These 6,8,9.9 and 15 are a low compression motor. They do that for a easy starting. My dad’s friend who have a mercury shop for 50+ years told me this. He also said that anything below 60psi on these motor, it’s time to change the ring.
@outboardfinatic Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the comment and that’s awesome. From what I’ve read in manuals and just overtime working on them anything below 90 on these for compression will make them run very poorly. I am able to look in the cylinders with a borescope camera so I’m usually able to tell if it’s going to be a runner or not. I’ve never seen one run or even try to run if the compression was below 90.

What do you need besides the carb kit and plugs to change it from a 9.9 to 15. Where do you get the new larger jet
@mogrady31able Жыл бұрын
So, do you have info on the specific parts needed to turn the 9.9 into a 15hp? I just picked up a decent 1996 9.9hp for $300. I have a nice 8hp yamaha on my dinghy currently but need more hp!

Nice video. Is there are reason you didn't lube or fog the cylinders before pulling the cord?
@outboardfinatic2 жыл бұрын
I Only do that if the flywheel is locked up or stiff or something like that. I also have a bore scope camera which I wanna show in videos but the camera makes it look weird so I can’t really show what I can see in the cylinder.
@theglobalvagabond30742 жыл бұрын
@@outboardfinatic It would probably be appreciated by your viewers if you went thru the entire process as if the pistons were rusted and seized. You don't have to show the viewer the actual image from the bore scope, but telling them that this is one of the steps would be helpful to IMO.

please help, at the 9.19 mark, where did that ball bearing come from? I just disassembled my carb to clean and now cant figure out where to put that thing . Thanks and great work!
@outboardfinatic2 жыл бұрын
Bowl side of carb. Flip it so the opening of the bowl is facing down. Put the ball where the plunger is on the other side. Then you put the tiny spring in with the bolt that is hollow on the inside. And don’t forget your gaskets

I’m close to it I’m in pa. And I personally like both. I’m a Suzuki guy tho when it comes to the newer 4 strokes. But then again I’m suzuki certified cus my job are suzuki dealers. But when it comes to 2 strokes nothing can really beat a Yamaha as they hold their value so we’ll

Is that thing missing the thermostat? I did it think those pumped a strong stream til it was good and warm
@outboardfinatic2 жыл бұрын
Your absolutely correct. But I already had the motor warm for the video. Also a lot of people forget that there are a couple different versions of this motor. For the most part they are pretty similar but some have different housings that require two washers that go in the water pump. So I’ve seen them pump stream right away and others wait for the thermostat to open. But I always check block for temp w temp gun and never overheated
@northcarolinabassin76432 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the reply, I just picked up a mid 90s 15hp. Guy said it wouldn’t run, and when pumping primer bulb it was leaking gas everywhere. I took it apart and found a tiny crack in the float and it had with gas. Got a new float on the way with a rebuild kit. Only other thing the motor needs is a choke knob. If you can would you mind to make a video particularly on these carbs?
@outboardfinatic2 жыл бұрын
@@northcarolinabassin7643 absolutely. I know these carbs like the back of my hand at this point lol. What would you like to see in particular. I have in mind I can do removal,rebuild, and reinstall and do my best going step by step. Cus they can be tricky sometimes

How could you tell if its a 6hp, 8hp, 9.9hp, or 15hp older merc? If theyre all the same.... Serial number plate gone.
@outboardfinatic Жыл бұрын
Personally I would take the carb apart and look at the main jet that’s in the drain screw. 6hp-.039 8hp-.046 9.9hp- .056 15 hp- .072 One of these numbers should be stamped on the jet located on the drain screw if the carb. As long as it’s the original carbs and hasnt been messed with that’ll tell you what hp it is
