Free rig made by Korean pro bass angler Sunpil Kim and he introduce it in 2006 KSA League. After few years Japanese anglers import it and start use 'free rig'. 'Free rig' is super popular ( No.1 ) rig in Korea and its very effective for any body of water like 'Texas rig'. When it compare to free rig & Texas rig, free rig can make more re-act motions.

Awesome introduction vid for free rig! Only one thing to correct is that it was made/developed in S.Korea but introduced to the US market and tournaments by the Japanese pros. Ppl in Korea use free rig all the time because of that. We use texas rig to punch through cover but to read the bottom structures and stuff we always use free rig. Some pros in Korea points out that a lot of beginners are usung free rig too much, like an 1/8oz free rig on a spinning reel, a 1/4oz free rig on a M baitcating setup, and 3/8~1/2oz free rig on a MH baitcasting setup. Haha There is a setup+technique call the unbalanced free rig in Korea. It's a bit of a different setup, kinda like a ned rig of a free rig version, but the action of the lure is a lot different. This was also developed by a Korean pro. It's especially good when bass don't bite a regular 4~5 inch bait, and a ned rig is snagging too much. Plus you don't have to carry ned jigheads. We are using free rig on sea fishing also. For flounders, seabass and rock fish, when they are not eating jighead+soft plastics or are located around rocks and stuff, free rig is definitely better than jigheads.

I can see the success improving with using braid for its sensitivity along with a sensative rod. Here in South Africa in my home province we a lot of grass in our dams and fish weedless texas rigs( mostly unweighted) to prevent snags. I will try this rig next weekend for sure. Ideally, you would want to use a floating/bouyant soft plastic with the Free rig. That allows one to effectively work the entire water column; and be able to keep the bait in front of suspended fish for longer periods of time.

I've been trying this rig out a bit lately. No luck yet. My experience has been that it lacks the sensitivity of the Carolina rig and the Texas rig. I think this might be due to the fact that the weight is being "muffled" by the soft plastic when dragged. When dragged, the weight is covered by the soft plastic, hence the "muffling". Not giving up yet. I think I need a more sensitive rod, and I need to hop more than drag.
@davidfelton30849 ай бұрын
I think you're right about the technique part. In all the videos I've watched, it's all about getting the weight separated from the bait so it can flutter down behind it (hence the wider bait recommendations). Hop it and drop your rod tip to give the weight slack to fall faster to the bottom and see how that works.

The Free rig was created in South Korea. I have been using only free rigs or jig heads for all my fishing for the past 25 years. Free rig fishing can be used in all water from flatfish, korea sea bass, and rockfish in the ocean to bm bass and ssogari in freshwater. As expected, Korea's world-class fishing skills are excellent. The number of people who fish in Korea is about 1/4 of the total.

You definitely have the right sinker. You need to add bobber stop after sinker however as this will protect knot and protect your expensive DAN sinker. I like straight shank hook with keeper best for this technique. Check out my tips sometime. Keep up great work. Scott YankeeLipper Fishing. 😁
@joestrummer95078 ай бұрын
Interesting rig but I see the "separation between the weight and bait" as creating slack line which hinders bite detection. The weight and bait hit the water, the weight sinks along your line to the bottom while the bait slowly falls creating more and more slack as it sinks. From your rod tip to the bait there's a big V with a ton of slack between the weight and the bait. Any bite you feel is after the fish has the bait, swims, and takes up the slack in your line, hence the "light bite" here. The slack gives the fish plenty of time to spit the bait out before you can set the hook. The term controlled slacklining describes what you do with a t-rig, jig, etc. and you can't do this with this rig.
