Your video popped up and I clicked on it because I just bought my first Dyson vaccum cleaner. I am 42 but I am scared too that I will not going to retire. Not just because I bought a dyson, but in general. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, you made me think of a lot of stuff about the future today. Subscribed!

I have a Dyson and a Shark. My Dyson still works well. Paid about $500 for it in 2012. The reason it still works well is because I used the heck out of the Shark, which was purchased around the same time. I work away from home and needed the Shark so I could clean where I lived for work. But even at home, the Shark was the workhorse. I purchased them both in 2012. The Shark did 95% of the cleaning. I just replaced the Shark with another Shark in March 2024. Still have the Dyson and it still works well.

Miele all the way - they do cost more, but, they do seem well worth it - our first one was going on 15+ years (until it was used to vacuum up some salt water… long story, but cats and wine were involved…) - replacement going on 10 years so far…. Costs can be managed, and, hopefully, one isn’t so close to the edge that replacement will sink you - don’t retire - the stress would be too much. Your discussion is a good topic though - we’re retired, and it is great!

We have an expense category "Household Replacement" in which I list all kinds of tools, appliances, etc , use average longevity, cost and set that amount aside monthly. Works great!

Dyson are trash but with that said. I have similar thoughts as you. My wife and I are both nurses and she is from the Philippines. We are planning on retiring there in 8 years when I’m 55 and she is 53. We are investing aggressively but I keep going back and forth so we keep our home in the states. It is valued now at 350k and will be paid off in 7 years. Do we sell and add that to our portfolio? Hard question to answer but it is nice to be in a place where that is our tough decision and not which flavor of cat food we will eat because we didn’t plan

We're retiring to Mexico in 2 years and had to buy a new big screen TV last year so unfortunately we'll have to leave that TV for the next owners of our home when we sell😢 It's a beautiful Samsung TV It's way too big to move with us

@@chrisgross2043 Funny how when you have a plan to move, every purchase becomes that much more significant.

I wonder what went wrong with your Dyson. I have used them since they first were available generally in the UK, and continue to use them here in the USA (they weren't available here when I first emigrated!) If the motor is playing up, then it really needs attention, but if other parts go wrong then those machines are really very easy to fix.... and parts are quite easily available online too. I have had to replace little bits over the years. Often there are more filters in those machines than people are aware of, and they really do need cleaning or suction goes down dramatically. Thing is... just about everything that can go wrong with Dyson's (bar the motor itself) can be remedied quite easily by most people and if parts are needed to be replaced, they are really not too expensive! Retire and then you'll have time to wade through KZbin DIY presentations that will explain how to fix most things. Haha!!! I have three Dysons (three floors here) and have only ever had to ditch one machine in the past whilst living the the USA (24 years). They really are very simple machines, but with great engineering.

Shark vacuums are much better value

The Dyson company repairs or more like rebuilds their vacuum all you need to do is pay for shipping.

We have 2 of the latest dyson animal vacuums. My life loves it - easy to use, does a better job and having 2 (one on each level) makes it easy for her to a quick vacuuming every day. Every other day when she empties them, she swears she could put together another cat. We had the previous version that broke. I consulted youtube and bought the necessary part for $30. We gave that one to our niece and she says you would have to pry it out of her cold dead hands to take it away. Dyson's prices are outrageous. I think the durability issues are due to the amount of plastics they use to keep the weight down. I'm OK with the purchase - happy wife etc.....

Dyson vacuums are a gimmick. And you don’t need a plastic vacuum that costs 800. For that kind of money you can buy a royal or other metal vacuum that will last the rest of your life.

You did what you will do in retirement, you deferred the expense rather than replace it. You will do like always and make decisions in real time based on your resources. Congrats , you move to retirement 201!!😂😂

Don't buy another Dyson. I bought their latest Gen5 detect and it only lasted a few months. Have spent around 9 months fighting to get it replaced. Their support has gone way down hill, and their products are way overpriced given their all plastic design.

We agree. I have heard nothing but negative stories about the service at Dyson.

Funny and poignant. What d you do if for example your current vehicle breaks down and you need to replace it because your still 6 months away from retirement. There will be these bumps in the road that come up. Rent for a year to make sure that you like where your living, if not your free to move somewhere else.Buying a home for us was the way to go after we had rented for a while but not for financial reasons. We felt like we needed a place to call home. -Marc

It feels like we may want a place to call home as well, even though renting is the safer bet!
