Blackbeard kills Shanks, leading to insane tension going into the eventual battle between Luffy and Blackbeard. But I would adore seeing Luffys reaction to seeing his idol again in Shanks. In my mind, I envision this double spread panel of the flashback of Shanks giving Luffy the hat and Shanks saying return the hat when you become a great pirate in small flashback bubbles towards the side of the page, while in the middle, taking up majority of the page is the straw hat on Shanks grave while Luffys back is turned during a day where he’s officially the Pirate King. was having a discussion with my friend about this. He said they'll fight just for the fun of it to see who's stronger. Haki is used to gage each other's power so they can already do that to see how strong they are. I told him that shanks taught luffy to be a pacifist and not fight for petty reason so there needs to be more to the fight than just for the fun of it. Unless he's a yonko that he needs to surpass but we also thought luffy would defeat the seven warlords that never happened. The hat is a symbol that shanks uses; Its to imply that once he's strong enough to travel the same seas that shanks currently sail and return it. The returning of the hat is to say that you're at my level. Also that they never need to clash since roger was the strongest of his, as was shanks as is luffy. Akainu and blackbeard are higher on luffy's list. Also the only crew actually driven to prove themselves against another opponent is zoro. Luffy's concept is to be free in the ocean; being the strongest just happens to be an aspect of what makes him able to travel freely. Moreover since shanks has haki he must have been able to sense the will in luffy as roger did for him.

I just thought of one scenario though it might be out of character: Luffy being too stubborn to fight Shanks, while Shanks is hunting down Blackbeard. Shanks rejecting Luffy as he prioritizes Blackbeard seems like a pissibility, which irritates Luffy to the point of being mule headed in speaking with Shanks which leads into a frustrated combat. Where both fight each other seriously but not with intent to kill. This also gives room for the two crews to fight as Shanks orders them to keep Luffy away. Battles ensue, which leads to Shanks and Luffy reconciling with one another; which could result in Shank's death by the optomistic Blackbeard Teach.

My own headcanon is that mihawk is going to hang around shanks, who has the final road poneglyph and is on elbath, and who has usophs father on his crew, making a very happy heavy arc in addition to luffy. All of this culminating in a massive davy back fight over the road poneglyph that results in zoro finally defeating mihawk with techniques and power gained in wano (possibly making his swords into black blades, upping their maeto grade, or maybe he learns the giants sword blast technique in elbath) usoph having an arc involving becoming a brave warrior of the sea via his dad and elbath, and of course luffy defeating shanks. But that's just what I want to see and let's be honest oda will probably surprise us all

So i could see, When luffy is like taking some dangerous opponent in far away land, BB clashes with shanks and he kills him. Then luffy find out this, and This will begin the plot for the endgame of One piece. Then luffy wins, and after he his officially the strongest pirate, Becomes the pirate king, (imagine this in you mind), Luffy visits shanks Grave, in a spring time, Flowers are falling, and a sad music is being played. Then Luffy takes his hat off, we see a smile, and a tear in the eye. He places that hat on shanks grave, and say "i fulfilled my promise" This could be one real emotional moment, and i really want to see this

11:33 I'd say character development. All characters in one piece have a purpose. The team don't stand around and wait for Luffy and Zoro to save the day. The characters seem like they have a real relationship Super feels like office work. Impersonal. I loved when Zoro and Luffy had a problem with each other why Krillin never got pissed at Goku and had some issues to work out? Piccolo and Gohan should've fought. Freeza saga created die hards but one piece is the more in depth story
