Mechanical engineer here. The issue isn't the potential for a higher water level. The issue is the fact that you have 6 feet of water being held back by your basement wall! As well, water has the potential for seaping into the surrounding ground, undermining your foundation. That said, there ARE ways you can mitigate such, but you haven't mentioned those aspects which is concerning. Things like a non-permiable membrane along the foundation and walls of the pond and a strengthened wall along the edge bordering the water. EDIT: WOW this blew up! Thanks! In response to frequent comments, Iet me address them In a previous video he shows he does show that he had a nonpermeable liner built in, and that the foundation was properly reinforced. My point was that he didn't address these in this video, and that created some concern. In the event someone else wanted to do a project like this, they should not think that having only a negative edge will save them, and should consider other potential pitfalls.

So, based on the current situation (as long as the waterfall doesn't get blocked up, or the pond fill up too quickly, and as long as waterflow isn't eroding his foundation quickly enough to matter), the water remains inches below the surface of the slab and the base of the actual house.

The NUMBER ONE RULE of all engineering is “everything leaks” Water is the most powerful force on the planet, and when it wants to go somewhere, it’s gonna go somewhere. Also, buddy, your negative edge won’t save your foundation if it wears away from constantly being submerged in 6 feet of water, not to mention the pressure from the width of the water. I really hope you had an engineer okay this, and that your homeowners insurance still covers you after seeing this. Water carved through Grand Canyon, and that was just a trickle. Foundation walls aren’t dams, they are meant to hold weight above, not necessarily weight side to side.

If you have 6 feet of water against your wall that’s 6 feet of hydrostatic pressure at the bottom. You can easily integrate the linear pressure distribution along the wall and calculate the force the water is applying to the wall. It’s alot of force and the foundation should be reinforced to prevent fatigue failure.

Honestly none of this matters the foundation should be able to resist the water pressure, especially with the compression force of the house helping to increase its tortion resistance, the real problem is that the concrete is porus and will absorb water over time which will make it softer and softer, plus over time molds will form in the sponge further weekending it. He probably doesn't have to worry about ice erosion or tidal erosion but he may have to deal with current erosion depending on where he put the spigot that keeps the pond filled.
@chrisb1047
@chrisb1047 10 ай бұрын
@@hermanmunster1054 the problem is that non-reinforced concrete is only strong in compression. The weight of the water acts on the concrete laterally which produces tension on the inside of the concrete wall. Since the house is providing compression to the foundation and simultaneously a lateral load is being applied to the foundation there is a risk for buckling over time. This may produce cracks in the foundation over the years which could cause damage. To your point it looks like they used insulation to prevent the water from penetrating the concrete and further weakening it. But if water were to find its way in then it could certainly assist in buckling the wall or crack propagation.

Two words: ground seepage. We’re currently dealing with this at a commercial property. Our retention pond is leaking into one of our suites, not because it overflowed, but because water started seeping though the ground into the foundation…

As a highly trained and professional home improvement contractor, i can tell you these sorts of ponds and landscaping usually leaks into the home after about 500 days at the very least.
@randysmith9636
@randysmith9636 10 ай бұрын
Why? The only way for this to leak into the house is if you have a liner fail. We have used a fiberglass tub style design before and had no issues. Even with a rubber one piece liner you should have no problems. If they are leaking after a year and a half then someone has no clue what they are doing.

this guy isnt talking if foundation would crack and flood his house. and if he doesnt have basement doesnt really have worry about flooding. foundation is different story. however the flooding he is referring to is the pond overflowing into his home and rising but like he said it stays the same level because of the waterfall

I’m pretty sure there’s something between the house and pond or else it would just corrode the house and you would have to drain the pond and make sure the seal is good enough around the window if he had did it at the beginning sure maybe he could put a window down there but at the point it is now it’ll be too much for for such little outcome you would have to keep washing that window
