They need to change the rules on non uk nationals on voting. The fact that a person like me has been living in the uk since the age of 4 (now 38), attended all the schools, pay taxes and have a family and still cannot vote, is a joke.

If I, as a risk management professional in industry, proposed a solution so disproportionate to the risk faced as this, it would be laughed out before even reaching a memo.

A: Convictions is a poor measure of how much of a problem it is. How do you know it’s not rife and people just aren’t getting caught? B: Being proactive instead of reactive is a much better approach. A risk, as I’m sure you’re aware, is the risk that something ‘might happen’, otherwise it would be an issue. So surly you’re not using number of convictions as a measure of probability?

Yeah. Sure. Because who would have any interest in rigging elections or cheating. Requiring photo ID for electiins is _common sense_ and if you, as a _risk manager_ of all things, thought it is disproportionate, I'd have you fired for gross incompetence. Good grief, hearing this makes me glad I live in South Africa. Our electoral system seems to be lightyears more advanced than that of the UK and US.

So let's get this straight, there a 2 million people without eligible IDs and single digit voter fraud convictions. In no words does that scream for the need for voter ID. In addition, why do people have to register for these IDs? If the government is going to do a program like this, it better damn well make sure it's automatically issuing IDs to every eligible voter. There's no excuse not to other than for incumbent political parties to gain further influence over the election system.

Trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist, voter fraud isn't an issue. A big issue is voter suppression and low voter turn out. Holding elections on weekdays (they should be on weekends), asking for ID etc will just reduce the amount of people involved in the democratic process which is worse for everyone.

Doesn’t exist? How do you know that? The system is so open and flawed. I have a family member that gets details from other family members (of similar age) then goes to various voting booths and votes SNP with their details. If you don’t think having the most secure voting system possible is a must there’s something wrong with you. I’d go as far as to say you’re a disgruntled Labour supporter parroting decades of disproven lies about voter ID.

@@realhawaii5o the previous government tried to introduce ID cards but the party that is now the government objected to that because people freaked out and thought the country would turn into na*i Germany with police checking people's ID all the time. Now that party is demanding we present ID to vote. It's all a bit silly. I would support introducing standardised ID cards as long as they are either free or cheap to the citizen. It would make a lot of things simpler if everyone had a card to prove who they were that would be accepted for everything. Our passports are very expensive at about £100 so people don't get one unless they actually travel abroad and people who do have one don't use it for other things in case they lost it.

This is a solution in search of a problem….that doesn’t exist. If there was statistically significant voter fraud, then I could get behind fair voter ID but it’s an obvious and transparent attempt to put up a speed bump for opposition voters. The types of ID accepted preferences oap’s yet again, they may have the time to complain but they are way over-represented in budget and every other decision in government and it’s got to a point of abuse now. Their senses have slowed down (as it will for us all) so everyone else must drive much slower to accommodate them, we’re going bankrupt because they have a triple lock that actual workers could only dream of, they get free public travel, discounted energy and countless other expensive things while the rest of the country can’t buy food due to high taxes and inflation costs. This voter Id nonsense is pandering to some old grumpy buggers and it has been seized upon by a government and twisted to serve its own purposes. I don’t trust labour after their disastrous time in power last time (devolution damn near ripping country apart, a ridiculous war, inadvertently setting Brexit in motion by not implementing a gradual right to move here like just about every other member did) but conservatives are showing zero ambition and using distasteful divide & conquer techniques straight out of America’s broken democracy. You don’t need photo ID to vote in Canada. I live there you just need to be registered on the voter’s list via voting in a previous election, filing your income taxes or paying your property taxes. Otherwise you just need to bring 2 pieces of mail indicated on a list posted by Elections Canada from the past 12 months that clearly show your name and current address. Many Renters vote this way. No Photo ID required whatsoever.

Normalised over the long term I suppose it makes sense, however most of the young don’t engage with traditional media (which is more likely to report on the voter ID requirement) to the same extent as over 65s and don’t have the same amount of free time as over 65s due to work commitments. Therefore the likelihood younger voters are aware of the voter ID requirement is less than over 65s, which is likely to skew the vote in the Tory’s favour.

I don’t have a passport, I don’t have a drivers Licence. However, what I do have is a Voters Authority Certificate that is valid at elections, is free to apply for and it took me five minutes to do so online. It was approved the following day and I got the certificate in the post the day after that. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy. Now tell me, how are voters being suppressed? It’s not like this is something that has just dropped. It has been advertised and publicised for MONTHS in advance. Voting patterns show that young people on the whole are apathetic to the voting process anyway. If people are too lazy to spend 5 minutes applying for a voting authority certificate, then this is on THEM. I seriously worry about the motives of people who want to moan about a process that makes our elections a lot more secure. It’s not voter suppression, it’s cheating suppression. How on earth is this a bad thing?
