Wily You are doing well. I'm a mechanic. This is how its done in a workshop. You clean the block and head and they are ready to go back together. Blow out the head bolt hole with the airline with a rag over the holes so you don't wear whatever is in the head bolt holes. Give the head and block a final wipe down. fit the head gasket the right way round. motors with heavy heads find 2 old head bolts and cut the heads off of them and hacksaw a slot in the top of them. you can use them as guides . It saves destroying a head gasket by dragging the head across the block to line up the head. remove the 2 guide bolts and oil the head bolts and fit them finger tight. Lets say the head bolt torque is 90 tf/lbs. do it in 3 stages. do them all to 30ftlbs. then 60, then 90. Grab a whiteout pen and as you tighten a bolt put a stripe from the centre of the bolt to the front of the bolt facing the front of the motor. This way if you loose track or get disturbed you know where you are in the sequence. Most heads are torqued from the centre out diagonally. That just makes things easy.
@DontbeWily8 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing this. I did think about the guide bolts. Never knew about oil on the threads. I did go back to the camera. I guess i used it as my white paint. I was concerned about head bolt torque. 90lbs does not seem tight for a head bolt. But i will research and read comments like yours and go back over it if necessary. Thanks for watching

Hey Wily and Jacob, The D20A is coming along and it's great that you got it started. Since the head was milled to take a warp out, the valve adjustment might be off a bit. Not knowing how much they shaved off .010, .020, .030 could effect the power. I'd assume they are a bit too tight now. I looked up the valve clearance and got it off of a forum site, not the manual. They were saying the valves should be, Intake .32mm /.0137 Exhaust .05mm / .0196 . Metric / Thousands of an inch. I hope it's not too tight to tight to get the water pump back in since the head is back on.

Thanks for another great video Wiley and Jacob. It was interesting and enjoyable. Congratulations to you Wiley and Jacob for redoing the head and associated pieces and getting it running!!!!!!! Yeah!!!!!!!!!! Happy for you that the motor ran after all those years!!!!!’ Great job of getting the head worked on and reassembled. Then getting all the other associated pieces back together. You got it running. Now get all the levers working again and your drive line hooked up again. Then hopefully your hydraulic system will work again. Been sitting a lot of years. Am hoping it will move again and the blade will go up and down again. If do you have success and closer to moving it. Wonderful job Wiley. Jacob learned a lot here on this one too. Will be anxious to see the next video on this one to see how you come out. Thanks for showing us Wiley. Been real interesting. Take care and be safe. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.

Whenever you take a head off and you have a machine shop work on the head and you are waiting for the gasket, make yourself two guide pins so you can drop the head down without worrying about whether it is lined up and the gasket has slipped !

Hello Wily and Jacob I agree with the last comments about valve adjustment 100% correct. Also another trick is if you buy a couple of long bolts the same thread as the head bolts cut the heads off and screw one in the front of the block one in the back and slide the head on it will be in the correct position for you. Also its a good idea to get a thread tap and clean the threads out in the block then clean your head bolts on the wire wheel. Just a couple of tricks to make your job a bit easier. Cheer from Australia !!!!!
