If you have been following my series on this car then you’ll already know I bought my 1984 Ford Capri 2.8 Injection just a few weeks ago at a local motor trade car auction. I bought the Capri having not seen it but in the knowledge it needs a bit of work, albeit a running, MOT’d and presentable classic Ford. During the drive home it became clear the Capri ran well but a little warm - it hadn't ever overheated but I found myself watching the temperature gauge whenever driving it. I’ve changed the viscous coupling, viscous fan, thermostat and coolant, and it is now time to take the Capri on its first long drive!
So, what will come first the end of my trouble free motoring in my near 40 year old Capri or... the end of the country? In this video I attempt to drive my Capri to Land's End… will I make it? During the drive I’ll update you on the latest round of jobs I have done on the car and, because my support vehicle on this trip is a Ford Mustang 5.0ltr V8, we’ll find out which is better on fuel… a modern V8 or a modern classic V6?
If you enjoy this drive through Cornwall then please check out me driving my MG ZT260 4.6ltr V8 all the way around Cornwall, sticking to the coast road and stopping at 20 iconic Cornish locations:
• Kernow300 Day 1: • 300 Miles Around Cornw...
• Kernow300 Day 2: • Kernow300 Day 2 - 300 ...
Thanks for watching - please subscribe to follow progress with my Capri and the other cars in the collection, click ‘Like’ and do leave me a comment with your thoughts on the Capri.

The Capri 2.8 Injection always did have a nice exhaust burble and the Mustang will be constricted by modern emission and noise regulations, but yes... I do agree! 😎

Great Capri memory jerker that for those of us that drove them for a living. I had every confidence it would make the journey walk in the park for it. ( True story alert ) one of our guys picked one up from the Police garage that had been in for a faulty fan, he responded to a job requiring an emergency run, when he arrived he noticed the temp was up and an ‘ orrible smell. Lifted the bonnet to find the plastic fan had become detached and had melted like cheese over the engine, gently shut the bonnet to get transport to turn out and pick it up on a tow truck.

I love your drives,, Im the same always listening always aware of the revs and match up speed,, My Focus cost me only 550 Euros and i changed the water-pump and fan belt, new Oil with Oil " additive".. its now after 4 years been all over Ireland without a hitch .. 149,000 miles now after 19 years its still going great.. just saying its a future classic.

I bought my red 2.8i in August 1991. I drove my capri through the night setting off at 11pm and did 345 miles arrive near to Perranporth. During the holiday in May 2013 I stopped off at lands end. I had a tent and a cycle in the back. During the holiday 7 different people came over to ask about the car and some used to have one. My car made it there and back no problem.

A nice post, glad the Capri won. In the USA of course the Mustang was always king. In the late 70s Mercury brought in some Capris and they were hated, having that small 3.0 V6 Cologne engine vs a V8. IF Ford USA had engineered a V8 in the Cologne body shell, it may have got traction , but they defended the weak Mustangs with ugly bodies post 1980s. Ford wanted to protect its Mustangs and so .. death to the better looking Capri MkII and MkIIIs. Great video and congratulations to the Mustang driver on not veering off into a hedge as many Mustangs since.

They were most definitely not "HATED" and actually sold quite well. The buyers of the Capri were not interested in the Mustang and vice versa for the Mustang buyer. The Capri buyer was interested in a sporty good handling European vehicle with good performance and economy and the Mustang buyer wanted straight-line speed and the ability to tailor their vehicle to their exact specifications via the option sheet. The reason the European Capri was discontinued in the United States why is because the Deutsche Mark why is increasing in value against the dollar and eroded any profit.

A great trip in great cars. I used to drive that busy section of the A30 in my lorry and cursed the single carriageway and not being able to overtake tractors. It'll be great when it's all dual. :) Anyway, that mpg. I thought the 'stang might edge it too but, it's good to know that the 40 year old ECU in the Capri was doing it's stuff so efficiently. I guess that a carb version would probably have been a lot thirstier. Congrats on the 10,000 subs too. :)

There is no ECU it's got an electronic dizzy and standard coil and Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection that simply balanced fuel to airflow with a tapered needle not a dissimilar concept to an SU carb. No sensors, even the 'choke' was a bi-metallic mechanical device that metered a bit more fuel and air to be fed. There was a control box for the electronic dizzy but that's all.

A great video and good memory lane stuff of queuing usually near Exeter as a teenager with mum and dad on our way to Bude. As a Ford man you do a great job of making me happy and remind me to get my sorn 02 Focus Tdci back on the road. The video was great, when we visited Cornwall starting in 83 all the journeys were in warm Fords, 83 was my parents Sunburst red XR3i, same in 84, a return in 86 with a black D plate 3i followed by 88 and a black Sapphire GLS with saff cos boot spoiler at my behest! Our final visit was in dad's Radiant red G plate Escort RS Turbo series 2. I've never been back down since, the Ford love affair continued with my own escorts, dad's last a 95 RS2000 4x4. I've discussed 3.0litre capris recently with Jack aka number 27, there's some debate which is the most torquiest the Essex or cologne, either way the Capri and your others are lovely. Congratulations on 10k it won't be long before it's 25k. Best wishes. Ben

Thanks for the comment Ben and apologies for the delayed reply - it is great to know the video brought back some fond memories. Looks to me your Dad had some wicked cars; must have been cool to have all those desirable Fords as family cars. Nice also that you had a Sierra GLS - I hope you have seen my video on the GLS here on my Channel? Thanks for watching and hope to hear from you on some of my other videos.

Being from America, those measured gallons are Imperial gallons. Correct? I thought the MPG seemed a little exaggerated(to the American consumer). Adjusted to U.S. gallons. The Capri achieved 25.2mpg, while the Mustang did 20.3mpg. My personal 2009 Mustang GT 4.6L gets roughly 21-22mpg on the open road(highway or freeway out here). Back in 1985, I owned a Federal market(North America) version of the European Capri. It was a 1973 German built 2600 V6 with a manual 4 speed transmission. Being a broke college student back in 1985, I had to drive from Los Angeles(where I was attending college) to San Diego(where my family lived) on only 5 gallons of fuel. I made the 127 mile trek on 4.5 gallons for an average of 28.2mpg. I did drive at the then national highway speed limit of 55mph the entire trip for fear of running out of fuel. Considering the lack of an overdrive transmission, being carbureted, and with a points ignition system, the old gal did tremendously IMO!

Thanks for the comment... I am not sure if the Mustang is just massive or the Capri is small in comparison to modern cars?! 🤷‍♂️ It's probably a bit of both. Thanks for watching.

I've owned an 'A' plate 1984 Injection for nigh on 29 years. I've enlarged the engine to 3000cc Kent fast road cam, stage 1 heads, fitted a 230 Bhp Turbo Technics system- gross output is 285-290 Bhp 300 lbs ft of torque at 3,500 rpm. Mpg on a motorway run? 30 mpg all day. Great video overall. Love the Mustang- but it's TOO bulky and corpulent. Note how like all modern cars, it has tall slab sides- high waist line- dictated by NCAP safety dogma- it means the car looks heavy on the road. Also, if you watch the footage of the Capri following the Stang on the B road, whilst the Capri is easy to place on the road, the Stang regularly goes over the white dividing lines into the opposing lane! Modern cars are too big and bulky, but the public have been conditioned into accepting it. 5.0 V8 or not, I bet my 290 Bhp Capri would leave it for dead on a twisty A or B road- too much weight and bulk in it. The Capri is svelte by comparison.

Thanks for the comment and sharing details of your Capri, which sounds awesome! Agree that modern cars, particularly the really large stuff is difficult to place on the road and less engaging to drive as a result. Thanks for watching, it is great to know you enjoyed the video. 👍

Thanks for the comment Ben. Whilst I prefer the 7-spoke alloys, you are quite right that the Capri deserves its original Pepperpots (and black grilles) at some point in the future. Stay tuned as I will feature it all here on KZbin. Thanks for watching.

The Capri is looking good! Have you considered replacing the fan itself? They can disintegrate (on other makes) and make quite a mess. I replaced a twenty year-old 100k fan to be on the safe side. Just a thought...

The consumption figures didnt surprise me in the least.modern cars have just got to big and heavy.capri looked and sounded great, but then again so did the mustang.its to big tho.i assume the mustang exhaust is partially manufactured to where the capri is natural.enjoyed that, its bin about 20 years since i last went to lands end and that was in my xj40 daimler 4.0 litre.its a good 300 plus miles for me tho i would think lol.

I almost bought my cousin's Capri RS 5 speed when I was a teenager. Deal fell through when he found frame rust, unfortunately. That was the U.S. version. Gotta say it pales in comparison to the much prettier UK version!

Great channel. I get my weekly dose of nostalgia here and I love all the cars. I always wanted a 2.8i Capri when I started driving in the 80s but couldn't afford one back then. I've always been a Ford fan and had a S2 RS Turbo in the early 90s and a Focus ST (Volvo 5 cylinder) in 2010. Keep the videos coming as I always look forward to them. They make me want to scratch that 80s nostalgia itch but I wouldn't know which car I would buy as there are so many cars from that era that I love. I was on holiday in Saltash in May and had a week of terrific weather. Last time I was in Cornwall was when the kids were young and the poor village of Boscastle was flooded (2004 I think). I'd love something I could use as a daily driver (maybe a Mk1 Fiesta XR2 or Mk3 Escort XR3i).

Thanks for the comment, great to know you like the car. If you mean the Capri, then it all depends on your budget! I am a big believer in buying privately, so Capri owners clubs, groups and forums are a good place to start. Otherwise, it's the usual places - eBay, Autotrader, PistonHeads, Car&Classic, etc. Good luck with your search and thanks for watching.

Do like a Capri❤ The car I always promised myself and ordered one in 1980 Then my boss said it's time you had a company car, go cancel your Capri and tell them to order a Cortina for you and charge it to us. Decisions. Cortina was 👍 But still never had a Capri😢 Or even a Caprigeeagh 😂

Hello from Burry Port, 15 miles west of Swansea. You may already know, but if you don't, are you aware that both BP and Texaco E5 actually contain no ethanol at all ? My motorbike on tank stickers show that I could use E10 if I so wish but I prefer to use quality fuels. I tend to alternate between cheaper diesel and the pricier stuff for the Peugeot 306 TD though. My car road tax is due on August 1st and has jumped by £30 to £325 this year. Yours is free, Jammy !
