Well.. everyone doubted Tesla's ability to reach profitability and now it's getting the laggards of the much larger auto industry to innovate to catch up on the EV front. I think it's lazy reporting on FT's part to get a robotics company supplying trade fair and amusement parks to chime in advanced robotics. Yes, Elon tends to oversell his timelines but dude's execution is mostly on point. Plus he has a hugely cash flow positive business and the world's best engineers at his disposal. I seriously don't reckon having a small Cornwall based company giving insight on what is fast becoming the biggest most innovative company in the world (hint: Tesla). So much pessimism tsk tsk. You can't do it doesn't mean others cannot.....

@@Feefa99 very true. Onus is now on Tesla to prove otherwise. I also was expecting slightly more out of AI day. However, as a neutral (although one slightly rooting for innovation), my main gripe was FT not even interviewing someone from ex-Darpa or even Boston Dynamics. The correct approach is to have them Look like robots, without faces. Because we need them for labor.. Nothing else.. If we want a thinking robot or a classroom aid, we should instead focus on something similar to SIRI, CORTANA or BIGSBY .. simply a voice, maybe even something you would see on a screen.. The idea is to not waste time and resource on something unnessesary. Or give a Robot designed to be amongst children the risk of malfunctioning and using its mechanical physical strength to harm kids. But also limiting OpenAI thinking machines to a limited actions that it can perform in the real world. For example being unable to communicate with or command Physical robots. So its not able to become skynet :)

You seem to miss the point. Previously humans did most of the tedious tasks but instead of literally build a automatic human we instead just built entire automated factories that are way better than any humanoid robot could ever be, they are purpose built. The humans are mostly there for tasks with large varieties or for supervision, you would still want those even if you had a humanoid robot.

@@PhilfreezeCH You seem to have missed my point. The world is built for humans. There will always be non-specific tasks that only a humanoid can perform. That's why we still have humans in factories. you need to consider, as the one lady said, someone that can watch over the elderly all day while everyone is out. it doesn't need to carry them around, just watch over them maybe get them a drink or their dinner pills which would be already counted out in some plastic container in advance. and of course to call if they get sick or pass out, links for emergency nearby should be added to their software in case it's needed, so basically an automated person to talk to when you aren't there.

@Jonathan Loeppky yeah exactly that could fit easily. Tesla has AI specialty in the bag, and manufacturing so scaling wouldn't be an issue. The only thing we need to really see improved in these early days is how they get on with 1 walking as they haven't done this before (although this problem has been solved by other companies so easily possible) and 2 the dexterity of the movement in terms of manipulating the world around it. With this in mind I see the Tesla bot happening very easily at least at a basic level. Maybe pick up item X and place it over at place Y. That alone would have a ton of use and the platform can be improved to be more capable over the next 10, 20, 30+ years just like our smart phones develop over time. Specific use cases to start, more generalised in the future.

In the home should not be the target market. Think businesses even small businesses where this easily could replace receptionists, go-fers, and I'm thinking security services, especially overnight security. That alone, night watchman, would be huge and actually BETTER than the two humans each position now requires. This robot won't fall asleep on the job, won't drink on the job, won't do drugs on the job - that alone is huge. It has better hearing, sight (infrared?), and doesn't need a potty break or want to go on vacation.

Did you know that when one Tesla Bot learns something, it uploads the learned information to the A.I. mind cloud AKA SkyNet so that all Tesla Bots can access the new, learned information? That’s how Tesla’s A.I. works. For example, if you’re fighting back against a Tesla Bot attacking you and you’re lucky enough to destroy it, it would have uploaded information about who you are to SkyNet by the time that it’s destroyed and dozens of other Tesla Bots, which are all being operated by the same A.I. mind via SkyNet, will find you and destroy you.

Presenting a gentleman who makes "dumb" robots as an AI expert is extremely disingenuous. This comes off as a hit piece on Tesla and Elon Musk specifically. I'd like to see reporting where facts are presented instead of opinions, and actual AI experts weigh in on the subject. Otherwise, this is uninformed trash.

Automation makes everyone richer, yes. But it also sends the majority of individuals into the lower class.. The lower class rises up, but people lose prestige and purpose. When shoes are made by machines, the local cobler, no longer is viewed with respect and no longer is part of higher society. Current age automation is going to lead to disruption the likes of which we collectively can not imagine... Might want to figure out how to keep everyone from banding together and burning down entire nations to stop themselves from being made obsolete. You say "well the police would stop them", what about when the police are the ones being automated away? Hmm, I dont think peopel understand how crazy things are going to get.

Standard of living has risen so much that we can afford to worry about too high a standard of living. Individuals will still take on hobbies and they will have even more time and money to invest so I don't think we'll lose purpose. on the contrary more people can go to school and achieve higher degrees of success if they have robots working for them.

@@ogzombieblunt4626 I disagree, I think for many jobs are how they derive meaning in their life. Ive seen what happens when otherwise aimless people lose that, they drink themselves to death, or any number of things. What you're saying will be the course many people take, but many more will lose one of the only things that gave their lives meaning. My best friends dad killed himself two years ago, 3 years after having the ability to drive truck taken from him by a botched medical procedure. We are social creatures, we crave status, and people will seek it regardless of how much automation takes off. For the mass majority, the ability to achieve that status will be taken from them, many will find other things to do, but as a gaming addict... I can tell you with abosolute certainty, that that isn't always a good thing, many people NEED the structure a job provides, in order to maintain their sanity. I'm hopeful, but we really need to be willing to accept that not everyone is going to thrive, and we should find a way to help those people.

@@RealShinpin And this is why we need a negative income tax and plenty of rehab for people in that position. Once we open the opportunity through a NIT to go to college many will go, most people want to make somthing of their life and won't just sit around all day.

@@ogzombieblunt4626 There is a simple truth that people cannot wrap their heads around. Some people can't be coders, and many are not going to be able to succeed in the oncoming technological revolution.. We wont turn truckers into coders... Its just not going to happen, and most of them don't want to live that life anyways. I agree with a negative income tax, or something like that.. I don't agree with the assessment that we need to force more people into the educational system. I think we need to start valuing things differently for one... But honestly I don't know the solution to these kinds of problems. It could be the imposition of artificial work via the creation of gaming worlds where certain artificial goods require work to obtain, or any number of things..
Elon Musk offers a seductive new ability, that could split humanity.
