Info from an old cowgirl. The purchase of the horses will be the cheapest part of your investment. But all the rest is so worth it. I bought my first horse in my 20s. The youngest of my 3 sons has horses, and my granddaughter from my 2nd son shows horses and does high-school rodeo. "Every horse, at one time in their life, deserves the love of a little girl." BTW, I am now 71 years old. I still ride.

I loved the back and forth between Laura and Aaron in this video. I laughed out loud several times. I am putting my money on Aaron getting a pool! They so perfectly compliment each other in their approach to their gardens and land. I could see the pool with the pool house and the line of trees flanking the path and then see a wild meadow of flowers on either side of the trees. Best of both worlds.

I agree with Aaron on the pool! Nothing better than working in the yard getting all Hot and sweaty after mowing,digging, working, horse back riding etc. and then jumping in your pool! I have had a pool for 30 years and would not want to be without it. My children and neighbor hood kids swam all the time growing up. Now my grandkids and neighborhood grandkids swim in it. Your kids would love it! It is not that much work and besides you can hire someone to take care of it! 😊

Keep in mind that automatic waterers in stalls can be a blessing and a curse. You have no way of knowing if the horse is drinking . They will also likely poop in them eventually(some horses, daily!) and if you have one that likes to soak it’s hay, you will have a nasty mess that has to be cleaned daily. And cleaning an auto waterer is much more difficult than dumping and cleaning a bucket that full of poop or has been used to dunk hay.

My teenaged son has wanted to be a paleontologist since he was 4 years old and even though I have my doubts that he can become very successful at it and I'm scared because there doesn't seem to be a lot of job opportunities I am supporting his dream 100% because when someone has that kind of lifelong passion they will be more likely to work extra hard to make their dream come true. I'm with Aaron on getting you own swimming pool. As I grow older (72) I am so thankful that when I am working in the garden, getting achy and sweating, I can just peal off the outer layer and jump into the pool before heading to the house! It has been a blessing to this old gardener and I think it will be helpful for your family and perhaps even your crew and friends as well. Also, the heater is a MUST HAVE for me. Does a wonder for the old muscles and is perfect for pool aurobics!

On the subject of bumpouts and no water. Our town has islands down main street with tons of bushes and flowers as well as bumpouts. Each small area is assigned to volunteers to weed and water and even plant what they wish. It's beautiful, it works, and there is no lack of volunteers. They are each in control of their own unique area.

Just because we let ours run the 6 1/2 acres doesn't mean that they would, she doesn't let the chickens free range. We have four ducks and with the amount of land we have it isn't a problem. They have the dirt lands and where they want horses down the road nobody said that they weren't going to be in a pen of some sort. Just wild...I don't think you could handle that. Now a pool....very neat, tidy, pretty, and decorated as it sounded like you've already imagined it. Pools are cool and not cool at the same time. I live in Florida and we have to check the water EVERY DAY. Because if the chlorine drops just a 1/2 of a ppm (I'm being dramatic) algae grows like invasive wisteria..... and sunlight eats the chlorine and it's sunny here in the warm season. In the warmest months of the year I check my pool twice a day. It was my first year having one last year so it was definitely a learning curve, and then being hit by the hurricane and being without power for a week (the pump couldn't run), after that It pretty much stayed light green for the rest of the season. I accepted defeat 😂😂😂.

Horse person there. No wild flower meadow. Just plant your pastures now to hay/pasture. You will not regret it. Barns have to be red. 🤣 The little existing barn would be a good size for miniature horses that you can train to pull a cart. Imagine driving around your property in a miniature horse cart. I have a mini horse and two full sized horses and the 26" mini horse is so fun! Minis are a really great way to teach your kids about horse handling and care. Getting two mini horses would be such a great way to start with horses. The kids would have so much fun with them.

To learn about taking care of horses, you should volunteer at an Esquine Centre once a week in the winter before you get any horses. You’ll learn a ton! You could use it in your weekly videos too if they are good with it. Also, why not switch your ideas around: horses by the red barn and pool where Laura said; outside the great room. And wildflower meadow by pool?

Dry cleaners will normally give you hangers if you just go in and ask. I don't use wire hangers either. So excited for this garden season to see what ideas Laura has. The only thing I can think of as a volunteer, Aaron, would be to present the one guy you think you have to ask about planting a tree somewhere in town, would be to give him all the facts at that time. Such as if the tree is going to have roots that up-end the sidewalk, steal the water from all the other plants around it, are deciduous, or messy, if they are stinky or attract terrible bugs, or not hardy against insects or something. That would really illuminate any reason for any meetings. Tell him you checked with the town arborist and an architect, like does it affect sunshine or wind blockage from certain important buildings -who knows?

we had the same thing with our dying tree in the 15' of the city owned area of our front yard. It took forever to get the city to acknowledge the problem, I had meetings in front of our house and was told I couldn't take it down as I would be fined - branches were falling and the trunk was open to borers and ants. I ended up getting an arborist and had their company write the city. it took 6 different contacts to even have them discuss it further. Once decided then they acted. - Now we want a tree to replace it with a tree that I would pay for - that they would ok with- nope - I have to choose their time and their vote. it could be so easy. 🤨

About automatic waters for horses. Be very careful with those as you can't tell if the horses are drinking and if they break and no one notices the horse goes without water. Not enough water leads to colic. I know the automatic waters are a problem because I worked for an equine vet and this happened enough times to know it can be a problem. Glad you are putting paddocks off the stalls. Some people don't do that and the stalls don't get used they end up putting up shelters in paddocks. Not a good use for a barn.

Your city is really missing out by not utilizing you guys and your many talents and skills! The downtown could be amazing if you guys were in charge. So sad......wish you lived in our town. A group of people got together and started a non profit called River Essence Group. The city has given them a free hand to landscape and decorate the downtown. They have done a great job.

Same in Southern Illinois. We got 4 inches of snow Friday under ice! I don’t mind, I’m not ready to start gardening yet! I am content with my grocery store flowers for the next month. Then the garden season begins for me. I enjoy the slower winter months and get projects in the house done(I’m hanging wallpaper in bathroom this week) so I can enjoy spring when it comes.

I am definitely pro-pool in the north acreage. With a pool house, a built in barbecue/outdoor kitchen and picnic tables, the basketball court, playground... party central for the kids (who in the blink of an eye will be teenagers) and all their friends and cousins can come over. 🤩

About wire hangers: Twice now I've gone to my local dry cleaner and simply asked for a wire hanger. She said the second one would need to be the last one she could give me for free, but she was very nice about it.

I only have velvet coated hangers, they are great, you should try them Laura! The dry cleaning idea is great too. I bet thrift stores or walmart/target might have them too. I have also had horses for 25 years and I suggest 1. Take lessons to get comfortable around them. 2. Join a pony club or 4H to learn horse husbandry. Having experience under your belt before you start on your own is very important. You need to be able to recognize when they are sick or injured. Because they WILL get sick or injured! Horses are shockingly fragile and disaster prone 😅. Knowing what ab- normal vital signs are is important as well. Just immerse yourself in lessons and the horse world, and when you are comfortable then get your own. As for the layout around the barn, having a sacrifice area where they have access to 24/7 is great for rainy days so you save your pasture. I would then have a few pasture fields off of the sacrifice area so you can rotate where you have the horses to rest certain pastures. Your local extension office can help with types of pasture grass to plant...you for instance dont want to plant tall fescue if you have mares that you want to breed. Lots of info to learn!

Ok.. first of all, I have to say that, Aaron, you do have a talent for property development!! And, oh. My. Gosh. What you were saying about the city not having a talent for development. I live in Portland, Oregon, and that happens here as well. I’m no genius, but I see things that just blow my mind. And I have seen exactly what you mentioned about planting trees, and then not watering them!! It’s heartbreaking to watch all those trees die. Thank you again again for such a fun recap video.
