"Getting tough on crime" is an often repeated soundbite to give the impression that being tough on criminals will reduce crime. Putting people into prison is the US approach and yet it has much worse crime statistics than the supposed 'woke' countries that focus on addressing the causes of crime. We already incarcerate twice as many as the OECD average and it has never worked. I believe that most of our prisoners have been failed by our social support systems and our growing social inequities. Perhaps if all our children were brought up in secure homes with parents who can earn living wages crime would drop. The almost $1 billion a year being gifted to landlords will have minimum impacts on addressing any of those. Money is handed out for the already rich and we put the struggling poor in prison. This government does have tough financial choices and they invariably choose to support the wealthy first. As usual, Mitchell is rejecting evidence and advice and relying on is his own gut feelings, Donald Trump has the same the approach.

I didn't see anything in the clip that bothered me. To the contrary, they were 1- saving petrol by travelling in low cost vehicles 2- being supportive and respectful people by supporting the family of the deceased 3- they are very open- everyone knows who they are. Most people who commit crimes creep around devastating lives and traumatizing people. You wouldn't know who they were or what they were up to. They can be churchgoers, teachers, neighbours, members of parliament, or anyone. None of the drug dealers I have known of, none of the sex abusers, and none of the wife abusers have been in gangs. The wife beaters seem to be especially good to outsiders, sex abusers can be found in churches and wherever children go, and drug dealers are usually just up or down the road or just around the corner. Tax evaders are in the best parts of town. If I knew that leaders, who were responsible for supporting me, and running the country were out to get me or my mate's or my family, for any reason- I would be very defiant. I would do whatever I could to make things difficult for them. I wish I could start up my own gang. It would be comprised of other grandmothers, nurses, and people who care about their fellow human beings. They would oppose racism, destruction of the environment, cruelty towards workers, anyone benefitting from the sale of cigarettes, anyone who disrespects our ancestors. Alo the greedy, selfish, deceitful, and exploitative people (including almost every member of the Coalition government). All my friends and every member of my family are in this category- my partner, siblings and children. If I had my own gang, I would be very interested to know if I would be arrested whenever we meet up - and whether or not our garments are removed. I am very defiant against a gang of thugs who have lied to get ahead, have amassed a lot of money from the poor over the years, and who gave run amuck...simply because they can. This is how wars start. People join one side or another. Well done Luxon and Co...great negotiator...you and your thugs are creeping around behind the scenes... all those companies, all those rich people, and...

Jack, gangs will always try to use jail as a recruiting mechanism because they are surrounded by a bunch of criminals. Mark is exactly right though. If you make it really tough and miserable to be a gang member, it will be harder for gangs to convince people to join them because there is no merit. Gang life is just not worth the risk of getting heavily punished when caught. Soft on hand is what gives a gang life a merit. You get instant reward (fun, money, feeling powerful, etc) by joining a gang, and even if you get caught, you just get a slap on the wrist. You are out in no time and back to your gang life. That makes gang life very attractive. If you hear that your gang neighbour or uncle went to jail 20 years ago for criminal activities and that person is still never to be seen, joining a gang won’t sound very attractive to you. That’s how you deter people from engaging in criminal activities. Punishment has to be much bigger than the reward.

Mitchell needs to go back to leftist agenda interview school….he needs to outsmart the lefty agenda interviewer….too much time on defense…needs to attack and talk over Jack like Jack does to him

As far as law and order goes for this government they are doing a better job than the previous government and understandable with the debt that was left to them makes it harder however the tax cuts to Landlords supposably to stop rents going up is highly unlikely. Landlords can put their rents up whenever they want to. 2.9 billion could have been spent better elsewhere.
