The difference between a trans tunnel and a dog house is the dog house is removable to work on both the engine and transmission. So a car with a solid tunnel (or even small access panels) would be a trans tunnel. A truck, van, etc that has a large section of the trans tunnel that is removable, the removable part is the dog house, but the dog house is part of the transmission tunnel.

I have always heard a trans tunnel is just for a transmission, and not normally accessible. A dog house is typically a removable cover to access an engine, or part of an engine - like in vans, motor homes, some trucks, and boats.

The dog house is in vans and RVs, you remove it to reach the back of the engine and trans. In a vehicle that has an engine completely accessible from under the hood the hump inside the vehicle is called the transmission tunnel and generally it is non removable but can be made to be removed in custom built vehicles. You have a transmission tunnel.

Im a VW fanatic and have been for about 40 years now. The dog house covers the engine, but I've always understood it to be universal with regard to engine or transmission/ transaxle cover. On any vehicle... Great build, guys!

Rudy you should get some Kevlar material and cover the under side of the transmission/transfer case tunnel, because if you throw a driveshaft or scatter the transmission or transfer case that sheet metal is not going to give you much protection. Just my thoughts. Would hate to see you get hurt.

Doghouses are actually removable cowlings that you will find in vans and r/v's and such where the best way to get to the engine is to remove the doghouse. OK... So after watching a little further I see that you have made it all removable. So now I would officially consider it a trans tunnel doubling as a doghouse. You kinda created both there sir. Excellent job btw.

HMMWVs we call them doghouses. We use the term when it’s been removable. We even use the term when there’s not an engine or trans underneath the doghouse. For example the older HEMTT inside the doghouse was the electrical and blower motor and was still referred to as the doghouse

I think the term "dog house" more commonly refers to the engine cover for vehicles that had the motor mounted between the front seats, such as the classic vans of days gone by. However, considering how large that cover is going to be in the Cooper, commandeer it for your own purposes!

The "Dog House" is normally what is built over the engine area in Cabover trucks of yesteryear. My 1956 International Day-cab cabover and 1968 Mack cabover had "Dog Houses."

All rear-wheel drive vehicles tend to have a Transmission Tunnel. The Doghouse, as I have known it was more characteristic of snub-nosed vans, RVs, and trucks that have access to the Engine from within the passenger compartment. It's an additional component that could look like a pet carrier or Dog House. A trans tunnel does not allow the driver to change the air cleaner or adjust the carburetor while driving down the highway.

FYI, the Ford electric vacuum pumps on their diesel trucks are way smaller an more cost effective to purchase along with being very easy to find in a pinch. Just food for future thought for you since I went the same way you have awhile ago. Hope this helps you down the road.

First time hearing the phrase dog house. More often, tunnel, shroud, cover. That was some work with tne bead roller. The vacuum assist must have took some thinking and doingung to fabricate. This will be one unique king cooper when finished.
