You guys are lucky those fuel tank bracket nuts came off so easy. When I replaced the fuel tanks in my square body crew cab I had to get a wrench in between the frame and tank, in order to get the fuel tank bracket bolts and nuts off.

Can’t wait to see it with the duramax in it. Good idea for the next time you pull the tank is to point the sending units out towards the bedside and extend the hoses so when u have to pull the tank down it’ll come all the way down and not have to worry about the hoses

I worked in the govt and military and we had tons of these trucks, so definitely not rare and some were kinda beat up, fixed and kept running, but as a Chevy guy I still don't see the desire for these because unless they had a big block, even the diesels were dogs.

@@Pressedsteelcustomsllc I hear ya, but trust me, they have gotten so much harder to find. And it's the axles and chassis that make them unique. I wouldn't call them "rare" bc that's not a term I throw around lightly, but to find an original paint crew cab all stock and intact is a hard thing to do these days. Yes, I know that they were work trucks and folks used them all the time, but that's what I plan to do too. I love them! And this one is getting a newer Duramax.

Keep an eye on load proportioning valve - it is mounted on frame on passenger side by the rear end with a linkage set up . They go bad at the worst possible time . No one makes them so you just delete it and put a different brake line along the axle . I ve had a 1991 r3500 for 22 years and should have archived all the notes I've found on it asking if I would sell it.

Love those TBIs! All the benefits of fuel injection (smooth running/good mpg/longer engine life expectancy) but simple to work on. I remember my dad‘s 1989 k1500 got 20 MPG‘s highway (3.42 gears )…You sure don’t win any races though lol

Check the sensor under the distributor cap. It tells the injectors when to fire and they are known to fail randomly without warning.

So...I know its too late for this, but - I SERIOUSLY recommend removing the bed for these EFI tank issues. Especially since you gotta do both any way. If the tanks are junk, that's one thing, but realistically it's just 8 bolts n the light harness, plus tank fillers. Been there - so much easier with the bed out of the way.
