Great video. Thanks for sharing. If you could add to your explanation, in this situation, a description of the fuel system and the typical failure points, how a VST works, etc. That would enhance the learning experience for us newbies.

I have a 2006 115hp efi, it runs great but in neutral the rpms bounce up and down 100rpms when it’s cold, almost like I’m revving it slightly. It never staff and corrects itself when it gets warm, any idea on what to check?

@outboardfinatic Күн бұрын
It is a little hard cus I can’t physically see the motor and hear it. But they are ecm controlled so if the temp is too cold they will fluctuate the rpm’s till the motors nice and warm. The ecm controls everything on those motors and it’ll do that because it’s not at operating temp yet. Kinda like in this vid and this motor when I show the computer you can see the rpm’s go from 700-900 and back and forth until the motors at operating temp then the ecm will keep it right around operating temp rpm’s. The only other thing is maybe the IAC is taking a crap and not operating properly. That be my only guesses since the motor isn’t stalling or having issues once warmed up. Hope this helps!

I noticed you use the Sierra oil filter for a lot of your boats you service. I have this exact same engine maybe a few years older because the oil filter location is on the bottom right of the engine instead of the top right. Anyway my question is, this filter is a lot smaller than the OEM Volvo filter but the Sierra 18-7824-2 says on the box it replaces the bigger oem filter. I wonder if you had any problems with these because of the size difference, does this usually matter?

So we haven’t had any issues with them thus far. And I’ve been using Sierra products myself for the last 5 years. It’s a very popular oil filter and fits many of the engines. They are typically a little smaller and I’m not 100 percent sure why tbh. I can look into it more/ask my boss who’s been doing this for 40 years but It hasn’t caused any problems for us with oil pressure or anything like that. We do sometimes use OEMs if I can get them in or if someone really insists on using. Also mercury quicksilver also make a filter for them and it’s the same size as the Sierra ones. Why didn’t the freezeplugs pop
@outboardfinatic
@outboardfinatic Ай бұрын
That’s a great qs. I spoke with my boss who’s been doing this for 40 years and he said it’s kinda a misconception on freeze out plugs because they aren’t really freeze out plugs. To his knowledge they are cast iron plugs and the blocks are molded in sand and so those plugs are meant to be able to drain and clean the blocks when assembly time comes. Why they didn’t blow out still still kinda puzzles me and maybe there’s a better explanation someone can give us on here. But the whole engine was frozen solid when it came in so I think the ice just went to the weakest spot it could find but still you would think the plugs would’ve popped as well. I’ve had a decent amount that have done that if the whole engine didn’t freeze. I hope this kinda answers your qs and maybe someone on here who has a bit better history knowledge can answer a little more in depth

Just guarantee all the water is out of the hose and out of the drive. Since I work for a marina we have to guarantee everything is completely out so nothing comes and bites us in the rear. Prevents the hose splitting, water pick up tube from cracking any water chilling in the outdrive that hasn’t gotten out, any debris laying in the hose is pushed out so we have solid water flow come spring,rust preventative inside the hose as well as the outdrive with antifreeze. These vids I made were to show people more than likely what every marina shop will do during winterizations on the motor end of things. This is just a recommendation as I see a lot of issues come in the shop with issues after winter and they almost always spend a lot of money instead of taking the extra time and doing it right. Again that a recommendation but I strongly encourage people take the extra steps and guarantee they won’t have issues come spring because if not this will make people realize how much money they will be spending to come see a marina and more than likely they’ll just stop boating in general which we don’t want to happen.BOAT=Break Out Another Thousand. I’m tryna get that mindset out of the industry and just help people out. I hope this helps ya understand my point of view on it

What’s the cons of running the coolant through the muffs at operating temp until it comes out pure coolant? Seems like that would be wayyyy easier and just as effective
@outboardfinatic
@outboardfinatic 2 ай бұрын
@@mississippimotorsports3286 your just hopefully diluting the water enough in the block where it wouldn’t crack. You’d have to run the engine for a decent amount of time before any of the water fully gets out. Aka just wasting a bunch of antifreeze because you’ll start seeing antifreeze almost instantly coming out of the exhaust because of the way the cooling system works. A lot of people would run it see the antifreeze come out and think it’s good and I promise you it’s not. The block has to be filled up and there are a lot of thin chambers where the water circulates and will sit especially on the 4.3s. I can almost garuntee something’s going to crack I see so many of them come through the shop from people doing it this way or just not doing it properly. Also a lot of debris and blockages happen and you want to get that out and make sure all the water came out. This way garuntees all water is out and antifreeze is replacing the water and also acts as a rust preventative internally. It dosent take a lot to crack a block when waters involved. The antifreeze does tech freeze but it turns into a slush below freezing temps. The water will just expand and crack the block almost guaranteed. I know you can get tanks and run it on your muffs w antifreeze but please don’t do that I promise you you will have problems and most of the time you won’t know you have a crack till your out on the water with a load on the boat. The short answer is it dosent garuntee your getting all the water out and your just hoping it’ll dilute but almost always it won’t and the water will expand and crack. Hope this helps

Great, detailed video. Thanks for posting. You unhooked, blew air through, then added antifreeze to four hoses. What is the function of the two other hoses at the thermostat housing that you didn't disconnect? If I've already run fuel stabilizer/treatment through the fuel system, during the last time I took the boat out, and I'm not changing the oil, I assume that I don't have to run/warm up the engine prior to draining, blowing air, and adding anti-freeze through the four hoses. Also, what diameter Easy Out/thread extractor did you use and what psi do you use to blow out the residual water?
@outboardfinatic
@outboardfinatic 2 ай бұрын
The other 2 hoses go to the bottom of the manifolds. The ones I took off go to the top which will still fill up the whole thing you can remove either or but once you put the hoses back on the hose will just fill with antifreeze from the thermostat housing to the other hoses that you didn’t remove. 2 go to the manifold one goes to the block and one to the outdrive. I would say just fire it up to make sure it runs good. The hot water does help to to drain the water and make sure any crustys get out but it’s not necessary. And honestly I don’t remember the size of the easy out I usually just get something that can wedge to spin out the drain plugs usually drill a hole in the center then jam something in there since it’s just plastic. Psi I’m not sure we have a huge overhead compressor at my work we just kick it on and it atomically pushes out a lot of psi. More the better you’re not gonna hurt anything at all with too much air it’s just gonna help get every drop out and any rocks/debris out of the motor. Hope this helps lmk if ya need anything else

As long as we’re talking about 4.3s it’s Impossible to not have drains unless you have the blue knob style which is usually on the newer motors. There will always be way to drain both sides of the block and the manifolds. If there’s no blue drain plugs then a lot of times there will be brass metal ones. Sometimes they don’t have drains on the manifolds and you’ll just have to pull the hose to it off to drain it. But most have drains either under the manifold or in the back of the manifold and always a way to drain both sides of the block. I’ve never ran into any 4.3 I/O that didnt have drain plugs other than the blue knob style and they even have at least 2 drains plugs on them

Either fuel lines clogged going to carb, possibly fuel pump going bad. But I have noticed some if the after market floats and needles just something ain’t right with them. Idk if maybe u used a aftermarket carb kit but for some reason the floats don’t sit right and there’s no way to adjust them and the needles don’t seem to set the best. Maybe try an oem kit and adjust your idle mixture slightly and see what happens

No aftermarket kit used yet. I did order one of Amazon with good reviews tho. I will be installing it on Monday and I will let you know what happens. I also ordered a new fuel filter. What sucks is that I only have may 20 hours on this kicker. I must’ve used crappy fuel at one time and it varnished up last winter.

@@sauzaman72gotcha gotcha yea lmk what ya find I just had one motor that was super clean before and I did the whole fuel system went to run it and one of the fuel lines from the engine fitting was clogged so wouldn’t run unless I was choking it. I’ve also have had the inline fuel filter be bad right out of the box. Took me forever to back track it to the brand new filter I just put on. Basically was collapsed out of factory and had similar running issues. Just some things to think about as well

Just wanted to give you an update. I replaced a fuel line going to the carb bc it had a pin hole, but it still stalled on low idle. Took the carb apart again, and it was full of gunk. It must’ve loosened it all up the last time I cleaned it. Cleaned the whole carb and both high idle and low idle jets again and now it purrs like a kitten at low idle. Thanks again!

The drain plug where you can attach a hose can that be bought? I just have a nut and it makes a mess.

They come on the engine like that from factory. My guess is either someone changed yours out or it’s an older model? But I would think you could buy this style drain plug for it I’ll see if I can find a part # for you. But then yea it’s way easier u just put a hose on it and it drains super easy

@@evanhunt8563 hahaha you know what’s hilarious is I’m actually really big on wearing gloves and always do and get shit from the other techs lol. But this just so happened to be right when I ran out of gloves and had an order on its way. But yes always wear gloves and keep your body straight at least that’s what I think especially after being around a lot of these older techs who have issues from not simply taking care of their bodies by wearing gloves etc…

I believe what you refer to as a fuel filter is in fact a one way valve..

Not sure what your referring to but if your referring to 11:00 in the vid it is a fuel filter. Also called a strainer by Yamaha. In quote from the service manual Yamaha OEM In Line Fuel filter Part number #64624251-02-00 or 646-24251-02-00 can also be used as a remote oil tank inline filter

Hi, your videos are great! I have an 89 5.8L omc cobra. 2 questions for you 1. So I usually drain the block and manifolds of water then fill up the block with antifreeze, then hook up a sub pump to earmuffs on outdrive and it is submerged in a 5 gallon bucket of antifreeze. I then turn on the sub pump and run the boat while it’s sucking up the anitfreeze. Do you think that is sufficient for getting the water system and outdrive protected from freezing in the winter? 2. with your winterizing juice as you call it what is the mixture for that and do you have to fog the engine after that or does that mixture take care of it?

@outboardfinatic 3 ай бұрын
@@MrAirsoft0917 hey there as long as you get all the water out then that would be fine. But you’re already removing all the hoses to be able to blow them out to make sure there’s absolutely no water. At that point I would just say fill from the hoses because honestly that’s the best way to make sure you don’t crack anything. Doing it from a bucket has been probs sufficient enough and probs just been diluting the water a little bit but this way garuntees no issues come spring The mixture is a 6 gallon tank. 1 part 2 stroke oil 1 part fogging oil 1 part stabilizer and then fill the rest with 90 ethanol free gas

some guys "fog" the engine...do you?
@outboardfinatic
@outboardfinatic 3 ай бұрын
I have a 6 gallon tank mixed with fogging oil, 2 stroke oil, gas stabilizer, and 90 ethanol free gas. Run the engines for 15 or so min and the motors fuel system is good to go. Can either run it in the fuel water separator or hook up the tank directly. So yes I do fog the motor just don’t go through each cylinder and spray it. It just mixes in with my “Fuel Treatment”
