Hey Everyone! Thanks for watching and commenting. We read every one. There has been numerous comments on our use of the Fram filters and we are well aware of their reputation. Because we hate to be wasteful and our boat came with a lot of these filters, we will use them and change them frequently until we are out and will replace them with better filters. Teal is on top of it. Again thank you so much for watching and following our journey to the big blue sea. We'll see you next Friday! XO

If I was to make a suggestion, in the future I might consider Hastings or NAPA Gold filters. Warm oil drains much faster than cold oil.

Teal, confined engine spaces are much easier when working with ratchet spanners, the better sets have a tiny reversible leaver so that you can still maintain the correct angle on the bolt. Love how you all work together to achieve the goal you’ve set for yourselves, great job getting those engines started and running sweet.

Adding my two cents worth on the removal of the fill caps will drastically decrease the vacuum you are pulling against. Also the comment about running the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil up helps a lot. I might think about getting one of those small pumps that go on your drill motor. Zatara uses those to great benefit.
@Frindleeguy
@Frindleeguy 5 жыл бұрын
If you want an automatic pump, just use a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. Store a couple extra buckets and lids, and you can even store the oil in the bucket until you can dispose of it properly. You just make the bucket airtight with an in and out for air running through a vacuum or shop vac (the oil stays in the bucket and the air goes out the top). Instant automatic pump- usually takes 10-15 minutes to drain 1-1.5 gallons of oil, faster with warm oil. I call it the suckit buckit. :)

Hello Basik Crew, While Emma was working on the engine. I was wondering if Teal was thinking, can she turn that screw any slower? That takes patience. I just loved how quickly both those engines jumped to life. This was Text book Pure Perfection on engine preparation. The only bad part was the ghastly appearing paint splotches, and rust on some of the engine components. Like all the perfection you've incorporated so far,, how could you let such slovenly work remain on the engines. I know, out of sight, out of mind, Love Y'all. HaHa. I just had to throw some computer chair Quarterbacking in.

Hey hey wonderful family....well done again... just some tips for the nest time ...the oil is thick when cold .. a bigger hand pump won’t help much... Next time run up the engine a bit before you take the oil out. Or put a heater under the engine en heat it up quite a bit. ( the oil ...not hot but ...warm other wise you burn your self.) A nice thing to know is that if you pre lube the impeller there is no reason to prime the raw / sea water filter. It will suck up the water by it self. It must do that every time !!!! ( open the seatap lol ) At checking the raw/ seawater filter Lupe the seal with a small bit of Vaseline so the next time you can open it easily and it’s air tight.

Tips!: 1. consider a small electric (12V) pump dedicated in the engine bay for oil changes. Nothing complicated, but it sure makes life easier at sea when you will be doing them more frequently. 2. buy a "snap punch"; normally used to mark where you drill metal; use it to poke a hole in the oil filter near the top-most portion. Do this the day before the oil change and all the oil will drain to the sump. 3. I have seen some replace the sump drain plug with a plumbing elbow and hose (pipe) so you can pull the oil out that way. Not sure if this is as safe, though. 4. Do some research on oil filters; Fram vs Win...etc. :) Cheap is not your friend. 5. "rattle siphon" makes fueling/de-fueling a breeze for anyone. :)

I think you have done a really good job on your work, much better than I see from other owners and techs. A few safety points I saw in this video are on the electrical connections you want to put terminal insulators on all the ungrounded vdc conductors also some sort of dialectic shield on all the terminals. On ther fuel filters you have racor 500FG when you need a 500ma here is a quote from racor (The Coast Guard does not accept ’FG’ units converted to ’MA’ configurations). The fg is the On and Off Highway Turbine Series model were the 500ma is for marine use. Keep up the good work.

After you remove as much oil with the pump with a flat tray you can remove the screw from the oil pan to get the last bit out. Also at this point sometimes you’ll find out the screw is magnetic that will gather any metal shards. If not you can use a magnet to run along the body of the oil pan in the direction of drain hole. If you see substantial amounts of shards come out you may have a bigger internal problem. If small amounts come out that’s not unusual. The very technical guys will leave the magnet stuck to the bottom of the outside oil pan to collect any future shards. Auto manufactures many years ago started to add magnets to the inside of oil pans.

All engine manufactures say to change oil after the engine is hot - all the dirt that had settled out will now be suspended in the oil and will be pumped out AND the oil will be Much easier to pump out .
@chuckg7311
@chuckg7311 5 жыл бұрын
That’s true for an engine in regular use. Here, in an engine w/o use for ten years better to be safe and get as much crud out of sump as possible. After ten hours do another oil change and have a sample tested for each engine.
@dougmaclean9752
@dougmaclean9752 5 жыл бұрын
@@chuckg7311 After 40+ years of working on engines ( national and state certified master mechanic ) I have opened up enough old engines to find a rubbery layer of sludge in the bottom of the sump that would not drain out without being warmed up and diluted with the oil . That layer of sludge would be thinner in lower hour engines but still there after the engine sits for a long period of time .I do agree that a second oil change won't hurt . Cranking the engine with the fuel shut off was a good idea BUT the oil filter was dry and no oil be pumped to the bearings until its full and I don't know if there was enough crank time for it to fill . All that being said I think the engines will be fine but all future oil changes should be done hot .
