This is very dangerous! you are heat treating the soft steel. it will make them very hard and prod to breaking and shattering. I know for a license plate it is ok, but if someone saw your video and uses it on anything serious they will pay a big price.

Agreed, anything structural - you will want to avoid this process. You can always anneal the metal once treated with the oil to remove the hardness but there’s still lots of risk. It seems I didn’t convey that message very well in the video so my apologies for any confusion.

I use stainless steel theft resistant screws. Never had any issues with rust.

With the cost of a new car being at the least 20 k and usually over 30k you would think they could afford to use stainless hardware for the plates

Seriously! The rest of the hardware on vehicles are treated/stainless, why can't the visible hardware for plates be too?? lol

You can also remove rust with vinegar if you want to use safe chemicals. I ended up dipping the screws in brand new gear oil and they turned out incredibly black, which is exactly what I wanted. The original screws were just painted black but they started to rust almost immediately. Also, its not necessary for the screws to be cherry red. It just needs to be hot enough to burn the oil. I got mine to bond to the oil without ever turning red. It's probably better for the integrity of the screws, since you're not getting the metal super hot. I did basically think about "cast iron pan" seasoning, but I never considered using engine oil or gear oil. Gear oil just worked perfect. Since gear oil is also thicker than engine oil, I hope it protects the screws a little better, but only time will tell.

It will not prevent rust "forever" far from it, plus you do not heat the item anywhere near red heat

Probably ok for hard to find bolts or screws but those 4 screws probably used 10$ of propane !

I went to home depot for some stainless screws for my 603 plates. However there are some screws on inside of fender that needs this treatment. 👍

Honestly, I didn’t 😂 over time the treatment didn’t hold up. I thought it would but long term, nope.

That won’t last. A better choice would be zinc plating, then using a black oxide treatment if you want black. Only a few more steps and still completely DIY able using readily available chemicals.

Not all applications apply to this process. A trip to the store is sufficient for some while others may enjoy the do-it-yourself approach.

Yeah, that may work, but don't do it for anything where you need the strength of the bolt. Heating it to red and dropping it in a fluid changes the hardness.

I am using used engine oil but any oil will work. Even cooking oil. When it comes to this treatment, any oil will work.
