Sacrificing his friends and preying on Dani's weakness to get her to break things off with Christian were pretty awful, but keep in mind that Pelle was/is considered the hero to this story to the people of his village,, he even said so in another interview, but Americans view him as the villain. His purpose to what he did was never intended to be crucially evil or for his pleasure. This was the community's way of healing themselves and especially Dani who they all believed to be destined to be there. I'm not trying to justify murder but he truly believed that what he did was good and the best for Dani (which in a twisted and sinister way, is true).
