We are using online courses and apps to learn Portuguese. We have a pretty good vocabulary of words to get us though most scenarios (Mostly to do with farming and properties though). Even though we have been here for two years, we dont live in a populated area, so its not often that we are speaking with people, apart from cashiers at shops or the occasional hello to our neighbours. I think if we lived and worked in a city we would be much further along with our language skills as we would be immersed in it. I'm in no rush to do anything and I'm just enjoying everything happening at its own time and pace at the moment :)

I'm still looking forward to your in depth pruning video Ken😉 When do the Portuguese tradionally prune. My inlaws in Turkey harvest in November and prune in Feburary after the frosts have finished. I'm not sure if avoiding the frosts is for the trees benefit or theirs! Their trees are so tall and over grown I'd harvest with a chainsaw not a shaker🤣

I'd encourage you do gift something to your neighbours, Joaquim and the others seems like a good people. Maybe even some of the honey you harvest or nice bottle of wine. Cheers! :)

Hi Ivo, of course we have bought them gifts, we also share in the harvest and Joaquim gets use of our fields for his sheep as well as the spring grasses which he hay bales and uses for summer feeding. :)

We do provide breads, presunto, olives, cheese and of course some wine and beers when we are harvesting. Joaquims wife is always cooking something delicious, and I think he likes to go home for his some homecooked food. We have of course offered for them to stay before :)

Looks like Portugal and it’s people care about each other. The fact that you have only been there two years and they really made the harvest possible. I watched other harvest videos and saw them using a machine that shaking the whole trees and the used that vibratory rake also. Are those not available in your area or to expensive to hire? They certainty made quick work of it.

Those machines are very expensive and I think they wouldn't work on most of our trees as the trunks are so big and thick

When dealing with bee's learn to use your other senses.. the ear is the most useful of all senses... when approaching hives really listen to their humming, when you piss them off they change gear into combat mode!.. also think in terms of vibration and frequency!... if you fear the bee's they will sense it as do most animals..

Ken, there's a great machine that separates the olives from the leaves. Might be worth a future investment, certainly a lot easier than picking out the leaves and twigs from the harvest. Love to see the farm in the autumn sun even if it's a very busy time of year.

What a farm life, far away from mundane 9 to 6 monotonous job life. Last year olive harwest was 1665 kgs May it be 2000kgs this harvest

Hi Nadene, no it doesn't damage them permanently as they grow new branches so fast every year. We have to prune off most of those old branches anyways and many more will grow back in their place, full of olives.

We did not prune the trees for 2 years so they yielded a lot more. I also think that the trees had more fruit because of our beehives. We will prune them this year and next harvest will be much smaller.

Beautiful and brilliant! Update: At Madeira now and looving it... First time in my whole life I got the Home feeling... So gonna establish here, hopefully Fall in love LEARNT. We males have the standing foot on the left foot, females on the right foot. Lean over you can actually streth out the whole thighs ++... Some crackling in the neck ++ it will be. But we have it on the left. Learnt from a statue :) So frustrating in the start they use cash a lot, but will be fine. Getting a new Millienium Bank VISA-card soon hopefully. :) Will be fine... mayybe a company in the future. - Sr. Magnar
