When we were kids my cousin Pam had told me that she had seen the "Nightmare on My Street" video on tv. I was so jealous, because I had never managed to catch it. The spider motif in Wild Wild West was producer Jon Peters' obsession with spiders and wanting a giant spider in Burton's Superman Lives. When that film didn't happen, Peters forced the giant spider idea into WWW (which Peters produced with his own production company), according to Kevin Smith.

I'm stunned you guys didn't mention the Kevin Smith Superman/John Peters story. It explains the spider motif in Wild Wild West. Long story short, while Smith was writing a doomed Superman sequel, producer John Peters insisted over and over that he put in Superman fighting a giant spider as an homage to King Kong. Smith tried making it work, but the project eventually shifted to Tim Burton and fell through. Two years later, Smith saw Wild Wild West, produced by Peters, and was shocked by the giant mechanical spider.
