One is US encouraged NATO membership and contributed to provide military support towards it.( no so Germany and France). This frightened Putin. Second, 1994 Budapest US, UK and Russia agreed to provide security to Ukraine in return to return nukes. Russia violated and US and UK has not.

The EU barely survived Hungary and Romania's admitance and it's still reeling from the consequences of that decision and hasn't regained its lost popularity in Western Europe. I highly doubt Ukraine will be offered EU membership... at least in the next 50 years. If EU politicians are dumb or greedy enough to try I think it will be the deathblow to the EU.

@@ajmetz82 What would be good if they would be on one side militarily speaking, not opponents. I don’t know about Russia being part of the EU, I don’t see that ever happening. Russia is governed very differently they would never agree to mold themselves to fit the EU guidelines and rules. But trade agreements between the two can be and should be pursued. The most important step now is to find a way to end this war.

Ukraine is not joining EU. First of all EU has a common security defence clause like NATO. EU wouldn't want a country with security issues joining. Secondly Ukrainian economy/infrastructure is destroyed, EU wouldn't foot the rebuilding bills. They would give Ukraine some incentives like the OPEN BORDER EU STATES GRANTED TO UKRAINE IN 2014. EU would give some benefits but not membership. That's certain

Highly doubt it one of requirements in EU membership is that it should have no territorial dispute with another country. Its up to zelensky to concede territory or not for the sake of peace also ukraine will be more of a liability than an asset to EU because they will bear the burden of its debt and reconstruction. if Ukraine was allowed to develop its petroleum reserves, it would be a net payer. The whole reason for the invasion was to prevent that. Hungary has its eyes on Transcarpathia, which is also situated on sizeable gas reserves. It's no surprise that Orban wants Ukraine to fail.

Given all Ukrainian citizens have VISA free tourist visas to the EU, and given many western companies outsource labour to Ukraine, or have Ukrainian offices and staff, and given as we're discovering, Ukraine and Russia supply a helluva lot of grain, essential for food, it's all good.

Already the current member states do not fulfill them and Ukraine doesn’t qualify for any of them. Not economically not politically it’s all a big mess. Right now right now nothing is going to be certain so why this constant discussion for something that might happen in 2035? I mean I do, I see the motivation on both sides but isn’t it quite futile at this point? Too many unknowns. Maybe the whole European Union will be broken up by then or let’s face it the more probable scenario maybe there will not even be a Ukraine? Let them work on first finding a solution to the war then build the country back up and once all is straightened out then this discussion can happen in a serious manner. For now to give a definite promise would be misleading I believe.

On the long run, Russia loses anyway. As long they keep parts of ukraine occupied the sanctions will apply. Russia is increasingly isolated, with nato further expanding (Finland, sweden).

@@user-xr4bo3ln6f the EU already set the goal to reduce greenhouse gasses in 2030 by 55%. You can only decrease by burning less fuels. So it was always a matter of time, its only fast tracked even more. Again, strategically already lost this battle.

this whole situation makes my blood boil !! the EU has no intention of expanding to accommodate anyone who is of no real importance to them !! this is just a plication to calm , and buy time on Ukraine while pretending to sympathize with it's plight,... without really commiting to stop the plunder quickly and thoroughly!! !! how can Ukraine meet the joining requirements ,in it's current state and all the devious offer to join is just a time buying red herring !!!

No, kidding! It is a way of saying you lost the war and you can't join NATO; the US isnot interested anymore in you. The only door that is open for you is the EU. In other words, it means: you should negotiate with Russia so we can rescue the European economy from collapsing.
