Installing a whole house dehumidifier is a huge comfort boost, prevents costly overuse of the A/C to remove humidity, and keeps indoor air quality high. If you are building as airtight as possible in any climate with more humidity than a desert, one of these machines should be a consideration in your HVAC plans. Follow along as we install our Broan B70DHV unit and complete all the ductwork!

Short answer is yes it will make an incredible difference. We have a similar climate in the UK. We have super insulated our house and we use standalone dehumidifiers. Our energy bills have dropped off the scale. The moisture content is now correct. We have no mould and the dehumidifiers produce enough heat without needing additional heating apart from a single small woodburner when it goes below freezing. We are super happy, I hope your system works for you too. Best wishes from England💪👍

If you purchased the grey fire caulk you’re right it’s brittle. 3M has 2 types of red fire caulks one of them stays flexible I use to use it for my electrical rough in holes. Big box stores are not a reliable source it’s hit or miss if they have it. My crawl space dehumidifier discharge is very warm will this unit be the same injecting warmer air while you’re trying to cool the house. Your comments about flex are funny. All new homes today use this flex type duct luckily it is usually in the attic or crawl space never in the walls. The mice use it as their own super highways after they chew through it.

The fire foam would probably do a better job too, honestly the grey crap needs to get taken off the market in my opinion. I'm not really sold that any of the fire sealants are that substantially different from standard sealing materials in the first place, and especially that they would make any difference in a real-world fire situation. The dehum does emit warm air which adds a little load in the summer, however you can keep the house comfortably at a higher temp due to the lower humidity so I feel like the A/C runs less overall (one day I'll study this a little more). The best benefit in our climate is in cooler shoulder seasons where the resdiual dehum heat keeps the house warmer, and the heat pump also runs less. True that most flex is in spaces at least somewhat accessible, but I've seen a lot get installed in floor platforms between first and second floors, which is just as bad as a wall as far as access goes. The most recent build I saw this done in (by a "professional" HVAC installer) also had most of the oval pipe feeding that flex run in exterior walls with nothing but a little piece of bubble wrap taped to just the exterior side 🙄 it pains me to know that so many systems installed today are doomed for a lifetime of inefficiences that could have been resolved so easily upfront if given the care or attention

Applying Sealing Tape tip If u tape it right It seals right For RH threads - 4 most normal type threads Hold the Fitting in your Left hand with the threads sticking out in front of you. The Tape goes over the top of the pipe Threaded section & go around under Add seal putty if u wish Saves time & works
