I interned as a manufacturing engineer at a company that made evacuation slides for airplanes. We used a strip of material on the inside of the seams, essentially like seam tape. That allowed us to make curved objects and still have a flat seam.
@jamesevans16015 ай бұрын
Likewise, I used to work for a manufacturer of helicopter floats, the larger panels of material overlapped each other, but the seam tape was adhered on the outside.

My family used to be in the vinyl manufacturing business making inflatable medical equipment. The industry standard for this process is called RF welding (radio frequency or high frequency welding). The thermoplastics were sandwiched on a die/press, and high frequency waves would pass through the die for a few seconds which would essentially friction weld the plastic seams. Usually a knife edge was implemented in the die to trim the seams in the same operation.

Its funny you mentioned dry bags, because that was actually how I learned how to do a lot of this. They sell kits online to make your own dry bag similar to what we use when running rivers and such. You basically make a tube, and then add buckles to the top/side so you create a roll top. That's what most commercial dry bags use and its a very effective method. Nice video!
@SlickPickle885 ай бұрын
So i work in swimming pool vinyl liner manufacturing and i would assume that pool toys are made in a similar way as the liners, though a thinner sheet of vinyl. Liners are made from PVC Vinyl and are actually sealed together with either radio frequency welder or hot air. For RF, think of a narrow bar of metal that the vinyl sheets gets smashed between and has the RF shot between them to bond the vinyl. Hot air is similar to the flat iron method, its just a pressure wheel following a hot air nozzle, so you can follow shapes pretty easily.

I haven't tried ironing vinyl, but i it works well with TPU backed fabric. I ordered a kit from a company called DIY packrafts, and they are half way between a whitewater raft and kayak. From what I saw 120-480d ripstop or Oxford fabric like cordura is used, but thicker would work as well. These are often used for tents or backpacks, and be found at online outdoor fabric retailers such as ripstop by the roll in a variety of colors.

I used to work for a manufacturer of helicopter floats. This is impressive work! Advice: Since you have multiple valves left, consider a multi-chambered floaty for when you need to stay afloat longer, say for like a pontoon, kayak, or canoe. When preparing your mouth valve, you can cut out two discs of vinyl (larger than the mouth valve and with holes in the center to allow airflow) and sandwich the valve between them to strengthen that area and improve the seal. Context/Mumbo Jumbo: We used panels of polyurethane coated nylon scrim and bonded those panels together with a urethane cement. Curling and shrinking of the materials was a fact of life, especially once coated with cement. Funny enough, everything was built inside to outside, but never inside-out. The main body panels overlapped each other, then strips were applied to the outside that further seal ed those seams. Another big difference were the prebuilt bulkheads that were painstakingly installed before the outer body was sealed together. If you built an inflatable with polyurethane coated fabric, there are marine paints intended for inflatable dinghies that may be suitable. It is possible to incorporate sewing if using a coated polyurethane fabric, say for straps and handles.

As a more robust seam maybe, would a 1.5” seam allowance that you glue as you were doing, then fold in half over itself and reglue under clamping - like you were doing on the last edge after folding inside out, give you a more secure bond? And add strain relief on the adhesive seal under load? Bit expensive in terms of adhesive and extra material for the seam allowance? Maybe less effective, but I imagine you could use scrap offcuts to kind of taco over the seam at wrinkle points? I think if you were ok with storage being more space consuming - you could also experiment with more aggressively robust/over built designs with floating foam - either crumbling up pieces of a pool noodle, or a pool noodle as a spine? Maybe oppositional captive loops of off-cut strapping type pieces vinyl on the inside to align it yo the centre when inflated? Maybe a towed or powered inflatables that might need a ruggedised skin around the bladder and pool noodle interior? You get interesting next iteration options then - like adding a towing eye and figuring out how to make that sustain towing safely. Maybe a spliced eye of rope that use as a guide when making the towing eye around it - then rated rope spliced or otherwise fixed onto the rope to make a rebar style mesh - again with the oppositional loops of vinyl strapping inside the bladder to distribute load? Or figuring out how to add grip handles for people riding the inflatable. Adding cup holders would also be a pretty rad next iteration. And maybe less ambitious 😅

great project! if you find yourself working on vinyl as a fabric a again, from a Theatre major studying costume design: Rit Dye for synthetic materials works on vinyl (but i would definitely swatch test, who knows how those chemicals might react depending on slight variations in composition of your specific vinyl), For seams that require vinyl cement over hot-melt: i would consider a flat felled seam- there are better tutorials online than i can describe in a comment, but the seam ends up looking something like ₪, or for curved seams I would try cutting notches into your seam allowance, this is tricky though since you’re reducing surface area for the cement, but the reduced bulk should help with the ripples that were causing pinhole air leaks.

@PearlJam2k65 ай бұрын
A potentially easier to shape to work and do a...well..2nd test with, would be a piece of toast. There reason behind that is that you have the "vertical" height of the bread, the crust essentially, that will hold better seam pressure since its in 3 parts (so like bottom face, crust and top face) instead of 2 like the dawg'. Plus you can make cute "butter slice" pillows for it.

I've seen pool floaties now that are just filled with styrofoam balls. You know like the 1/8"-1/4" dia ones they put in beans bags. Would seem easier to cut some fabric to a certain shape, sew it, and fill the thing up with Styro-balls. Even if you don't know how to sew, a guy of your aptitude could easily learn. Plus then you can incorporate things like netting (between the buns) that sags down and lets you at least touch the water.
