Lately, on the build, it feels like we are running a race . . .
But the problem is that if feel like the finish line keeps moving.
We accomplish one task, and think, “There! Now we are closer to finishing the build.”
But then, another task pops up.
It’s frustrating, but the only thing we can keep doing is keep showing up.
The truth of it is, there is a defined finish line, and we can clearly see it, but every step seems to take a little longer than we anticipate.
This is how the whole build has been, but I think it may feel harder these days because we REALLY can see the end, and we are SO EXCITED to get there.
Follow along, as we keep showing up on the build to make progress toward completing our self built home.
*******************************************************************
And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on KZbin. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

I know the things you're working on now seem to take forever. But just look how far you've come when you look at the entire build. You should never separate a wife from her kitchen stove or her washer. 😊 Glad you were able to get yours back in place. Cute hearing Sarah singing the tunecat the end. 😊

It helps when we look back at the very beginning before we had insulation, before we had electrical or plumbing and we have accomplished so much. This WILL be the year we move in.

Every wall will be polyurethaned. We did that to our ceiling boards and some walls that are too high and awkward to get to after installation, but to get done with the shiplap install, we're saving a lot of that till the end.

Lol! We've both said a few times "we're so tired of shiplap". Getting closer to the end of it, though. I think our walls that "shrink and grow" are more of an issue of not being 100% plumb. But maybe I'll start telling myself that its just that wood expands and contracts.

Of course that change is due to humidity. If you built in Arizona or the dry parts of Mexico, you'd only have a little swelling during the short monsoon season.

When glass jars are stuck together - put them in hot water & very carefully wedge them apart - since this is iron maybe heating them up a little with a lighter (using gloves) until they come apart.... or 1 more suggestion - slim needle-nose pliers going around many times will loosen them enough - with a thin screw driver..patience will be required....good luck

We are building a house too and I totally feel what you are saying about the goal keeps moving. I estimated electric would take us a couple weeks, tops. Nope, took almost two months! @OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 5 ай бұрын
It certainly feels like we've been doing it a LONG time! In reality maybe we could have saved a couple weeks, but installing sheetrock isn't a skillset that either Sara or I had, so there would have been a steep learning curve as well. In the end we are happy with all the wood.

Why didn't you put the electric panel in the laundry room
@OneFootOfftheGrid

There wasn't enough clearance for where I wanted to put it, and the access from below would have made it challenging to run all the wires down and through that crawlspace (directly below that wall is a footer).

Scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, eggs over easy, frittatas, quiches. Baking cookies. 😂😂 we eat quite a few eggs. But when we have too many for our family then we gift some to friends. We don’t have enough chickens to consistently sell them, but it’s fun to gift farm fresh eggs to friends. And thankfully, our ducks are boys so no duck eggs!!

@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 5 ай бұрын
Well the mechanical room is just right at the back of our laundry room. So leaving insulation exposed would have looked bad. If it was its own room, we likely wouldn't have finished the walls.

Is that a combo W/D? If not... where's your dryer?
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 5 ай бұрын
I WISH it was a combo!! Our dryer will stack on top. However, it currently lives on our porch hooked up to a 5 gallon propane tank 😂😂 I haul the wet laundry through the house and out the sliding glass doors to the dryer. We need to reroute our dryer vent before we bring the dryer in and stack it.
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 5 ай бұрын
It isn't a combo. We are going with a stacking model and our dryer is out on our deck right now. We knew we weren't completely done with shiplap so we didn't have to unstack and restack them 2 times. The dryer will find it's home on top of the washer soon.
