Will RMC Wildcat Be The FINAL Ibox Conversion? | The Future of RMC

RMC has been one of the hottest manufactures throughout the past 11 years or so, and they have achieved this by creating some very unique and thrilling models over the years. One of their specialties has been converting old, rough, or boring wooden coasters into hybrids using their steel Ibox track. However, with competition to renovate old wooden coasters increasing, the pandemic, and RMC putting a larger focus into some of their other models, RMC has much less of a market for these conversions compared to what it used to be. This has led me to believe that we could be in the final chapter of this model, and RMC will begin to work more on some of their newer models.

Both RMC and GCI were fighting over the Wildcat and GCI lost (mentioned that they felt disappointed in a social media post). This tells me that RMC is still very much in the conversion game, their work is still the most desirable in the field and that they might actually be seeking out particularly challenging projects (I love Wildcat, it was my first big-girl ride, but when a coaster starts to double as a cocktail shaker you got a problem) HOWEVER, i do feel that this indicates that RMC will be becoming more choosy with what they convert and we may see less conversions as time goes on. I disagree with the idea that the conversions RMC has done are not allowing for creativity within the company as I believe that 'limitations breed creativity'. The challenge of elevating an older ride while still keeping true to its original experience and staying within its footprint is creatively stimulating in a way that total creative freedom is not. Even if this is the last RMC conversion Im super grateful that its a ride that i love.

I think that the RMC hybrid conversions may be falling off but I don't think we're finished seeing them. I think they will, as you suggest, slow down significantly (since much of the low-hanging fruit has been plucked), but I think there's still enough potential demand that we could see them continue to happen for years to come. That's especially true if Cedar Fair and RMC manage to patch things up with each other (there's apparently some strain in relations between the two companies surrounding the coasters built/converted by RMC for the 2018 season), and if RMC can work something out with the Canadian government to work there (this is an obstacle that has prevented them from working their magic on the coasters at Canada's Wonderland and La Ronde). Final chapter for RMC conversions? I think no, but that also we're past the middle of the book now.

They will probably always offer conversions, but also there are only so many coasters that will need to be converted or would be good candidates for it. I think probably Hurler and Roar will get it. I wouldn't be surprised if RMC built more ground up hybrids.

You're right I think the conversions are in the final stretch at least in the US. Wildcat, the other Wildcat at Lake Compounce, Roar, Hurler, and American Eagle come to mind. The remaining woodies are either classics and still ride well or they're still okay at least for now. Their ground ups aren't excessively expensive so they seem to be pretty obtainable for any park that wants one. I think any park that wants one should either do the conversion or get one because it's a no-brainer. They're really great rides and for the price you can't beat an RMC.

@MattMcIrvin
@MattMcIrvin Жыл бұрын
The Compounce Wildcat seems like a good candidate for Titan Track, or a similar low-key refurbishment--it's theoretically the kind of ride that should be treated respectfully as a historic landmark, but it's almost unrideable. If they can't fix it with a conventional retracking (and they've tried), a partial or complete steel conversion that respects the original layout could work. I've seen some enthusiasts gush about RMCing Boulder Dash, but it doesn't seem sensible to do that to a ride that is still basically sound and that is one of the world's most unique woodies.
@oblivieon1567
@oblivieon1567 Жыл бұрын
@@MattMcIrvin I'm not one to keep something just because it's old. It's one thing if it's like the Santa Cruz Big Dipper or Lagoon's Roller Coaster which were built in the 20's and still ride really well. Even Comet at Hershey is fine. But If it's bad it's just bad. I know they've tried but it didn't work. I don't know if it's the layout or it needs reprofiling or maybe Titan Track could help it. But if they RMC it dang they'd have a winner on their hands!

Honestly I would like an Australian park to do a variation on the Iron Horse conversion. Build a resurrection of the Bush Beast from Wonderland Sydney as an RMC. With the nearest RMC being in Japan, it would work well down here with the closest comparisons being probably Leviathan. But I would probably compare the model to the B&M invert. Not often built, but can still pop up time to time. Who knows, maybe Le Monstre may be the Grona Lund Monster of RMC’s

@@amusementscape Also, I seriously hope not. RMC is my favorite coaster manufacturer out there, but that doesn't mean they don't have a model that I'm tired of seeing. Lookin' at you, Single-Rails. Suddenly more and more parks are interested in buying those rather than RMC I-Box Conversions. Which is one of the reasons why I wish the RMC Raptor stops getting purchased. RMC really ISN'T running out of coasters to get the RMC treatment, but sure, GCI MAY have something to say about that. Especially because the former is most likely converting the latter's first coaster. But I sure hope RMC finds more that they can do.

I think with the headache Gene Staples is going through getting I B Looping refurbished, he may look to RMC in the future. Maybe starting with a Raptor for Niagara Falls which would put immediate pressure on SF Darien Lake. I believe Hell Cat is back up and running with pretty extensive retracking do to it’s extensive downtime, but could easily be a future candidate. Let’s not forget Hoosier Hurricane. It's going to take them time to rebuild funds to be able to afford to do things like this again at such high paces. The industry is and will experience a temporary lull. I bet this is the end of a generation of hybrid conversions. Some big parks are happy with full replacements and all size parks are just sticking with their wooden rides for now. It could mean the last IBox though, if another track (maybe one with brakes that don't fail) by RMC is manufactured. Flat rides and coasters in empty space are next for Six Flags parks, but those can't last forever and people who go often that hate the conversions more than a removal are a minority.
