sur·fac·tant sərˈfaktənt/ noun a substance that tends to reduce the surface tension of a liquid in which it is dissolved. So, like a detergent? Is Seafoam also a surfactant?
@johnnieo66
@johnnieo66 7 жыл бұрын
Hi David, In researching Seafoam , it seems it is a fuel additive, which when used as the manufacturer instructs is a a solvent for sludge in fuel systems.(I've never had the need to use it, yet), WD 40 is more of a light lubricant/surfactant appropriate for household items like bicycles of garden tools you don't want to use a heavy oil to avoid attracting too much dust and debris. What do you think? I hope that helps, Peace Bro'
@heatherwise3546
@heatherwise3546 6 жыл бұрын
Im reading the comments before seeing the video. My thinking is WD can be used as starting fluid so it burns similar to gas, if you have a fuel problem like a stuck float in a carb many times you get gas in your oil. When gas in oil gets hot it turns to vapor and causes a rich running condition that will make the motor run poor and then foul the plugs. It would probably work as a lube and protect the moving parts short term but what is the point if it runs poor and cost more.

a briggs with normal oil and no cooling will eventually do one of two things, the con-rod will partially melt(and very momentarily) onto the crank shaft lock up and break the conrod, or the rings will wear heavily on the cylinder wall and cause alot of blow-by and waller out the big end of the con-rod make a terrible slap-knock sound, specially all alloy head brigs(without the sleave), if you are testing if an engine can use wd-40 as oil vs oil increasing the temp on purpose to try speed up the results is not the way to go as you get the same result with oil, maybe give it a 5 inch pulley, get a 120 amp alternator(with 5 inch pulley), and have it charge flat scrapyard car batteries for a few hours then do your usual compression test source: briggs repairs on farm and home equipment for the last 15 years including 4 broken conrods, a valve head break, alot of ignored oil changes, and 2 worn out cylinders, something as simple as straw blocking the cooling shroud on an engine with a fresh oil change can lock up the engine in a matter of a few hours under load

my mower with horrible big end connecting rod knock has had grease in the crankcase for years, this past summer was it's 4th year like that. I'd change the oil and put about 1/2 the quantity in... then pump in around 100 pumps from a grease gun. Over the course of a few hours (2 hour yard mow) the grease would melt and combine with the oil. I'd run it for a year or two and change it. The mower sucked but I didn't get a better one till recently.

Hi, Palm oil has the highest heat range, I've seen some of the locals in Malaysia using it as an engine oil for their small 4T engines (cuz it's "thicker" than the rest of kitchen oil, and way too cheap) and some of them even use it for their cars + 300ml of engine oil additives or stabilizer. (Plenty of videos on here) Actually I've applied that on my 4t scooter, I filled the crankcase up and run it for 15 minutes as a way of "engine flush". Then I added my 15w 40 Yamalub. Worked fine with me. Must be done..

The smoke probably wasn't blow by. There was to much smoke. It was the wd-40 flashing off. Just because the crankcase is colder than the flash point doesn't mean it doesn't evaporate and cause smoke. There are hotspots withing the engine, and hot spots in the oil that are constantly moving around. The same reason water starts evaporating below it's boiling temperature. Great video though!

Hell, your supposed to replace those little crush washers on spark plugs at every removal, but most never do. Though for PF I'd say let it ride. I'd reuse one for 2-4 removals assuming the gasket looked good and I was screwing around. I lie... I'd reuse it indefinitely until a problem arose more likely, not like it's my diesel or something.

He would never get any real results out of that. Check out what goes into motor oil testing and you will see what I mean. He would have to put so many hours on a lawnmower engine to get any kind of a result that you would have to check back in a few years.
@therealfranklin
@therealfranklin 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. The fill, run drain, and run to destruction videos are kind of humourous, but the results aren't really useful unless you're in the habit of letting your engine run out of oil and then trying to limp it home. On the gripping hand, you don't really need years to test an oil, just check the clearances and cylinder walls every n*100 hours of running. Though, I guess you would have to run it for hundreds of hours to get there, at which point the fuel begins to dominate the cost of testing.

i do not accept this as a good test, sorry, the compression was probably lost do to running the engine at 500F and ring tension may have been compromised. 2nd you have zero cooling wd40 isnt good over 400F and regular oil isnt good over 400F either. yes i realize the temp is cold but the offset isnt going to make that much different. IMO make an exhaust hose that bolts on to the exhaust port then run the hose outside. next heat your shop to approx 70F and at least youll have one less variable. btw the wd40 probably boiled off due to the high temps also, thats why its so low, it was using the wd40 as coolant and boiling it off.

Thanks for another interesting video! I really understand the lack of grass to cut, and it is resourceful to use the engine brake to apply load. I am not criticizing you but I have just a question. How are you being sure the flywheel is not overheated by that brake application? I always took those brakes off my mowers because I feared if that very thing happened, it could cause the flywheel to get so hot the aluminum fractured and it flew apart. It's crazy that engine lasted with such a very light oil in it; on top of the missing cooling shroud! That really surprised me honestly. I was expecting a piston seizure. As for the lost compression, I would like to see how the compression looks after the engine is run with some normal viscosity oil again. In other words, there was still "normal" oil in the rings and piston area when you did the first compression test. After the WD40 run, all that had washed out, possibly the only reason for the lower compression pressure. If you refill with normal oil, run the engine to distribute it, and then test again I bet the compression is back!

Well of course the engine ran hot and burned off most of the WD40 in the crank case. You had no cooling cowl on it! Not an accurate test of anything. Why not run it under the same conditions as you'd normally run it? I get not having a way to load test it (lack of grass) but taking away the ability for the engine to cool itself really skews the results horribly.
