For the last little while the mini Cooper has had a gaping huge hole in the floor. It’s time to solve that issue new trans tunnel and floor pans are needed. And in between taking care of the floor, we figured out how to mount the power steering pump to the engine. Thanks for watching.

A "doghouse" refers to the large cover over the back of an engine in vans, some delivery trucks and RVs. It is not used for a transmission tunnel.

If I had your abilities and fabricating problem solving skills, not to mention your attention to detail and will to come up with ingenious solutions to overcome any obstacles, I too would have to sit and marvel over what I just invented/created with just my mental and physical tools that I have at my disposal!!! the beauty of having your own shop working at 3am. I really miss not having a workspace to work on all my diversified mechanical interests. and I would love to have my own shop again. The difference between a trans tunnel and a dog house is the dog house is removable to work on both the engine and transmission. So a car with a solid tunnel (or even small access panels) would be a trans tunnel. A truck, van, etc that has a large section of the trans tunnel that is removable, the removable part is the dog house, but the dog house is part of the transmission tunnel.

Im a VW fanatic and have been for about 40 years now. The dog house covers the engine, but I've always understood it to be universal with regard to engine or transmission/ transaxle cover. On any vehicle... Great build, guys!

I have always heard a trans tunnel is just for a transmission, and not normally accessible. A dog house is typically a removable cover to access an engine, or part of an engine - like in vans, motor homes, some trucks, and boats.

Doghouse. Origin I believe came about when the concept of COE, cab over engine became a common terminology around big trucks. “ Dog House”.

HMMWVs we call them doghouses. We use the term when it’s been removable. We even use the term when there’s not an engine or trans underneath the doghouse. For example the older HEMTT inside the doghouse was the electrical and blower motor and was still referred to as the doghouse

Doghouses are actually removable cowlings that you will find in vans and r/v's and such where the best way to get to the engine is to remove the doghouse. OK... So after watching a little further I see that you have made it all removable. So now I would officially consider it a trans tunnel doubling as a doghouse. You kinda created both there sir. I think the term "dog house" more commonly refers to the engine cover for vehicles that had the motor mounted between the front seats, such as the classic vans of days gone by. However, considering how large that cover is going to be in the Cooper, commandeer it for your own purposes!

The funny thing is that in Sweden, we used to call the old Mini Cooper "DogHouse". So before you started talking about the trans-tunnel, I acctually thought you were refering to the car itself.

All rear-wheel drive vehicles tend to have a Transmission Tunnel. The Doghouse, as I have known it was more characteristic of snub-nosed vans, RVs, and trucks that have access to the Engine from within the passenger compartment. It's an additional component that could look like a pet carrier or Dog House. A trans tunnel does not allow the driver to change the air cleaner or adjust the carburetor while driving down the highway.

Technically, speaking, the term doghouse was invented in the old Flatnose van generations of the 1960s and it referred to the cover over the engine when the engine was mid front mounted, however, as they move engines forward in their vans, they continue to call the engine cover inside the doghouse. In automatic transmission Ford pickup trucks the cover over where a manual transmission stick shift would go is often referred to as the doghouse as well, but not by Ford’s official literature.

I think I've only heard the trans tunnel called the "dog house" in cab over designs like RV's and vans where the engine cover/trans tunnel is removable for service. When you took it out and laid it on the ground it looks like a dog house.

In tractor trucks, cabovers had a doghouse that sat in the middle of the cab. Old vans had a doghouse that people often confuse for a raised console and drink holder, because that often served double duty.

I've been wondering the same thing. To be fair, the term "overlanding" has become pretty generic so he could throw a rooftop tent on the rollcage and a cooler in the back and still meet the criteria, but I gotta say this build has felt the furthest from the spirit of the competition. While it'll be the most capable (it's pretty much a buggy lol), it definitely has the least potential for typical overland builds and all the content **so far** hasn't been overland related at all. I'm still loving it purely for them fab skills and maybe he'll throw in some interesting stuff that attributes to the camping/overland aspect once the main build is done.. if there's time.

@@allenpiper1935 I don’t know I think bleeping jeeps monster four-wheel-drive jaguar, which is definitely a rock crawler is more outside the spirit of the original competition. However, when Ian agreed to allow larger tires than the original original competition guidelines, after scrutiny from the contestants, I think the whole Overlanding thing got thrown out. Paul at Fabrats Initially mentioned that they were going to have to be driving these things on the street for 500 miles, in the last update that I saw regarding the rules and the spirit of the competition they had said they could actually tow them that distance to the second location. When you get a bunch of people that strictly build rock crawlers together, it’s unlikely you’re going to get an overlanding rig.

Re: Dog House. I say that you're both right actually. In the upper Midwest were I live, the part that covers the engine/trans in a full sized van, motor home or a COE semi tractor is called a dog house, but with a normal pickup truck or car we call it a trans tunnel or cover.
