Wave pools are bringing surfing to areas without coastlines, and delivering consistent, reproducible, killer waves. But they don’t offer the same vibe as surfing on the ocean, paddling out and waiting to catch the right wave. So are they the future, or are they actually crushing the soul of surfing? Join surfing legends Mick Fanning and Jamie O'Brien as they chat the future of wave pools and ocean surfing.

Since the 1980s, professional surfing has dabbled with artificial waves - the first pro event, the Inland Surfing Championships, was held in truly lacklustre conditions in a wave pool in Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA. And throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, various entrepreneurs and investors made noise about new 'ground-breaking' technology that ultimately amounted to yet another uninspiring artificial wave. Find out more about the history of Wave Pools here: win.gs/WavePools

i agree 100 percent, wave pools are fun, but feel more closed, and release less adrenaline than the ocean because a wipeout on the ocean is 10 times as worse as one on a wavepool

I like to think of wave pools as skateparks for surfing, you can practice tricks in a safe environment and once you have them down you take them to the streets (in surfing it would be an actual wave in the sea) and then you put the things that you learned in the skatepark (wave pool) and try to land the trick you've been practicing

Rising sea levels probably mean ocean surfing is going to stay. Wave pools are good for training and allowing people to try surfing for the first time but should not be part of the professional competition .

Pretty cool pretty interesting and a definite tool to help improve surfing but definitely surfing in the ocean it's more natural and more exciting and more fun but having a close second so that you can improve your surfing when a wave suck or just being able to work on a certain maneuver that you can't duplicate in the ocean all the time if the waves aren't calling for it is pretty awesome...

Hi @redbull i think wavepools are a great place to train and work intentionally on mastering certain maneuvers like Airs, wich in the ocean can be hard to repeat over and over again! Especially for surfers from landlocked countrys like where i am from switzerland. We dont get as much time in the ocean as other surfers so it is going to be a game changer to be able to train at home and progress faster without having to travel as much! But I think the challenge will be to adapt and adjust the maneuvers we’ll learn in the pool to all kind of waves and conditions in the ocean... Its gonna be so fun to surf more and its hopefully gonna help our surf community to grow and get more connected :) Would be interesting to hear what these 2 legends think of how we can best adjust to real waves and learn how to connect with the ocean🙌🏻

Ocean 100%. Wave pools are perfect for training, product development, & tom foolery. From a spectator perspective it's way more epic to see someone make use of a good ocean wave than a good pool wave. As a para athlete I would end up at the wave pool more because of the accessibility, but would only dream of the ocean.

If you have access to perfect uncrowded ocean waves then your lucky, most surfers have to deal with crowds, inconsistant size, onshore winds etc. Where i live its crowded and closes out most of the time whens there swell, so a wavepool would work for myself for sure, happy to pay the money the ride a fun wave.

Wave pools will do to surf training what vertical wind tunnels did to skydiving training. The biggest difference is that skydiving is just like a wind tunnel but in ocean surfing you need to be able to read the waves and adapt to different waves.

In Germany comes in a few years also a wave pool and i find it very good, because we ahd in Germany on the Balticsea only windwaves and the biggest days(3 to 6 days in the year) are only 7ft😂. On the Northsea we had on a few days good swells with barrels (but also only on very huge days 15ft). And I life on the Balticsea and I would drive every weekend in the wave park because there are better waves. Sorry for the bad English, I am only 14 years

Love your original edition.. But there is one problem i would very much like to see addressed by the Board.. Niacin is toxic in relatively low doses. As low as 300mg a day can have side effects. Niacin is in everything. If you start adding up one's daily intake; as few as 3 Red Bulls a day over time produces side effects. Personally i would remove from product eliminating all potentially toxic additives. You will get sued by some crazy bastard who drinks 10 of these a day because i assure you that is enuff to cause side effects over a period of time. The blood levels build up. Especially in inactive people. In any case thanks for listening.

Where’s the thrill of catching different sized waves like in the ocean? Not manufactured, I mean... but hanging in the ocean, getting that healing saltwater and sunshine always wondering “should I take this one” is the “fishing/hunting” aspect of the sport that a lot of people enjoy.

Depends on what type of surfing you like, but no matter what, nothing will beat the real deal- the view, the marine animals, and the unexpected things mother nature brings. Can you recreate JAWS? Or Nazare? or Mavericks? or Pipelne? Can you go wind surfing in a wave pool? Probably not. But wave pools are fun and a great way to learn or just to have fun surfing if there's no access to the ocean. They both have their pros and cons!!

Surfing is a great equaliser, doesnt matter if your a rich film star in byron youll get shouted out of the water by an old local if you step out of line - this is what makes surfing unique you have to earn you waves and your place in the line up and its policed by those who have earnt it some may hate it but its the best thing about surfing rules are made by the people and governed by the people a totally unique thing in todays world of big businesses and corporations, wave pools are for training etc but its not surfing its a whole other thing.

Wave pools are good for surfing the actual wave, but that's only like half of surfing. The other half is being in the water on a beautiful beach (in my opinion, almost all beaches are beautiful even it there's not much scenery or stuff). Especially if you can find a break where there's not many others out. Not going to happen at a wave pool.
