Trade deals always become tricky, depending on what's in the deal and more so if one size is a lot bigger than the other, because the bigger side will expect a better deal than the smaller side and usually the bigger side can afford to play the long game, basically if you look at the EU and US, look at the trade deals they get, they are usually tilted in favour of the EU or US and it really boils down to two things, economy of scale and consumer power, which basically means that a lot of countries want good trade terms with big markets like the EU and US, they know that and they take advantage of that clout to get better deals for themselves.

@Person11068as an Irish beef farmer this deal is very well known and constantly blasted for how it would destroy local agriculture. Opposition is also common among environmentalists who claim South American beef is the cause of amazons deforestation. Im from Uruguay, the reason why we are looking for bilateral agreements outside of mercosur its becuase it has been basically useless to the uruguayan economy, we have the most expensive market in the entirety of the continent and desperately need cheaper products from developed countries like China, the US and the EU. And on top of that, the mercosur is not a free trade agreement at all, brazilians put big tariffs on uruguayan and argentinian beef, milk and soy, which is basically most of our PIB, in a couple of years we will be making more money trading with the chinese, than with all the members of the mercosur combined.

In fact, Brazil produces everything that any Mercosur country needs: computers, cell phones, cars, buses, machinery, even planes, submarines and drones, Brazil produces. The problem is that it makes no sense for Brazil to sell these products in large quantities to Uruguay and Argentina, if these two do not sell the products that Brazil wants. There is no trade balance.

I'm from Brazil and I also assume that there is resistance from the industrial sector in my country against signing the agreement. We Brazil trade more with China than all mercosur combined since the beginning of 2000’s. Uruguay is a 22k gdp per capita expected to grow 3% in the next 10 years. China only buys soy and beef from your whereas we Brazil buy industrialized problems and support a lot the software industry. Not to mention the extra money you have for infrastructure. Do whatever you want Uruguay! Maybe if you weren’t buying milk from New Zealand and selling it to us we wouldn’t be putting tariffs on it.

What we should remember with the EU, the project started out shortly after the second world war, there was a lot of good will in preventing a lot of the mistakes of the past and working closer together through integration, even then, European countries have not had an easy time of things and it's takes countless decades to get where we are at. The mistakes I'm seeing with these other unions like the one in South America and the African Union is that they are rushing them together, worse yet, they are letting anyone in, regardless of status, especially the African Union, that doesn't encourage reforms and change for the members, the carrot and stick approach which the EU has been very successful with it over the decades, apart from recently with Hungary and Poland, which in the case of Hungary, the EU needs to get a lot tougher with them. I think the other problem with the South American union is Brazil, you've got one country that's massive in comparison to the others, that creates an imbalance, the EU on the other hand have a mix of big and small countries, many of which keep each other in check, in the case of the South American union, Brazil rules the show.

I personally believe the EU is missing a great opportunity to build a strong and comprehensive transatlantic partnership with LATAM, which is one of the most like-minded regions to the EU in the world. Instead of moving on from a stagnant economy dependent on costly subsidies towards a more dynamic and efficient state of affairs by collaboration with good-willing allies, they (France, Ireland) prefer to maintain some decadent sectors of their society satisfied so as to not shake the political order and the government's popularity. Good luck to the French in their delusive attempt to make Europe a respectable geopolitical player again while acting in this shameful way.

Milei leaving Mercosul would be exceedingly prejudicial for his presidency, specially at this point that. He'd have far better luck expecting Brazil to elect someone more similar to his own ideology in 2 years (which is completely possible).
@Pixelarter

I doubt it. After only one year, Lula's government is doing much better economically than the last two right wing governments (Temer and Bolsonaro). It's more probable that the better economic situation ends up electing another left leaning president in the next election. There's also a high chance Bolsonaro will soon be jailed for his crimes, and further demoralize the Brazilian right and the conservatives.

Geography. I live in southern brazil, its easier tô integrate because of the rio de la plata basin where you have the pampa biom. Colômbia and Chile are kinda away from these 4 countries due to Andes mountain range. It has more population if you account São Paulo and Buenos Aires. The rivers are navigatable and goods can move across the south atlantic too.

@nablamakabama488

It’s probably because of the close proximity and connection via the same infrastructure and bodies of water. The 4 members are all east coast countries with their population centres close together. The others are west coast and disconnected by the Andes mountains and Amazone rainforest. Paraguay is landlocked, but it’s directly upstream from Buenos Aires.

As a Brazilian that know Lula’s style of international relations, I can assure that Brazil-Argentina relations can only be damaged today by the Argentinian part. Lula don’t care much about ideological differences, a proof of this is that he had a bigger, and real friendship with Bush in the early 2000s than with Obama after 2008. And he also knows that the relations between countries shoudn’t be guided by it’s leaders personal relations, as he recongnised in a graduation of diplomats after Milei’s victory in the election.
