Will the USA ever develop a World Class Player?

The USMNT keeps improving year over year and soccer academies in the US continue to improve with it. However what has to be done in youth development to get the USMNT to that next level?

I started playing soccer at 17, I didn't have my parents support when I was younger so I waited till I could drive, long story short, the highest level I got to play was the PDL division here in the states, I got a try out in Guatemala but wasn't able to go, Cruz Azul were willing to give me a try out but wasn't able to go due to finances, who knows how far I could of gone but money definitely stomp my growth.

This was a good discussion Tac. Thanks for bringing on Maximo’s father to share his experience. I’m navigating my own son’s development in youth soccer which is a challenge. What I learned today was to get out of the way and avoid adding undue pressure on my son.

This is great advice; I’m trying to be positive, question positively to only induce constructive, critical thinking l, and to praise and not be negatively critical and allow him and his coach to address problems and poor performance. The one thing I notice thinking back about the small club is that at a young age, there was no competition. The kids were just encouraged to play, have fun, and be creative if with the right coach. My son is behind because we moved from a small club with no real opportunities, to a big club where he wasn’t being trained, and now we are at a brand new club where training is being provided, but there is no past success in club ball to lean on. Im trying to learn and grateful for everyone sharing.

Get rid of pay for play, and start scouting in difficult neighborhoods. I don't think there has been a world class player that came from riches.

@noting76 I think USSF first needs to decide how serious they want to win a world cup, or if they are satisfied with the status quo. If they are serious about winning a world cup, they need to invest more money for scouting in lower income neighborhoods, where pick-up games happen. Those are places where you find those players that have the "it" factor

I have watched, played, refereed, and coached the game for four decades. For my son, I didn't coach his first season to see if he even liked it. When I saw he liked it, I coached him. He progressed so fast that he played a rec game two age groups above his own and had 5 goals in the first half. After that, I realized he was ready for Academy and has been playing U9 Academy, which he started playing when he was 6 years old. I take him to the park every week for free play. Sometimes, I play with him, and other times, I just let him do his thing. I try not to force anything on him, but I do believe in motivating him by taking him to games and just playing as often as he can.

Very rich discussion. Thank you. So many - talk - that have - never - developed a player - as a coach - or parent. Augusto special dude. He has developed his player - in our context - where it is maybe more likely to ruin a player - and he has some observations - about the system - that are very well thought-out. When he talks about 'practice players' he is on point. I have to finish the listen - but just that concept - that MLS Academies develop 'practice players' - sometimes people say - 'robot players' - and - not at all the fault or knock on the players - the kids are excelling in the context they exist - but - how do you get over this? I see our system and league progressing pretty fast and I believe that our country is starting to take soccer more seriously and with that happening we’re gonna dominate the world stage like we dominate the rest of the sports we take seriously

Is there a country that takes a sport seriously and isn't competitive at the world stage? For Belgium it's Soccer and cycling, we have some of the best players in both. In the Netherlands it's soccer and ice skating. Same deal. In some European countries it's basket, they have people playing in the NBA. etc. etc. I guess this applies less to be less wealthy countries but still.

Very good insight. I agree that america needs an environment that allows kids to learn and enjoy the game without structure. This is probably more of a cultural thing, but if kids play pickup games and use their imagination without any pressure they will develop skills that can not be taught. You can't coach a love for the game.

Exactly! These problems that need to be fixed are the ones that MLS, USL, and USSF can't really do too much about. These US sociological issues, not US Soccer Academy issues. The suburbs make it really hard to do pickup stuff, because you require a car to get anywhere, and these places could be 15-20 minutes away by car, which makes structured systems the most efficient way to play sports. but that keep the creativity from happening. Also, for most American parents, youth sports is mostly just a high quality Babysitting service. They drop the kids off for an hour or 2 while they leave to go do some errands. They don't play with the kids. They don't or cant make time for it. Because America, on the whole, is built to get you to work a lot for as little pay as businesses can get away with. And to get a job, you have to go to college. Which means all the sport's main goal is to get you noticed by college scouts so you can get a scholarship. Its why since the 1950's, when the suburbs and the Interstate Highways were built, baseball has been drooping. It is a sport that greatly benefited from late 19th-early 20th century urban Stickball culture. Its also why American Football, which has always relied on the college system since the beginning, was able to take the #1 spot. The only reason that Basketball didn't get too effected was because the urban basketball court infrastructure was already built by the time of white flight and it didn't require a lot of space like Baseball does. In short, until the suburb and the car are no longer in charge of the American social landscape, soccer will always have a low ceiling in this country.

There is a difference between adult college students in d1,d2,d3 educational institutes structure, and the little young kids playing young pick-up games without expecting much ridicule at the end of the day at that age which i think it was the original comments angle. The skills will follow. Lastly, the drafted adult or junior athletes in the NFL and the NBA, NHL leagues or Lacrosse, ground Hockey, or other were divided into separate leagues on separate divisional fronts of the land. Colleges decided to make money off of the scouting or recruiting in order to compete with these other top tier leagues competition wise, i.e., colleges leagues, whichever were already attracting students vise versa even overseas. Note that the Premier League too have academies and yes, im assuming that they have ctizens from overseas who travel in too. Sponsors will follow accordingly. If that wasn't the original comments take than this fault was all mine then. Good day know.

@@Londronable its hard to say, top players can come from anywhere at any time, you really never know, i mean no of us in Europe would have said someone like Bosnia would produce anyone good, then along comes Edin Dzeko (he wasnt world class but he was good) or Romania with Gheorghe Hagi (i think he was world class) back in the day to smash expectations, i dont think you guys are doing as badly as some people think, the biggest problem you guys have is CONCACAF its the 2nd worst confederation next to Oceania, im glad for you lot youre in the Copa America against some CONMEBOL teams, better standard for you guys to compete with

Top athletic talent historically hasn't gone into soccer. That has limited the US internationally. I am not saying you could take an NFL or NBA player and he'd be able to play in the EPL or something, like Lebron could step into Man City and hang. No of course not. It's more complicated and starts much younger than that. But the fact is top young athletes when they get to the point where they focus and look towards college or pros, they are usually focusing in other sports. There is A LOT more talent in soccer as their first sport now than previously, but then you have to question the pay for play nature of so much youth sports in the US and how soccer is a formal and organized sport in the US in a way it isn't elsewhere.

I feel this video. My kid is 9. I wish there was more pickup soccer for him. I try to play with him 1v1 and that has helped him grow but that is limited. He’s in a club now but that isn’t nearly enough touches compared to Brazilian/argentine kids of the same age. They only will get the touches and experimentation though pickup soccer. *sigh*

Something else about developing youth players. A regional camp was held for west cost u14 kids and I happen to have played against one of the kids from the Timbers academy. The kid is crazy good with the ball and that's because he plays a lot of futsal. I know because of how annoying it's to try and take the ball away from him.

Futsal was R9's first love. Said it's where he learned to control the ball and such. He was that kid that scored 10+ goals every game.

yep, Carrizo is right, with the U.S. youth academy you can build correct/decent players but you cant raise players like Messi, Pele, Maradona, Ronaldinho, etc

Not with pay-to-play. Your World Cup winning squad is here. It is your sourcing method. With pay to play you are selecting for economic ability. Without pay to play and only competing based on football, then you are actually sourcing players based solely on their ability to play the sport. Also there has to be a streamlined nationwide system set in place expeditiously without waiting 40 years for business interests to converge. This would source from all available outlets be it from clubs, high schools, community colleges, and colleges and universities

When you think that Even Americas best player right now (Pulisic) had to lean into his polish roots and go to poland to train and develop, it doesn't paint a very flattering picture for US football. In Europe, talent comes before money. Clubs invest in talent for long term reward. In the US it is the opposite, you pay your way first and if you are lucky you have a job at the end.

I don't know how clubs are structured in the USA. Do you have a club in each "small town" (5,000 inhabitants)? It must be understood that in the rest of the world there are football clubs in all villages of 300 inhabitants. And that almost every month there are multiple matches of children villages against villages. With a country like the USA you almost need one League per state.

What did the Georgian youth development do right to create Kravash Kvaratskhelia? What did the Norewegians do to get Haaland? Liberia to create George Weah? World class players come from all over, not just Argentina and Brazil. Argentina currently does not have a young player near the level of Haaland or Kvaratskhelia.

Alvarez is much more than a striker, and very effective even though he´s played way less minutes than Haaland for a long time, MacAllister is creative and with high football IQ, Lautaro is a beast in Inter. Southamerican are underrated by europeans and rest of the world. It´s ok we still produce with brazil the best players in history and europeans buy them, and we use their better organized leagues, with more $$$$, to upgrade them. But skills, that $$$ can´t buy.

Not until soccer becomes a poor kid's sport in the USA. Sort of like the reason why the US keeps churning out the best basket ball players in the world. Like how Brazil keeps churning out the best soccer players in the world. There is a level of hunger to succeed where there is no plan B. These are the type of players you want on your team. Not so simple. Already, we have all MLS Academies in major mets - and - they are free. Look closely and you will find - many famous basketball players come from outside big cities - Larry Bird, French Lick, IN, Charles Barkley, Leeds, AL, Michael Jordan, Wilmington, NC. Soccer needs a bigger footprint - it needs to be in all High Schools. HS is the only free platform. Have a nice day.

Guess what? 75% of the USA can't take you or the entire rest of the world seriously when you keep being hung up on names or relegation. Either get over it or drop dead. That is precisely why 75% of the USA prefer other sports and do not care for your "beautiful game".
