Great viewpoint man, I totally agree. I think we have waited awhile for the a7IV and despite the price increase, I voiced my complaint about the crop 4k60. All I heard back was backfire from people who blindly defended the brand. I think we as customers deserve it.

With a 4k crop Sony saying loud and clear that it’s camera for photographers rather than hybrid! There is no overheating issue or slow process, it’s just a stupid move from Sony!

I feel that the issue with crop was done to not take away sales from A7SIII, but the camera might be able to shoot without crop. I remember back in the day people hacked Canon cameras, I haven’t heard anything on that department with mirrorless cameras. Perhaps there are hackers that stilldo that, but I haven’t heard about it.

I can't imagine how on earth sales of A7SIII could be affected as it offers far more in terms of video specific things ( for example 120fps in 4K). The only thing the Crop in A7IV did is pushed considerably a lot of people to choose Canon Eos R5 or Lumix S series cameras etc. If I was marketing guy at Sony, I would rather have more people in FE mount rather than bleed clients to competitors. In the end they did not cannibalize sales of A7S III, they did cannibalize sales for entire FE collection of products.

I just appreciate your long take video without any interruption cut! But I think the other way. I do think they have to give this camera 4k60 fullframe to keep it attractive in the market with other rivals. And honestly technically it is doable for sure. It was just a cripple hammer they used to save more sells for A7siii and A1 bodies. When they sold enough and their next generation was ready to release they rebate those bodies and give a magic firmware update to a7iv to add this and maybe even 120 4k or 240 FHD in crop mode only. This processor is capable of that and the sensor is fast enough in crop mode.

If the a7IV had FF 4k60p, it would be a camera that wedding shooters would buy two or more of. As it is now, the camera has an obvious short coming that makes it feel like a Canon cripple-hammer move. We’ll give you 4k/60 but it’s cripple-cropped. And I don’t like that. Make the FF 4k/60p possible, even if it’s only in XAVC S and not XAVC S-I. We can live with that option to save the need to switch lenses on the fly. FF-XAVC S, Crop-XAVC S-I… that seems fair and doable.

Very reasonable. However, Sony decided to cheap out on the screen and not giving a battery charger so I doubt they will. They know many people will still buy this camera.

How freaking brilliant would it be to wait for the wave of purchases to settle down say 3-4 months later and then do a 4K 60 update for frame? That way they get people that were on the fence buying A7S3 to buy that camera and then when everything slows down they give us the update. Pretty freaking genius if that’s what they plan on doing.

I think the a7IV sensor isn't fast enough for full frame 4k 60. Both the a7SIII and a1 have stacked sensors which have much faster readouts. That's why they are much more expensive than the a7IV. And I'm pretty sure even the a1 is doing pixel binning or line skipping at 4K60 due to its high megapixel count. I'm not a fanboy, I just don't think Sony crippled the camera they just give as much as the tech at this price allows

I don’t think it’s an issue as such because I bought the camera knowing that’s how it was, but it could make a good camera great. I think it would suddenly get the love it deserves if they added a binned 4k 60. I’m thinking of selling mine and just keeping the SIII, I thought it would be the SIII being sold but I’m actually really happy with the 12MP stills.

It makes a good back-up for the a7siii, and can provide higher resolution when it's occasionally needed (wildlife; sports).

My understanding is that this is limited by the processor speed. So being a hardware limitation this will not be changed unless pixel binning is implemented. I also don’t think this is likely. This camera is great paired with the a7siii but falls short by itself. I also think that the amazing lens compensation will be given to the a7siii and a1 after Xmas. Only reason they haven’t yet would be motivated by sales for the a7iv. Just my 2c, thanks for sharing

I believe the A7IV shares the same processor as the A1, which has both a higher resolution sensor and 4k60 FF. It seems like the issue may be with how sensor readout is happening, and that may be a result of the differences in sensor architecture between the two.

This means that Sony clearly have done this on purpose. This is very Canon like behavior, disappointing to say the least. @@Sirfunkymonkey This isn't a matter of processing speed, the A7IV is limited by sensor readout speed. The A1's sensor is a stacked sensor like the A9 cameras which allow it paired with the 8x faster processing speed to process and readout up to 8K30p, meaning if the A7IV had a stacked sensor it would do 7K downscaled with ease and 4K 60ff 10bit. If Sony did this, all the A7siii and A1 owners would be pissed lol.

Had a shooting with the R5 - noon to late afternoon, late summer day in Austria, so yeah it was warm but no heat at all. Was shooting bursts, needed a good snapshot / group photo. R5 overheated on me all the time. And NO i didnt shoot any video at all. What i also hate it eats trough batteries so fast. Even faster with the old LP6 from a 5D IV ... Canon is still 1-2 years behind Sony tech. And the R3 proofs it (big big body to be able to include a big battery and lots of space to get rid of heat). Don´t understand why anyone who was used to the 5D III / IV would recommend the R5. Not even close to match these old bodies.

i can live with the 4k60 crop, since i am already using APS-C lenses like the SIRUI anamorphic ones. But the current overheating issue with the a7iv is not acceptable. As far as i have tested my a7iv the camera sometimes shuts down after only 25-30 minutes recording time in normal room temperature. For (semi) professional filmmaking this camera is not useable at the moment. Back to the crop. 4k60 without crop will most like make things even worse due to higher CPU-load for scaling/compression, which may be the reason why SONY did neither offer 4k60 full frame or even 4k120 with crop.

A7IV has good AF hardware & body with taller grip. I was expecting 24 MP only with 4k60. I think they will launch A9m3 with 24MP 4k120 10bit 422 since canon has R3. but again expensive than this. I guess i have to buy two A7m3 with some grip extender, 24MP is sometime more than enough for wedding photography.

Compared to the A7-III the mechanical shutter is much more quiet. It's much better so even the mechanical shutter is an upgrade from the A7-III.

I don’t think they would remove the crop unless it became a competitive imperative for them. For example, if Canon or Nikon were to release a higher performing model in the same price range as the A7iv, then Sony might have incentive to remove the crop. As it stands, and as you state in the video, Sony doesn’t have much incentive to remove it, especially as it might cannibalize sales from some of their other models.

They could possibly enable 4k60 uncropped but I agree it's extremely unlikely Sony would. It's possible their ISP chip/thermal dissipation won't allow for it - but other than that I believe Sony's product strategy is to capitalize on A7iii "prosumer" users by forcing them to upgrade to the A7siii, A7RiV (A7RV soon?) or A1. A hybrid shooter "prosumer" camera no longer exists in their lineup IMO which is what the A7iii was for its' day and age. I think the a7iV is targeted more towards the consumer/tourist with expensive tastes who likely has a basic zoom lens and won't really care too much about achieving the exact optical properties of a lens at 4k60.

This is my first full frame camera. So i've been going through the menus, setting the thing up in a room at around 24°c. And after about fifteen minutes of me fiddling around a temperature warning symbol pops up on screen. Yes the thing was a bit warm, but still i wasn't expecting that to happen.

You have to set the( auto temp off) setting to high and then this will not happen. I had this experience as well and was heart broken. It turns out from factory the temp is to sensitive on factory setting so switching to high will fix it. I have not had the problem sense

3:42 Controlling for inflation, the price is only about 10% higher than a7iii price was when it debuted. Given the chip shortage, that's actually below where it should be. $3,500 would be reasonable for the a7iv.

4k60 is a non-issue for those of us who are more into photography. I don’t see why those who use it more for video don’t simply change lenses or use a wide angle zoom to compensate. Or purchase what you need. Who of us doesn’t want more glass after all! Seems way blown out of proportion.

Open up the aperture to compensate for the DoF (assuming you're not already wide open, in which case you're SOL) and then the exposure changes. Then you'll need to either reduce ISO or increase shutter rate, or use some kind of ND, to compensate-- all of which potentially affect your image and/or take time to implement.

The 4K 60 crop is not a big deal. It is actually a good thing. I use the crop mode on my A7iii all the time in video because it is like having a different focal length lens. I have shot complete video projects using only the Sony 24mm 1.4. People couldn’t believe everything was shot with a 24mm lens.
