Just to clarify applying to Oxford/Cambridge is a unique process. Basically, by late September you register for the admissions test(s) for the course/degree you're interested in. Then, you submit your resume and personal statement (an essay of sorts) in mid-October. In late October/early November you take your admissions test(s). In mid-November, you will also submit any written work required for your course/degree. For example, for History and Spanish, an applicant would have to submit an essay/written text that fits the requirements of what the tutors/professors are asking and submit a piece for each subject of the degree. Being a student at Oxbridge involves a lot of essay writing and reading so the tutors want to know how you think, how you articulate your thoughts, and under what conditions the work was written to better gauge whether you are a good fit for the university. Then, based on your admissions test(s) scores, written work, resume, grades (international applicants = AP scores, IB scores, SAT/ACT scores), and predicted grades (A Levels for UK applicants) you may or may not get asked to interview. The average number of applications to Oxbridge is about 22,000 (students can only apply to Oxford OR Cambridge, not both) and about 11,000 of those applicants will be called to interview, but your likelihood of being invited to interview largely depends on your chosen course/degree. BTW out of the 11,000 applicants invited to interview, about 5,000 are offered a place! By the first week of December (at the latest), you'll know if you are invited for interviews. During the second week of December, interviews are taking place, recently they've been online, but usually, you go to Oxford and stay at the dorms for the college you initially applied for. Oh also, there are over 30 colleges a part of Oxford University. Unlike in the US, in the UK, college and university are not used interchangeably, at least not to the same degree. Oxford University is made up of several different colleges that act somewhat autonomously but still stick to the standards of the University. It's like having different departments except most of the colleges will teach all of the subjects offered at Oxford. Interviews can take multiple days and an applicant will likely be interviewed several times while at Oxbridge. Not to mention that interviews at Oxbridge are notoriously unique, challenging, strange, and very scary (can personally attest to this!), so going through them can be frightening for applicants, esp. if you don't think well under duress. You will be asked about current events, topics you mentioned in your personal statement, and your written work, and you may even be given an excerpt, a math problem, or a painting/photo to analyze LIVE in front of the tutors. One of the craziest things to think about is the fact that the tutors interviewing the applicants are the best in their fields! So you have to manoeuvre your way through a challenging conversation with experts!! After interviews by the second week of January, you get notified of whether you were offered a place at Oxford. For UK applicants this is usually a conditional offer because they take their A levels (end-of-the-year exams, kind of like AP tests), at the end of the year. So, international applicants are basically applying with grades they have already acquired meaning they'll receive an unconditional offer as they already meet the grade requirements. Anyone can apply with predicted grades, but UK applicants are really the ones who will apply that way. Here's the real kicker: if an Oxford applicant applies with certain predicted grades, gets the conditional offer, but does not achieve said predicted grades, their conditional place at Oxford can be rescinded!! So totally no pressure for the students taking those exams. . . Needless to say, applying to Oxbridge is a LOT of work lol! it's not for the faint of heart and the application process is really designed to ensure the best of the best and the most dedicated students apply and make it through. Hopefully, this clears up any confusion!!

So in the book Lydia tells Ruby that her and Sutton met when he was still at Oxford. On Tumblr of all places 😂 It was right after that thing with her ex. In the books he was a reporter who seduced her for information on the company (she was 15, fucking weird). So they met online 2 years before the show takes places which means she was 16 at the time. After 6 months they talked on the phone for the first time and met 6 months later. Even though Sutton would have been in his early 20s it’s still fucking weird that this grown ass man started an online relationship with literally a teenage girl. So the fact that they knew each other before he became her teacher doesn’t make it better in any way 😂

I don’t think he really opens up about his family/daddy issues with anyone but Lydia because they’re in it together. I don’t think he wanted to tell her because then he would have to admit how bad his issues at home are. It doesn’t seem like Alistair knows even though they’re best friends. Ruby had an idea but he’s never told her the extent of their dad and his abuse so at the end of episode 6 when he confesses I think that’s why he looks so vulnerable and teary-eyed.
@ParisInTheSpringtime9992 ай бұрын
I agree with Maria above. James is still very young when it comes to dealing with family trauma and has probably never admitted to anyone other than Lydia how horrific his home situation is. I was actually happy for the three guys reacting here with such innocence because they couldn’t see what was coming. That meant they had probably not grown up with a violent narcissist like some of us. I could feel the underlying threat, the tension building in Morty. James and Lydia had developed ways to manage him as much as possible and that became just the way life was. I think about the mother a lot. I’m certain she was physically abused along the way and had to know at least subconsciously what her husband was doing to the kids but couldn’t admit it to herself. That’s why she was wondering where James got that cut on his lip when she knew somewhere inside where he probably got it. What a painful household to grow up and live in. When James met Ruby, he found someone he could be somewhat honest with. If only Lydia had met someone better for her.

Yep, and if I remember correctly from the book, they met online when she was 15 or 16 after that disastrous relationship that nearly destroyed the Beaufort reputation (father had to pay that guy off). They fell in love before they ever met in person. Plus, the teacher is supposed to be like 24 or so, closer to her in age. As she said, he was studying to become a teacher when they met and was the first one who wasn't interested in her because of her name. Unfortunately, that actor is 31, I believe, and while some people look way younger than their age he most certainly does not pass for a guy in his early twenties. However, you should get used to him, that's all I'm saying 😅

I've seen a couple of student/teacher relationships in german tv shows, though I think it's not as 'popular' as it was over a decade ago. Idk if it has to do with the legal age in germany being 16 (teacher/student is still not legal for the obv. power dynamic reasons I'm pretty sure), but I feel like it has been more positive in german fiction than in other. I often treat it like the whole vampire age gap thing. It's fiction and some stuff I'll gotta look differently at than irl, idk 🤷♂️ Though I definitely agree with some other comments that choosing a younger actor that looks more the book age might have helped the situation at least a little bit.

It's a sad situation about Lydia & Graham, especially they fell in love before he got the teaching job which complicates their relationship. Think they got an older actor to play Graham so fans would cringe about the student teacher deal. In reality, we dont choose who we fall in love, it just happens. As for Lydia, she says that Graham didn't know who she was before meeting her so it made it more special. The Beauforts' family dinamics is very screwd up with the dad being such a contol freak & he cares less about Lydia. The pregnancy is just another scandal under her belt. I know nothing about the book so we'll see what happens in S2. 😬
