BMX will never die. Slopestyle is amazing but as said in the video it isn't that accessible to the masses. So BMX will always be there, even as a stepping stone to Slopestyle. Also, as BMX is smaller they can spin and flip faster 😉

right on man, this guy dont know what BMX is, his vid on how bmx died. BMX literally means Bicycle Motocross. no one says what the bike has to look like, its all BMX!!!! i hate how this guy who prob cant even ride a bike makes all these mini documentary on extreme sports. there so put together but the first shit he sees in google. im sure he puts some time in it but i know a lot of people part of the community that cant stand this guys view.

@@incredible5587 this guys view is perfect he does research into the sports and he is very right about bmx it has become less popular and yes it may have been bicycle motocross but now it has transitioned into what it is today with specific setups and bikes (for example if i took my mountain bike to my local pump track its not bmx because each bike has different limitations that gives the sports differences) . The sport has transitioned from a category to a specific sport where specific bikes have to be used in order for it to be classed as bmx. And it is true BMX is dying because of the lack of money in it because its not a mainstream sport unlike slope-style that quite obviously has a lot of fans im not saying it will die im just saying it will probably never become mainstream again and has come and gone like slope-style probably will.

Like Kuru said, It's a niche subject. Think about how many fans something like football has, but how many among those fans are interested in watching documentary style videos about it? Nah, majority only care about the competitions because of the adrenaline they get watching. Same would go for the sports covered here. And the amount of fans are even fewer. What most fans are the adrenaline they get from watching the actual competition. The actual performance. Not some guy talking about the history behind it.

Always love your content Jimmy. Thank you for covering a sport that I love so much. One thing I would add is, the advent of downhill parks (converted ski resorts) has changed the landscape of mountain biking a lot. These lift assisted parks basically eliminated the "earn your turns" mentality that so many XC riders held on to in the past. Parks like this allowed riders to push the envelope further and further, as well as, marrying different disciplines and styles together. Keep up the great work brotha!

I think both sports will grow together. Slopestyle for me is awesome as I see it as a further evolution of BMX. BMX started as an emulation of MX racing then went on to have freestyle, dirt jumps and street riding. I grew up riding BMX and now am riding an MTB. Likely won’t be doing Slopestyle anytime soon but enduro riding through jump lines and downhill sections is definitely something I see a lot of people doing with a BMX background.
@eve-llblyat2576

Slopestyle is a niche in MTB. Its not that exiting to ride always the same dirt jumps. Its only famouse because you have this big personalitys. Similar to tony hawk, but in reality everybody was steet skating and no one rides vert. Bike Park is the absolute King, most favorite type at the moment. Because Bikeparks with it jumplines, nearly everybody has one in close proximity. But free ride is the most exciting for riders and fans. Combination of exploring building, often it goes to one big epic stunt. But not that exessible, becasue you need to live in special areas. In the sector of competition, even downhill is much bigger than slopestyle. And with events get bigger and more extrem, with epic urban downhill events, total rough worldcup races or the insane redbull hardline. And the small child enduro racing becomes more popular year after year. Every race is like an adventure. Or the mass starts like mega avalanche, mountain of hell, every body has watched it ones.

I've been in bmx for 20 years, so i tend to think i have a good view on both now that I've grown into mtb. Slopestyle as a discipline couldn't replace (or kill) bmx simply because like slopestyle is a facet of mtb, bmx has many facets too. Facets that are in some cases (bmx flatland, or street) completely out of the realm of mountainbiking. They're both awesome, i like how bmx has inspired slopestyle (assuming it has) and like the video probably said, both will keep facing a *booming* future.

I have to say, as a current 30 year old MTB’r with a family, the MTB community is one of the best ones out there. Not to shit on BMX, but I skateboarded throughout middle and high school, and the skate and BMX communities share a lot of similarities, most of those being negative aspects. In MTB I can go ride with my family including my wife, who just likes fun, fast, non technical flow trails, and my four year old son, who either sits on a seat mounted in front of me, or rides his own bike on easy trails, and when I’m by myself, I go ride trails with much higher risk factors… gap jumps, drops, fast downhill, etc. it has been the most open and welcoming community I have ever seen. BMX like skateboarding seems to have that gatekeeper mentality, and beginners or those less skilled are often felt shunned from the community. I’m not saying this happens 100% of the time, but I know it’s still there. Also, in the MTB community, safety is always a priority, whereas BMX and skateboarding will brand you as a pussy if you’re seen with protective gear outside of competitions. In MTB, we think you look dumb if you’re on a trail without a helmet. I think the punkish attitude that was soooo heavily associated with skate and BMX put a damper on their acceptance. Just my two cents as someone who’s kind of been on both sides.

Slopestyle is a sport, and like it is said in the video, it is not nearly as accessible. It is done by a small group of very dedicated people (mostly pros and semi pros), that just really show what is possible on a mountain bike. BMX is for everyone who can affort a few 100 dollars and is willing to try. I did both, and now that I am almost 40, I sometimes go out and roll around a skatepark with my BMX. I don't see myself hitting big doubles anywhere soon again (I also don't own a Slopestyle bike anymore). Crankworx started in 2004. BMX riders perfected the Whistler dirt slope style course back in 2006 essentially killing their own sport in the process. Friends have told me those were some of the best dirt jumps built to this day. Bikes got lighter. Suspensions helped with going bigger. As well as bike geometry improving. Now you can build a good hardtail that weighs in at 18-20lbs while your average custom built top of the line street bmx is 21lbs without pegs and 25lbs with 4 pegs. Bigger bikes just make big jumps easy.

What have you done to me?! Because of you I'm currently thrown around by a massive wave of nostalgia.. I started mountainbiking exactly at the time it started to evolve into what it is today. In 2001 when I turned 14 I got my first bike, a Kona Roast (as ridden by John Cowan before he got his slightly modified signature frame) and was envious that a friend of mine had won a Kona motocross jersey signed by Cowan, I went to bike parks and rode urban freeride stuff, I got FELT bikes' first three-piece BMX cromo crank which was also available with optional mountainbike bottom bracket bearings, Hell Track 1 and 2 blew us away and a close friend who eventually died way too early was the first german to do a barrel roll on a mountainbike. The first giros for hydraulic brake systems came out and I listened to the soundtrack of The Collective's "Roam" video all the time. Is it really 20 years? What an old man I am.. 😅

One thing I will say is that it’s always interesting to hear how few people are actually interested in riding slopestyle, because the place I live is sort of a mountain bike bubble where all my friends own slope bikes/dirt jumpers, and we all want to be able to ride those massive jumps one day. But I totally understand that slopestyle is very niche

I'm like your report and with so many different experiences by so many different riders, I would say that one avenue for the mixing of the two--BMX and mountain bikes--was the 26" BMX cruiser class and bikes. And I bought a new 26" Mongoose cruiser in March '82 at a bike shop in San Mateo, California and that bike was a blast to ride, a big BMX bike and I had officially bailed on 20" BMX bikes just a year earlier when I crashed hard on a Redline BMX bike as a young soldier in Frankfurt, West Germany. I was showing off for a bunch of kids by flying down a huge drop when, to my shock, a guy on a motocross motorcycle was coming up the face of it and I had to bail so I didn't hit him in the chest. And I was fine with leaving that sort of stunt riding, it was dangerous and I had done it for more than a decade, starting with my trusty Schwinn Sting-Ray, shown in the thumbnail in Frankfurt in early '75 when I was a 15-year-old military dependent who enjoyed showing German kids how American kids rode their bikes with jumps and wheelies. And getting back to the 26" Mongoose, O my, that bike was a whole new lease on life and it is unfortunate that BMX bikes didn't quickly evolve into 24" or something like that. The 20" wheel size was a great start, based on the Sting-Ray understandably, but those bikes were small for most riders over the age of 13--and it was only the high-rise bars and banana seat that made my Sting-Ray usable and reasonable into my early teens. Still, I would've gone for a larger bike but nothing was as tough as the Sting-Ray, no options for crazy riding like jumps and drops and staircases and anything that would make us like Evel Knievel. 😀

The accessibility of BMX allows kids to learn the skills of a slopestyle rider at a significantly smaller and safer scale. Great video. As an ex bmx rider that now rides an enduro bike and street mountain bike (with pegs) I'd say it's definitely taking riders away from bmx. The biggest thing bmx has over mtb is accessibility. The bikes are a lot cheaper and you don't need a car to find places to ride. In a side note if you're interested in watching what bmx guys can do on a mtb in a bmx video format you need to look up what the 50to01 guys are doing.

I can see bmx and slopestyle becoming something like park and powder in snow sports.

I'm 6'2 and grew up racing motocross, switched to a big bike at age 14. I have no clue how a 6'2 Man can ride a BMX bike, even 22" top tube bikes and stuff. It's just so cramped and painful to ride. So if you ask me this is just a natural progression away from overly cramped small bikes that are easy to throw around or ride vert on to something more adult sized lol. Let the hate begin.

Jimmy. Great video. Surprised you didn’t mention Fabio Wibmer. He completely changed the mountain bike game and made it flashy street style. If not for all his terrible injuries he would be a beast now

Man I'm nearly 30 and they just finally built a park with big dirt jumps near me. Smh as a kid or teenager I would've tried to go there every day. My old ass still might go up there one day when it's empty just to mess around.

There is much more to mountain biking in general than what meets the eye. Sure, BMX ties into slopestyle or 'Dirt Jumping', however slopestyle comes purely from freeride mountain biking with access to more tricks and style. As some people have transitioned from BMX, mountain biking is a whole discipline of the world of cycles alone. It ties into Endurace, Downhill, Cross country, Trail, and Slopestyle. I feel like this video influences mountain biking as an influence from complete other styles of cycling.

Brandon Semenok just dropped and mixed some sick slope style like moves in Redbull rampage. Dude did it on a bike with a single crown fork. Reminded me how Aaron gwin won Leogang 2015 downhill race without chains. 👌
