I really like haki because it balances out devil fruits. Already overpowered fruits like Logias get nerfed a bit while "weaker" devil fruits like regular zoans get a huge increase in combat potential because they're already great at close combat which is hugely aided by armament and observation.

Agree to an extent. It does give zoans actual relevance when up til now they were kinda a joke. But I don't like that it brought logia down so much. Fighting logia meant you needed to use your brain some to figure out how to counter them. Luffy only beat Crocodile cuz he eventually figured out the water weakness and being rubber he was the natural enemy for Enel. And in case of 2 logia users the one that was at a higher level ie Akainu vs Ace would win out. Course with Akainu vs Aokiji who knows how that one actually played out in terms of their devil fruits vs each other and I'm sure other things factored into the outcome. Observation haki is just sort of battle sense so it's whatever. Conquerors haki is basically worthless against anyone with a name. Useful vs fodder and not much else

@@sslocke disagree on the conqueror's haki being useless at high level thing. pause for a moment. Luffy vs Chinjao. Luffy vs doflamingo. Luffy vs katakuri. Shanks vs whitebeard. Every time two big shots clash and both have conqueror's, it plays a part. I don't know what it is yet (obviously not knocking out your enemy), but I doubt it's just for the flashy black lightning effect. Otherwise Oda wouldnt include it, dontcha think?

@@TrigramThunder I think advanced conquerors haki allows you to bend the environment/ the elements not just other people to your will. This would be an explaination for the storm at Loguetown (presumably caused by Dragon) as well as the storm that separated Roger from Shikis fleet and how Shanks and whitebeard split the sky. It could also explain some of the more obscure powers such as how Shanks got to Marineford so quickly (conquering the wind) or Luffys Red Hawk and Thor elephant gun (conquering fire and lightning). So I also dont think Conquerors haki will always be useless in high level fights.

@@_-_sinexus_-_ i think the "natural element control" is more caused by armament than by conqueror's haki tbh. My reasoning for this is that many, many people can control fire and other elements who otherwise couldn't. boa marigold's fire snake hair, fossa's sword, hannyabal's naginata, kinemon's katana, katakuri's "yakimochi" attack, Holdem's fire attacks in wano, ryuma's fire dragon and zoro's response to it, luffys red hawk, king's nape flames (manga thing just in case), Sanji's diable jambe, doflamingo's "parasite/parasaito" fire thread, usopp's "gunpowder star", of course Ace Sabo akainu oven accino and all other fire power fruit users, lucci's "tobu shigan hi bachi" from rokushiki, etc I could go on but you get the idea. All of these use flames to some extent but obviously not all of them are conqueror's users.

If you have a logia and you're a competent user of the fruit, unless your opponent somehow figures out your natural weakness, assume you even have one, you're basically invincible in a fight without seastone... The moment logia was introduce haki must have been a future factor in the story

I agree without Haki the Logias were almost godly OP and if you couldnt fight them with their natural weakness you had no hope. Haki gave a lot of other characters a fighting chance. Plus the Haki levels gave lesser fruit users or non fruit wielders the potential to beat opponents with much more powerful Devil fruits. For example, it was pretty hard to see Rubber beating Magma before the Haki levels were introduced.

Honestly, i feel Haki saved Luffy's Progression (power wise). Let's be honest, while the Rubber fruit is a really cool strong one, it does have a lot of limitations and it doesn't hold a candle to MANY other fruits in the series (potential wise) especially logias. I felt the fruit by itself had a cap and cant hold up to powerful fruits like the Ice, Light, Venom, magma etc. Most logias can even do what the rubber fruit can do (in terms of extending and reshaping as Katakuri showed); but in addition to that many have a powerful element as well. So as the series progressed i found it hard to see Luffy matching these opponents in the future especially since he can't even hurt them. Then that's when Haki came in. First Haki gave Luffy hope of hurting Logias which was awesome. However, even if he can hurt them how much will rubber stand up to stuff like magma? They still had a huge advantage over him i couldn't see him closing. Then FINALLY the Haki versions and levels came along and finally gave me insight in how Luffy will bridge this gap and become the strongest in the series. Since luffy has so much potential for each version of Haki and there are devastating levels of Haki luffy is learning (like seeing future moves and attacking within the body), i feel like Haki is what will finally give him the power to beat the top characters.

@@farwhy6128 He’s a special paramecia. However the confusion comes from the first translation that was official. In the weekly chapter release he is referred to as a Logia by Jinbei. However, in the volume release this line is changed to “special paramecia.” So Oda basically changed his mind after it had already been released the first time. It’s one of the reasons people are still so confused about it in the fan base. Grand Line Review actually made a whole video on it, which is where I got this information.

If you're lucky you get THAT specific translation in some versions of the manga and anime.. Idk what the official said because funimation dubbed it to "How is this possible, he couldn't be using.." then it shows Luffy coated in blood implying he meant water. Which is weird since his weakness would be both haki and water but I doubt anyone including Oda would've thought of armament then since the next arc only had observation haki users

When Luffy found out how to punch Crocodile (water) I thought every Logia user had their own elemental weaknesses, so I became excited about finding out the way Luffy could defeat the Logia users we already knew. I remember myself theorizing with my friend about Ace or Smoker, but then Haki just could beat them all and it felt like a really quick solution to me :(

I don't really feel like Haki is really the focus of One Piece battles. I think it mostly just creates a new category of fighting skill that you have to be somewhat good at to exceed in battle. It simply creates another layer of depth to the combat in One Piece without really taking anything away from Devil Fruits. It's just the fight against Katakuri that was really focused on Haki because of his exceptional usage of Observation but that is just his way of fighting and I think it wasn't just his Observation that made him so formidable but also his mastery over his Fruit. Now in Wano Luffy is discovering an advanced application of Armament but really, the only reason why Haki is what Luffy has been working on for the past two arcs is because he also has pretty much gotten the best out of his Fruit at this point except for the awakening, which I'm sure will still be a big thing in the future and put a bit more focus on Devil Fruits again. Lastly, we don't really know what the combat applications of Conquerors Haki are yet. We don't see it ever really helping anyone in a battle except for it's ability to basically clear crowds of small fry. So I don't really think that it's a prerequisite for being a worthy opponent for Luffy to fight. TLDR: Haki does give you a considerable advantage in battle, but it doesn't really overshadow Devil Fruits in a meaningful way. It just creates a new skill that you can outmatch your opponent with.

Vanilla Gorilla well haki has been foreshadowed even before marineford.... so it’s not like they asspulled haki smh, haki is most important thing in series, if you come from a strong race(minks, Kings race, fishmen) and have kings haki, grow your haki exponentially, you can be yonko tier, there’s nobody YC tier without haki(besides jack) and that’s merely 1 person, without haki or element counter you wouldn’t be able to touch logia users.... I’d rather have god haki like Roger and Garp with no DF, then be a monster beast with a DF, even big mom a yonko had to use haki against boundman to not take damage... people gotta stop with the bullshit

I only have one issue with Haki - that fights are all about haki these days. I miss the diverse and scrappy fights from the pre-time skip. Like Luffys fight versus Crocodile where he had to use his weakness of liquids to overcome him. The fights are much more straight forward now I feel. There are less "surprises". And I'm one of those that don't think he need to get a new arsenal to improve his prowess. Edit: thought of another issue. Everyone seems to be getting haki powers now. -.-'

Andreas karlsson well you’re just a sore loser, luffy vs katakuri is best fight in series, also you don’t know what type of DF users you’ll run into, but Kaido’s crew seems straight forward, all zoans, meaning they’re turning into animals/creatures, we might run into a mythical zoan deity like sengoku’s but I doubt it, but DF powers are still tricky, look at katakuri and crackers abilities, but haki is the main factor about winning battles, usually the person with stronger haki wins, but luffy defeated doffy even know his armament haki was stronger, but other than that haki is a huge role especially Future sight

@@GameBreaker1055 All forms were created throughout the paradise arcs before being brought together under one name. Alabasta has zoro using armament, skypeia has observation, and enies lobby has conquerors. Each of these arcs came back to back while introducing one of the three types. Not to mention "haki" is as vague a term as willpower, and has already been used once before to define something which could be felt and measured. When Blackbeard saw Luffy's real bounty, he said he found it odd someone with such willpower, "haki," could only be worth 30 mil. And this was back in jaya, years before "haki" would be brought up again, coupled with arms and observation. So, I think it's safe to assume an overall idea/system of "haki" was thought up years before being properly introduced, or at the very least had already been in development since alabasta.

I wouldn't say Oda necessarily planned or knew he would implement Haki from the start, but he deliberately adds touches and elements of mystery and intrigue, which he later on manages to weave back into the story and flesh out and expand upon. He, much like G.R Martin lets the story and his imagination run wild for the most part. Sure he has a template and very concrete image how things will end (what the one piece is, what the crew will do after that etc), but how he gets there is a entire different deal. If he had planned everthing out to a T, he wouldn't have mistakenly claimed multiple times how close the story is to the end.

This video pretty much hit the nail on the head for me Ever since haki's introduction I've kind of had with issues with it, both conceptually and how it introduced, and while Oda has done a great job easing us into the transition into a Haki-era of one piece, that's more due to Oda being a good writer than on Haki as a power system. Haki just always seemed like making the best of a bad situation for me, since Oda kind of wrote himself into a corner (as you mentioned) vis-a-vis Logias, Mantra, and even Shanks + Sea King, and Haki just kind of seemed to me like an all-cure for these issues. Haki is just another way to add more complexity to fights. One piece can't stay teg same forever, if they didn't introduce haki I think fights would be get boring pretty quickly as Luffy would fight deviel fruit users that have godlike powers that he simply can't beat or would have to use plot armor to beat because their fruit is just so much better. And logias would be op as hell

Enel was a great antongist from how he used his devil fruit in conjunction with observation haki and the fact that he could still be hit made the arc so much better I personally believe Oda aimed for a more refined version of this fight when haki was introduced

I strongly disagree. When the 3 calamities where introduced no one was making theory videos on what their haki was, it was all about their devil fruits. Out of the 3 sweet commander only katacuri(pardon the spelling) had his haki expanded on. No ones talking about Alkainu and Blackbeard’s haki, they’re talking about their fruits.

Fun fact: the only time a character in One Piece won "because of his better haki" was Zoro against Pica. Usually, the character who has the better haki loses (see Boa Sisters, Cracker, Katakuri). So I don't think I quite agree with haki being the "be all end all" of One Piece combat.

Rather than looking at hypothetical downfalls of haki, why don't we look at a One Piece world without haki: Shanks became a Yonko either by being ungodly strong like a DBZ character without reasonable power system like ki or nen, or somehow having a Devil Fruit yet still find a way to swim. Mihawk becoming the best swordsman in the world by either never fight against anyone with a logia fruit or exploiting their elemental weakness and thus not fighting like a swordsman at all. Enel not knowing anything outside his immediate surroundings because without observation combine with his fruit he can't pass judgement upon his domain like a God. Anyone who is anyone in the world would have to fight like a Yugioh Character because Devil Fruits will dominate anyone who is without prep time or exploitation. Freaks of the world like Kaido and Big Mom having no real way to explain their power other than they were born freaks. And finally no more creative use of Fruit power in combination with their haki, examples like Enel's omniscience, Katakuri's future sight shift evasion, Luffy's Gear 4th will not be possible in a world without it. Lets face it, if Luffy became the pirate king because he somehow out smarted the likes of Blackbeard or Im Sama, I would wonder if I have been reading the wrong manga.

Big mom and kaido are already physically so strong without haki in fact the only reason Kaido needs armament at all is to touch logia users other than that he doesn’t need it and luffy is already shown to be smart and creative in fights if you have paid attention

Because to me creative fighting has not really been diminished by the introduction of haki at all and in fact the creative usage of haki (for or against opposing haki, abilities and the combination thereof) has been driving the fights of post time skip so far. However I do see a problem with your interpretation with my points, I will explain: Kaido and Big Mom's powers might (and to me heavily implied to) be haki or soul based rather than pure physical power, Big Mom's freak out cause her body to sustain damage much easier (in fact she bleed by simply kneeling), and Kaido's PTSD due to Oden left him penetrable by the scabbard's blades, if they were really naturally ungodly strong physically I don't think their mental state will make them less so. As for my point about Luffy is that his ingenuity in battle at most only equalize his chances against his opponents, not once did he beat a major adversary with his brain alone, and for him to beat a major opponent like a Yugioh or Jo Jo character is really strange for One Piece to do. Since haki is manifestation of will and will can be broken, haki can also be broken and cant be manifested. Moria's will was broken by Kaido and Crocodile's will was broken by Whitebeard. Both of them decided to settle to Paradise part of Grandline.

First, i need to say i think Haki was planned from the beginning. Which can be shown, by the Seastone usage of Smoker. In the early days to fight a devilfruit user, seastone used to be our goto thought( which i hope they bring back somehow). Second i think haki is super nessesary and make the universe a little simpler because we had to many opportunitys/power scaling issues( for example akainu). so i am happy to see what will come in the future.

Haki concept not really intended at first place, I bet Oda not even noticed that at early stage of One Piece. Haki came along with story progression piece by piece as a add up power for those who wield strong spirit and determination within themselve. As unknown power becoming more apparent when strawhat stepped toward another level enemy and surrounding, Oda finally decided to properly introduce "Willpower" or Haki which sometimes can be observe in this real life. This kind of concept along with Rokushiki and skills level make One Peace world beautifully balance without relying on one source of power.

Going back to your Doflamingo argument, awakenings and the different combinations of haki and devil fruits such as Gear 4th and Katakuri make the manga more expansive in terms of battles. Not to mention, Luffy struggled with Cracker, a character whose primary strength came from his devil fruit and not his haki but still had strong armament.

I like what Haki did to make the new world fairly distinguishable from the initial Grand Line adventures. When Kaido mentions that the worst generation were just “playing pirate” before their arrival, it sets a tone for why the Yonko and Admirals are at the point of strength and acknowledgment they are, and also starts to paint a picture of what Luffy has to overcome if he’s ever to reach the peak of power and infamy that is the Pirate King.

Haki as a system is flawed which is a shame as One Piece is so great. I remember Blackbeard and Ace's fight where he was able to touch him. That was a huge moment and made Blackbeards devilfruit seem awesome. He even stated something "I wonder how long it's been since you were punched like that" and yet now we know in the new World he probably got punched like that all the time as everybody can use armament haki. However, as you said the problem of Logia users made this somewhat problematic. We couldn't just have luffy spray sea water over them like he did for crocodile nor could he continually ensnare them in seastone handcuffs. Having Haki solved that issue for us so all of the straw hats could fight more devil fruits. I think the real issue is we didn't get to see the various straw hats learn haki, except usopp. Usopp being able to see everyone's auras because he had to hit his target and his will was strong was awesome. Same as the first time Luffy used conquerors. Imagine if we had a battle worn Zoro who is struggling to stand. Behind him is someone or something he has to protect. As his enemy begins to attack Zoro's resolve gets so strong his swords turn black and he not only stops the attack but cuts straight through it. That would have been a huge character moment for him and made us feel like we were there when he learned it.

Regarding your last paragraph, well actually we did see something happening along those lines with Zoro, twice in fact. It was the final attack Zoro used against Mr.1 and Kaku respectively. Zoro didn't have any buisness, but as usual his resolve, determination and ambition, which are the main drive behind Haki is what helped him pull through. Zoro's Iai Shishi sonson (One style draw, lion song) that he used against Mr.1, which was without a doubt his most destructive technique before time skip, is now implied to always have been an application of Gouken, Ryou the advanced armament haki, Luffy and Zoro are currently mastering to have a chance at taking down Kaidou. Then in the case of Kaku, Asura and also Diamble Jambe are both Techniques that considering all we know so far about Haki, could very well be unique derivatives/variants of it. Granted I'm pretty sure there weren't meant to be at the time, but like many other concepts Oda has left vague and mysterious he very well might retroactively adress and explain or even further explore them as such. There has to be a good reason as to why Zoro hasn't used Asura, his strongest technique pre-time skip yet.

You can CP9 didn't need haki. It wasn't useful. They were there to kill people in the grandline and 99% of them didn't have it. CP9 could have destroy everyone beside the straw hats. Heck when they were 100% they destroy the same people that the marines sent after the straw hats after the CP9 fight. Croc not having Haki also make sense. He could have been a rookie in a stronger pirate group and never learn it. The same way buggy never learn and didn't care for it. My take is that CP9 is a covert assassination unit, therefore haki is unnecessary in their work, they only ever fight head to head because of their hubris, not to mention they work necessitates a viable way to control aka a kill switch scenario, if they actually know haki eliminating them if compromised or turned will become impossible. As for Crocodile I really don't think he is much of a fighter at all, remember his goal was to get Pluton and nuke whoever stands in his way, with his goal being Whitebeard I don't think he ever believe he could take him out mano a mano, besides his fruit made him a classic Glass Cannon that out of all Haki only future sight is useful (he can kill anyone through draining by touch, using long range attacks from outside his opponent's zone, turn his surrounding into desert without awakening, so armament haki is not going to help his dps much, nor does armament being much of an added threat to him since his invincibility is easily canceled by any water anyway.) but as we know future sight can only be gain through high level conflict putting him directly in danger, which is counter intuitive to his planner type persona. In conclusion I think he puts more stock in military and devil fruit power than personal combat strength explaining how Luffy (a physical power house with or without haki) defeat him in close quarter combat, and how in a war zone situation he is able to do so well (he is sniping and sneak attacking people while concealing his presence with his fruit). Of course both of the above character has been awakened so to speak to the theater that is the new world, so I can guarantee that next time it will be very different.

Well okay. 1. When teh strawhats first fought the cp9, they weren't at their 100% strength. I mean, the y lost Usopp and Robin seemed like she was leaving the crew and never coming back. They were broken and direction less, they never had this kind of challenge before. Don't you think that would affect how they fight? Oda strictly designed it to be interpreted that way. When they fought cp9 again they knew what they had to do and were determined to do it, meaning they could fight at their absolute fullest potential. Also, them being similar strength to the cp9 was hinted when Sanji almost broke Blueno's armor, so yeah. 2. I don't remember where i heard this but a while ago I heard that Oda actually said he regrets writing it that way and would write Alabasta differently if he had the chance. In his own words, "it was to early for luffy to fight crocodile". I mean, Crocodile holding his own in the war was probably his way of making up for it. So yeah lol. 3. And Enel losing to luffy I mean.... it wasn't that bad. Luffy being immune to enel's attacks makes sense in teh context of the one piece world, I get that Lighting could probably burn through rubber but i don't feel to badly about luffy being enel really. I can see why you don't like it but I have nothing against it. So yeah. No series is perfect and one piece has its flaws but that doesn't put down one piece's quality in anyway. - Back during Water 7, Luffy is able to briefly contend with Rob Lucci when the Galley-La crew confronts Luffy/franky while Franky gets casually fucked into the ground by Kaku (consistent with Franky fighting with Fukurou and Luffy fighting Lucci during Enies Lobby). It isn't until the resolve of the strawhat crew is shaken that they start getting doing worse against CP9 during water 7. As they start to shake it off, they begin perform much better. Sanji nearly breaks right through Blueno's tekkai on the sea train. Once Luffy fights Blueno properly, despite being tired from soloing like 1,000 marines, he manages to keep up with him perfectly and blatantly overpower him, even when using Tekkai. Gear 2 Luffy absolutely DESTROYS Blueno. Right after, Luffy eats some meat and returns to full strength. The contention between Water 7 Strawhats and Enies Lobby strawhats comes from people not reading the manga. s2.mangadex.org/data/69be02fea84da65f7c7981e0e3e1647f/x20.png - Mihawk wasn't really using haki much if at all during marineford so Crocodile briefly "clashing" with him doesn't mean anything ( we see that Buggy split when slashed by Mihawk, something that wouldn't happen if he was using Haki). Crocodile also clashed with Doflamingo, someone who wasn't even taking the fucking war seriously. So far, Luffy's win against crocodile is legitimate. - Eneru initially started losing to Luffy because he was overconfident and ignorant of rubber. Luffy gained the upper hand again when he made his attacks unpredictable ( which makes sense since low level observation haki simply reads a move's intent). The final clash, Luffy was almost insta-killed by a spear poke from Eneru. Eneru ultimately was defeated because Luffy's attack was too big and too fast for him to dodge, something that was also confirmed to be a weakness of observation haki (it doesn't boost your actual speed so people MUCH faster can still speedblitz you).

I feel like Haki can be expressed in different ways, like for example: Sanji's Diable Jamble and Zoro's Ashura are forms of haki I believe. There's no other explanation for those forms besides haki since neither of them have devil fruit abilities. That's one of the ways haki has been personalized. I agree and disagree with you 1. For starters just because you have more haki than someone that doesn’t mean you’re gonna win a fight. There’s still other factors like DFs, fighting style, and techniques at play. 2. Haki was created to counter logias out of universe, but in universe its more so to amplify one’s current abilities and techniques. Like DFs, Haki is more devastating when you use it cleverly with your currently abilities. For example, Katakuri wasn’t a monster because of his advanced observation. He was a monster cuz of how he combined it with is DF to dodge attacks like a logia would. Even for enel, all haki did was amplified his base ability maximizing his range with his observation. YOU CANT FIGHT WITH HAKI ALONE. Most likely Garp has some other techniques and abilities that makes him formidable and haki is just the icing on the cake. 3. Haki is used differently based on the person’s fighting style. Meaning a swordsman might find a different way to use and apply haki that a brawler wouldn’t be able to, and vice verse. This would create some sort of versatility. This have already been proven in Wano with Luffy learning how the wano swordsman uses haki

Moment when I thought that devil fruits are not enough, was when Ace fought Smoker. And they both decide to draw and there is no point in fighting longer. So something like armored haki was really necesery for all potential logia draws. Also I feel that Kings haki was planned frome very beggining, but when Oda relised that some matchups via devil fruits only can be really hard to make resonable, he expand idea to armored and observation. I also think that Haki is both a narrative necessity (since, as you mentioned, otherwise Logia users would probably be invincible), and a bit of a retcon, considering that none of the really high level fighters, like Crocodile or the CP9, had been using it until it was introduced in the Sabaody arc.

My only issue with Haki is the supposed rarity of Conqueror's Haki. Oda said that it's only present in one in a million/several million people, and since Luffy possesses it, it made him feel special, and the parallels drawn with Roger, almost made it feel like Luffy is destined to be the Pirate King. Yet after that, we see Oda basically handing out Conqueror's Haki to everyone and their mum. Like even Kidd and fucking Don Chinjao have it (who even remembers Don Chinjao, he's basically an irrelevant side character, that was kind of there for comedic value, during Dressrosa). Every character that Oda introduced with Conqueror's Haki diminishes its value, and makes it almost boring tbh

So far the only main arc villain that we have seen really on his Haki more than his devil fruit was Katakuri and even then I can make the argument that was only the case because Luffy had to learn future Haki. Conquere's Haki is cool. It not only gives the characters a "I am the boss" moment, but also is a good solution to clear the field of unnecessary fighters. Observation Haki is neat. The idea of someone being able to focus to an extend that it allows them to feel the worlds movement around them is a tricky thing, Armorment Haki is stupid. Haki was necessary to somehow cut down Logia users, yes. But there was no reason to to... THIS! Not only does it make any weapon equal, basically saying "screw you" to Zoro's special sword, it straight up eliminates Luffy's ONE direct weakness, which are blades. When Haki was first introduced, there was no sign or armorment. Rayleigh just blocked Kizaru with his sword and the Amazones fired enhanced arrows. I just find the armor part to be incredible weird bad unecessary.

8:17 If you read 199, after Luffy punches him for the first time, Crocodile has an internal monologue "Impossible...Did that kid...?". Crocodile at that moment hadnt figured out that Luffy used water (even the panels themselves try to hide that, making it seem that Luffy just punched him) so i argue he thought of haki. 8:31 Its just a unique case of a retcon that can easily be explained logically "Oh Crocodile was too cocky in Alabasta and thought he was gonna survive in the world just with his logia but after being humilliated and captured, he changed his mindset and trained mentally and physically". It doesnt mean anything about the continuity of haki imo. 8:41 Haki was first mentioned in Jaya when Blackbeard found out about Luffy's new bounty. He comments that his previous bounty didnt match his haki (Oda referrences that scene again in Impel Down, when Blackbeard says that Luffy's haki has gotten stronger compared to when they first met). If you take this instance as a starting point and look at the previous potential instances of haki usage retroactively, then i'm sorry but its not clear at all that Oda didnt intent haki to be a secondary power system from the start. Let me point out those instances: Van augur shooting down the seagulls. Luffy vs Crocodile (certain dialogues). Zoro vs Mr.1 Nami predicting the weather even when she was sick during Drum Island (some of the dialogue is really interesting. Vivi comments on Nami's ability and says that "its like she feels it in her bones" or something like that) Luffy finding Mr.3 real body among the clones and saying its instinct (Vague but worth mentioning) Mihawk's black blade (the only black blade we see in the story until Shusui) And ofc Shank's glare in chapter 1 Another instance that confuses fans is the fight between Ace and Blackbeard. The dialogue between them when they fight is kinda weird and i think that is partially VIZ's fault so i'm not going to touch on that. However, there is one instance that really caught my eye. Before BB and Ace fight, Van Augur shoots at Ace but the bullet goes right through him. Right after, we see Van Augur grin menacingly. As we know from Jaya, Van Augur can use CoO and we also know that you can imbue haki on weapons so my guess is that he put haki on the bullet and tried to test Ace (At one instance, i dont remember when in the manga, probably during the Ace and BB fight, Van Augur said that he doesnt like Logias because they are too confident in their abilities and let their guard down easily, so it would make sense why he would try to test Ace).

I like observation and armament haki - the concept of anyone in the world being able to augment their skillset with these abilities is nice. I feel like those have mostly been handled well, and that it's a per-requisite for antagonists is fine. That anyone can develop it through training and the way The New World and the pirates that navigate it are hyped up as serious business who have been doing this for a long time all combines to make it believable that you reach this threshold where just about everyone has it. Conqueror's haki bothers me. I don't completely hate the idea of it and what it can do. It bothers me much for the reasons you outline, we're told "there are special people with this special power" and suddenly things feel less believable and more coincidental. It's a special power for special people... like everyone Luffy will fight seriously from here on out. The more people Luffy fights against who have it, the less special it feels, and the more it feels like Zoro and Sanji need it just to keep up. If they're supposed to be the left and right hand of a yonko they're going to have to compete with characters like Doflamingo and Katakuri at some point and that means having conqueror's haki. It just kind of snowballs away from being special the way it's been managed.

Also i get how you feel but Haki really helps bridge the gap of abilities and allows for oda to not have to constantly go by "how much stronger your devil fruit is than mine". He doesn't have to keep making more and more powerful fruits until he runs out of ideas and instead he can make any fruit even Candy, Mochi and biscuits have the potential to match more powerful fruits with Haki. Plus non devil fruit users had little hope of reaching the top without a fruit until haki. I dont think its bad that haki is needed now in combat cause it does show that characters need to be at a certain level now to survive and cant only rely on fruits. In Katakuris case i think he was Oda showing the potential of advanced Haki to be superior to fruit abilities and even better combined too of course. I think this gives versatility to combat and Luffy will need this now. Cause his rubber abilities have have a limit and Haki is what he mainly needs to grow to match top opponents.

At first I didn't really like, but after sitting on it for awhile I came to think of it as being like the "meta" for the new world, where DFs kind of were for Paradise (very rare in four blues but common in GL). It rebalances everything while keeping unique DF abilities just as interesting. Haki is also basically the price of admission to NW, if you don't have knowledge of Haki expect to get btfo by the Yonkou crews.

Such a nice discussion on an interesting topic.So let me give my two cents as the faceless weeb on the internet that i am. For me, both observation and conqueror haki were very intriguing and uniqe enough concepts that elevated the battle experience of the story.Because they offer uniqe and tactical advantage over your opponent rather than brute power. With armament however it's different;you can disagree with this, but to me it's pretty blatant that the CoA was introduced as a "shortcut" for Oda so that he can create ridiculously broken DF but not think too hard about how to combat it. And it's interesting that of all the 3 haki CoA was hinted at the last.I'm just saying.... Again, with the issue of continuity,that only applies to armament as well. Not everybody has the will of a king; not everybody has the awareness to learn observation. But as we've seen with armament,even fodder soldiers are able to utilize it.So there's no practical excuse why characters like Crocodile didn't have it other than "oda had not thought about it". So all the problems i do have with Haki as a power system,pretty much revolves around CoA. As for the other two types, I am pleased with how they have been handled so far.

I love this video, great analysis. But you are forgetting that Oda hasn't fully introduced devil fruit awakenings. So, after Wano and Elbaf ends, there should be a rise in more devil fruit based powers again. Which would make fights how they were at the beginning of the series again. (definitely subscribing)

Would Katakuri be able to create mulitple arms, legs, giant donut fists, spiked arms, whip like appendages without his devil fruit? was there any attack Katakuri landed on Luffy that wasn't using his devil fruit? Would Katakuri have been able to avoid attacks as smoothly as he did without his devil fruit? I wonder if big mom would be able to fly, use a talking sword, shoot lightning, shoot fire, or create disney land without her df. 5:35 again most Haki users we've seen have Devil fruits too, so no we don't know how the interaction will go down. 5:45 I disagree, as Devil Fruits are very much still around and as creative as ever 7:35 this isn't true at all, Luffy was the one that gained the most from using Haki. Franky, Usopp, Nami, Sanji, Brook and Chooper all improved and expanded on there existing abilities. And Zoro just got better and stronger at cutting things, he and mihawk would already be strong without Haki whatsoever because they're swordsman. and How does usopp using observation Haki (one of the more unique forms of it too!) take away from him being a better a sniper, he's still a better sniper. 7:45 I disagree completely for reasons above, Haki has not forced anything into a narrow path. All the characters still have there Devil Fruits and new ones are still being introduced every single arc. I do agree that the introduction of Haki as we know it now (specifically Armanent) has opened up some continuity issues, that's a valid point against it. But I think it's a fair trade-off for something that has been nothing but an addition to the style of combat and creativity we know, not a replacement as your frame it.

I would counter that you really need Haki in One piece. Otherwise how would you countet LOGIA type users? That would make them so OP! Also the premise that a character is strong just because of a fruit they ate is not as satisfying compared to sheer willpower - Haki which is gained by extreme training.

I would counter by saying that Logias bring OP is already countered by their rarity in the series (only a dozen logia users in a manga almost 1k chapters long), and not only that but they themselves provide unique challenges and fights. Both Crocodile and Eneru, despite being Logias, offer completely different stories and fights that would have been much more bland with the use of haki (just look at how boring Smoker vs Vergo was). Logias being OP forced the characters and writing to be more creative and to be smarter, because you have to be creative and art to beat a Logia!

@@coolwaters070890 The only reason Haki was good in the Luffy/Katakuri fight was because it was observation Haki, which we've rarely seen used, and it was about leveling up Haki. The Haki itself played a small role in the actual fight, with choreography being great because Luffy was fighting someone with similar, but better, powers. Like Luffy didn't beat Katakuri because his Haki was better or because he was stronger, that fight wasn't about that. And yeah, Akainu and Kizaru would be OP without Haki. Want to know who else is OP without Haki? ANY OTHER LOGIA. But Luffy has beaten Logias through other methods, the fact that Luffy CAN defeat Logias without Haki is a testimant to how much he continues to grow. When someone does fight Akainu/Kizaru, we know it'snot going to be like the crocodile/Eneru fights because why would they get creative when they can just punch them.

@@Haikami Bruh you totally can, you just have to, you know, be smart and creative about it. Literally every Logia has a natural weakness that isn't Haki, that's the entire point. You can totally douse Sakazuki in enough water to counteract his magma, similar to Crocodile's sand. You can totally use basic ass mirrors to counter Light. Darkness is the only one you don't need to counter because you just have to punch the user hard enough, that is literally the only (and major) weakness to the Yami fruit. Eneru could turn into goddamn Lightning, his devil fruit is canonically considered to be one of the best, and all it took to beat him was fighting him with his natural weakness. Haki was not introduced to be the end-all of Logias, they were legitimately designed to be near invincible with the only way to beat them being to have more than just "punching hard" as a fighting style.

You have to be quick enough to get kizaru to bounce of even then he has the control to stop and just kick you in light speed. So yes Haki is still needed. Also it’s not just “ hit harder” Haki can actually improve a DF user power and it’s ment to be able to hit them you can’t just spend most of the time discovering the enemy weaknesses they won’t let you or give you time and can be impossible like ceacser he was a powerful DF user with out Haki.

It can still be considered a supplement as Haki buffed all devil fruit powers. Armament let paramecia and zoans stand om equal ground with logia's, while logia fruit can make amazing use of observation as shown by katakuri and his "special" paramecia.

To me , Id always felt like there was some hidden force at play as early on as luffy vs arlong as hed gotten way stronger the moment he was 200% done with arlongs bs. onepiece has this air of destiny to it that feels way more legit then other shows with there prophecys and chosen ones. its more like the one choose to be the one.

Maybe there could be a character that doesnt have conquere haki and still be looked to as a threat or not look silly. But it would take making their character interesting. Them knowing they dont have it drives them to get better. Now the concern about needing haki to be relatively strong or improving I can agree cause characters like Chopper despite the huge use of his devil fruits feels not to have such a big fight since the Fishman arc. I dont have to say anything about Nami and Robin cause.. it shows. I just feel members in the strawhat need to make up for lack of power in some regard nowadays.

I think something like haki needed to be implemented at some point, because while df's are more versatile and interesting they can make fights seem kinda goofy and less serious, like if some random bloke can eat a powerful devil fruit and somehow be a threat to luffy, were as haki csn only be attained through years of rigorous training. With haki introduced luffys opponents are strong because they've put in years of work to get to were they are, not just because they ate some fruit and got special powers. Though tbh i woulda preferred they just expand on the awakening of devil fruits and just focus on that instead of introducing haki, maybe a df awakening could have had multiple stages or something that woulda been more entertaining, n i dont see why so many people need conquerers haki like its supposed to be rare.

Revisiting this video, reminded of Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, where something called skills that were abilities that proc based and are very unique class based abilities, and are flashy and fun to watch when activated, ruined at endgame by a certain skill called Nihil that prevent the usage of the skills, and in the end having Nihil is the most optimal strategy, which took away lots of fun from the game, it just reminded me of this because Nihil is basically Haki that nulify Procc based Skills which are similar to Devil fruits.

I think Haki was best used pre-time skip as someone that grew up with one Piece it has made the most of the newer fights creatively bankrupt when there already existed powers that were not devil fruits. We also shouldn't forget how little kairosekei has been used which was a missed opportunity especially for characters like Usopp and Nami who rely on tools and gadgets for combat. Haki isn't a bad thing as its always been there but Haki is meant to represent ambition and the dreams of the straw hats are all dreams with high ambition. Meaning the use of haki is not only skeptical at times but stuff like colors armament has rendered certain devil fruits useless. Alvida finally obtained an interesting parmecia which could be surpassed with certain attacks only to become completely useless at this point as anyone with haki can go straight through her defensive devil fruit. Great video regardless as its a fair look at both sides of the argument.

Yep. This. Exactly this. Pre-time skip fights allowed for much more creativity. Someone like Usopp could take on any fruit user so long as he had a creative and intelligent way to counter their powers. But these days haki is a requirement to fight. If your opponent has it and you don't, you lose. It's far too simple in my opinion and isn't flexible enough to respond to a wide array of needs. You can effectively do three things. Hit harder, look better and exert your will.

I still think you make good points in the defense of haki that can't be ignored. As for Usopp a lot of fans including myself were hoping he gets a kairosekei power up for his weapons since they are in Wano right now. Luffy's creativity with his devil fruit always amazed me and how he would use his surrounding to his advantage, against opponents who had the upper hand. Nothing wrong with a good old slug fest there is a reason why shows like DBZ are so popular. However to me it just isn't One piece anymore without that creativity. Usopp has a ton of potential. I was always hoping that he'd use more dial technology as well like he did in his fight against Luffy. Maybe even go on to create his own form of dials. He's a phenomenal engineer, I mean he built the clima tact so why can't he ever make himself anything more than a glorified slingshot? Ahh...what can you do. And you're very welcome! Haki could potentially do more. Such as uniquely enhancing Devil Fruit abilities. The Kilo-Kilo Fruit could use the "Shockwave" of Armament Haki to increase the weight of their surroundings rather than themself. Observation could boost the Glare-Glare Fruit into seeing farther into the future than is otherwise possible. Conqueror's Haki could(maybe it does) boost the power of Big Mom's Soul-Soul Fruit into enhancing the attributes of her Homies.

the thing that bugs me about haki is how armament haki and armament hardening became one thing for some reason. when first shown armament haki was described as invisible armor, now it's literally the opposite. i love the concept of hardening as an advanced technique like katakuri's foresight but now any jabroni can do it. also what's up with haki being able to produce elemental effects? why has it not been definitively stated you can make fire with haki?
