Now drive the speed of light and turn your headlight on
@Ryan30z17 күн бұрын
1. You can't 2. If you're going 99% the speed of light and turn a light on, that light still moves away from you at the speed of light.
@ethanwilliams923517 күн бұрын
Ignoring the fact that we currently can't move that fast, relativity says that the light will still be moving away from you at the exact same speed that it would be for a stationary outside observer. However, to the person standing still, the light will be "shifted" to a higher or lower wavelength, depending on if you're moving towards or away from them - same concept as the Doppler effect.
@anthonyhovens748816 күн бұрын
If that doesn't make sense, don't worry. General relativity barely ever makes intuitive sense...
@s.owl916 күн бұрын
None of these explanations help me... Would the light simply move at the same speed as the vehicle therefore look like its "glued" to the headlight or would it accelerate from an initial velocity provided by the vehicle & surpass the speed of light? I think the answer is the 1st scenario
@anthonyhovens748816 күн бұрын
@@s.owl9 no, the light is going at 3x10^8m/s (c) from the perspective of everyone regardless of their own velocity. If you were in the car going 99.999% c, you would experience severe time dilation compared to a stationary observer. You would literally experience time slower so the light would still apear to move away from you at c. A stationary observer would see you going at 99.999%c and the light going at c because the are not under the same effects of time dilation. So the speed of light relative to other moving objects entirely depends on how you observe it...

@@brucer.5403 I'm sure he can, but it doesn't change the fact that what he's doing is dangerous to an extent, including to others, and that it could be easily mitigated by just having someone else drive while he leans out the window and shoots. There's a reason laws about texting and driving etc (things that may draw your attention away from the phone) exist. No need to make a big fuss out of this. I hold no ill will towards James and I'm sure @seanbrockest3888 just wanted to point out that this could be handled more safely in the future.

No, more to do with the gun which is already travelling in one direction and moving away from the ball rather than the ball from the gun.
@chrisb1047Ай бұрын
The air disturbance created by the car only affected the balls vertical drop rate due to gravity. Air resistance in the horizontal direction is minimal its actually experiencing a lift force due to the cars wake. When the gun is fired a new force gets applied which is almost exactly equal to the force necessary to instantly decelerate the ball relative to its initial velocity (the same as the cars).

This was realized by fighter jet engineers when the jets started flying faster than their bullets. An F4 ended up ingesting its own cannon rounds by catching up to them.
@xenophobicsokkorean60552 ай бұрын
It wasn’t an F4…. It was an F-11 Tiger. The pilot fired a few rounds off and dove at an angle, which allowed him to catch up to the rounds and hit himself

Damn beat me to it! Happened to Soviets as well. Yet it makes sense. One is losing energy. The other has constant thrust. At first I thought he said if he shot it forward will the ball stay in place. I'm like WTF? Hasn't anyone tossed a ball in the air while running forward? It doesn't just go straight up.

@LordFalconsword Have you got a link to an article about the F-4 incident?
@HyperShadow9494942 ай бұрын
Wrong. The bullets would be traveling at their muzzle velocity relative to the jet. The only way the jet could catch up to the bullets is if it accelerated, which is not related to this video.

the net velocity of the bullet was (velocity of bullet - velocity of car) as the bullet already had velocity of car in left and the firing velocity of bullet was in right and the air resistance was also acting on the bullet on the left side therefore after sometime the the net velocity of the bullet got null and because of the air resistance the bullet came a bit back and there was also the acc due to gravity acting downwards due to which the ball fell backwards in a parabolic path hope this explanation is correct
@aerowalker32 ай бұрын
I think you got all the factors at play totally right. Although the initial moving to the right is probably more because the car wasn’t going exactly the speed the ball is launched. Something like 54.8 mph. Stinking close, but just enough that the ball has a little extra velocity the other way. Air resistance, air flow, and gravity definitely immediately came into play after that, though. To be fair, it’s impossible to know which forces are causing the most movement when the movements here are so minute in comparison to the speed he’s traveling. It’s probably a combination of the answers.
