On my 2020 ORP 4runner with KDSS, I did a Bilstein 5100 lift (top perch) and 2in rear lift springs. My ORP came with the TRD PRO optional wheels which I like, but since they're only 7inches wide, I was limited to a maximum 285 width. (A lot of tire manufacturers recommend at least 7.5 inches of wheel width for 285s but it's borderline). My tire installer (America's tire) would install 285s on my wheels, but no wider. I did do a body mount chop and installed SPC UCAs because I was seriously considering 285 75r17 tires (34s). I eventually went with the 285 70r17s KO2 C rated BFGs because I was concerned about gearing and I also wanted to keep unsprung rotating weight to a minimum. Going with 34s or E rated 33s add around 10lbs per tire. Brakes and suspension work better with less unsprung weight. I also wanted the option to be able to fit a full size spare in the stock location. My understanding is 285 70r17s are about the maximum size that will fit. I've had this setup for about a year and a half, and it has worked really well. It drives and rides really well. I still had to trim the plastic from the front of the fender well with a utility knife and move the front of the fender liner, but that wasn't difficult.

The question to ask is why modifications are even necessary when this truck has been evolving for 20 years and so many people upgrade tires because the OEM tires comes from Tonka. Toyota could have easily allowed for at least a couple sizes larger.

Great video! Thank you. Ignoring size, offset, etc. how many inches/millimeters clearance is needed as you turn wheels (do you factor in say ice / snow caked on ‘rubbing’ on fenders? How do you ‘check’ articulation and clearance? In shop or on a gradual ledge? Do you go to a tire store and try things out like a prom dress!!! Thank you!

-10 offset I see, but how wide is the 17" rim? X7.5", X8", X8.5", X9"??? I know there are guys running 285-65-18 (32.6") BFG KDM3s on 18X9 +0 offset (Typical bottom front bumper trimming & fender well liner 2" slide Forward, NO BMC NEEDED & ON STOCK HEIGHT SUSPENSION!) So its basically same as 285-70-17 (32.75")... I would love to try to see some 295-65-17 (32.1") & 295-65-18 (33.1") with the right offset on a 9" rim (-8,-5, 0, or +5) I believe you can get away without doing A BMC as the 295-70-17s are 33.3" and need the BMC, no doubt... or guess again! kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4m1o4ehZ7aIbKc

@jasonalmeida4356 Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't a better tire size be 275-70-17 ? All this cutting , chopping, and fine adjusting to try and get 285s to barely fit for street driving. As soon as its off-road with some articulation it seems like there will be major problems. Isn't the idea to have lots of unhindered suspension movement with lots of articulation ? not barely fitting tires that cant get a sheet of paper between the tire and the fender ?!

Thinking you might not need body mount chop if the 5100’s are adjusted to provide more lift. Possibly?
@trailrunnah888610 ай бұрын
The lift doesn't really fit bigger tires. Even with more lift, as soon as the suspension flexes upward, the tire is going to end up in the exact same place and rub.

The lift really doesn't matter. It all depends on your alignment in your wheel specs. There's a lot of videos on here that do a good job of explaining IFS, check out Tinkerer's Adventures for some great technical info on Toyota IFS.
