@monkeyslawncareandgardenin473 has gotten me excited this morning with his comment. Shout out to him for sharing this. New info that I'm VERY interested in, depending on the price of this product of course. Velocity PM is a new product that not only can target poa annua, but also poa triv! I hope the price is right for us home owners. Read more on it here: nufarm.com/usturf/product/velocity-pm/

Since the grass in my front yard was just planted in the fall, I decided to overseed and just go after the weeds once the grass is more mature. Thanks for giving the timeframe of the best time to use the herbicides for the poa.

Man, lawn care is an exercise in patience. Some of the problems can take multiple seasons to fix. You just have to stay the course as best you can. Make the best decisions you can at the time.

I am currently fighting Poa Annua in my GCI Cool Blue fescue. I have been mixing different herbicides trying to knock down the PA. Currently trying a mix of Sulfentrazone, Ethofumesate, Triclopyr4 , Drive XLR8. I also have Tenacity and Speed zone that I could add. Msg Pete from GCI and he figured the only products that might work would be Sulfentrazone and Ethofumesate. I would love to add the Xonerate product unfortunately that is too expensive. I am hoping the Velocity PM is a more reasonably priced thing to try. I have been putting so many ounces of each together into a backpack pump sprayer.
@tedallen50029 ай бұрын
I just sprayed SpeedZone late last week to try to deal with some enter weeds and white clover which came back in areas after full renovation last fall. I have lots of Poa Annua in some areas. I just pulled up a good bit of it along the edges of a deck ramp this morning. I mowed last Tuesday and bagged to get seed heads from the taller Poa Annua and took off probably close to 6 inches of some TTTF. I may try mowing again today and lowering the mower down around 2.5” to try to collect seed heads from some of the shorter Poa Annua. I think I also have Poa Triv scattered around the lawn as well…

I'm giving the Green Shoots system a try and will spot kill . The 'picking it out by hand' feels like a huge waste of time compared to other lawn tasks and early spring work I could be doing. Spot killing- maybe spend an hour or so, and maybe another follow-up, and then scalp cut and rip it out two weeks later with your dethatcher (spring time only). I did use a pre emergent in mid Sept and again in early March, but I probably didn't go heavy enough out of fear of overapplication- it seems to be working on dandelions though.

Very timely video! I'm using the passive approach of bagging up the seed heads with my mower. This is challenging since the poa annua is close to the ground and forces me to mow lower. Definitely looking for other solutions.

Good morning! I enjoyed seeing the pictures of your old lawn. I planted a portion of my back yard from scratch (baby steps) last fall and a lot of the new growth this year is that long leggy grass that I see in your pictures. I’m perplexed as to whether it’s good grass or I’m afraid it’s dallas grass. I’m tempted to pull clumps out!!😖 From the looks of your lawn now I guess it’s fescue? I planted Jonathan Green blend of rescue, blue and rye. What’s your opinion? I also used tenacity when I planted which I know doesn’t prevent dallas grass. Great video as always, thank you.

My sod wasn't put down until early November of 2023, and I realized that it was infested with poa in February. I used the green top Image and waited for it to start dying, then hand pulled around 6000 square feet of it. I have a reminder set for the last week of August to put down pre emergent.

18:52 I need help! I need a guide to what to research this summer. Currently I have a front lawn that is probably 75% poa annual and the rest is a mixture of unknown grass type and by mixture I mean multiple kinds of grass has been seeded into this lawn. Then there is the back yard which is all dirt! In spring of last year I killed the ground so to speak as it was all weeds and now I’m ready to plant grass but want to do it the current way. Please help! 🧐
@MrFergusonLawn7 ай бұрын
I was right where you are when I started in 2019 (check out the old videos, though they do kinda suck). First key step is to get on a lawn care plan. I recommend Lawn Care Nut or GCI Turf. It’s a digital download. Read that through and it will help with 90% of your questions. If you want to do fescue or a cool season grass, fall is best time to do that. For a warm season like Bermuda, it’s around now. So get the appropriate plan and start there. Hope this gets you started.

Wow. Had no idea i had to do pre emergent in the fall! Been doing it wrong. Explains my failure. The product IMAGE works good as post emergent but takes a while.
@MrFergusonLawn9 ай бұрын
You have the fall options, but if you must overseed, don't do pre emergent. It's kind of that one or the other scenario. I chose pre emergent over overseeding the past two years. This year, back to thickening up with more seed.

I tried Tenacity, it also turned my TTTF white, for a solid month, it looked worse than the Poa Annua, won't do that again. Imagine if someone were able to develop a heat / drought resistant variety of Poa Annua... it would render most other turf grasses unnecessary, no more overseeding, just plant it and it rejuvenates every year... that would be a dream grass!

Yes, absolutely one of the cons of this herbicide. One reason I rarely even apply it.

Its coming up on fall here in central VA. Can i overseed in late august / early September and then do pre emergent after the grass comes up in mid September / early Oct?
@nealwhite14749 ай бұрын
To me Poa Annua is pretty easy to control in my opinion. I had a large amount of it in my lawn years ago. I hit it with Roundup and then over seeded which took care of that problem. If it wasn't for those ugly seed heads it could be easy to ignore until it dies out in the summer. My wife often reminds me that weeds are like sin. Great vid!
@MrFergusonLawn9 ай бұрын
Haha, and yes, good point. You can go the round up route if that's what you like. Thanks Neal!

FYI, I recently viewed one of Pete's (GCI Turf) video's and he did a mix of Exonerate, Poa Constrictor & Tenacity. He said he had pretty good results with it and the Poa became crispy. However, he did not say it killed it!I It showed in the video as well. I do not remember if the application was during summer which I think would make it more effective. Weeds, always a challenge! God Bless.

To combat POA A, I went down with an app of the etho 4sc (half rate) this past fall on top of TTTF overseeding along with a granular starter fert with mesotrione. The label for the etho 4sc says you can apply at the same time as overseeding. This combination significantly suppressed the germination of my TTTF. I overseeded and applied the same granular fert with mesotrione on my neighbors yard and they experienced no delay in germination. After a couple of weeks of little to no germination I ended up renting a detacher/scarifier to break up the soil. I then raked up all the debris and the re-applied seed, which ended up resulting in less than ideal germination results and a lot of additional effort and cost. Anyone have any experience with running etho 4sc and mesotrione in the fall for TTTF and have any tips/suggestions for timing and rates?
@MrFergusonLawn8 ай бұрын
I've not went there yet, but will be doing similar apps in the fall. I know Tenacity can kill or stun fine fescues, but shouldn't hurt any tttf. Interesting.

Love your channel! Have you ever thought about taking a weed torch to the poa, and then over seed? I used round up on it before but it takes like 2.3 weeks before you can over seed. with the torch, it could be gone instantly and then thrown some seed?
